00:00 I'm Emily Bonner.
00:04 And I'm Dominic Rayner, editor of Liverpool World.
00:07 And these are five of the biggest news stories from 2023, starting off with some court convictions
00:18 from three murders that occurred in 2022.
00:23 Dom, do you want to talk us through some of those, please?
00:27 That's right. There was a number of high profile court cases in Liverpool, but these three
00:31 particularly caught the public's attention and the wider nation's attention.
00:36 That was the conviction of Thomas Cashman for the murder of Olivia Pratt Corbell, the
00:42 nine-year-old girl who was shot at home.
00:45 Connor Chapman, who was jailed for a minimum of 48 years for the murder of Ellie Edwards,
00:52 who was shot outside a pub in Wirral on Christmas Eve.
00:57 And four men sentenced for a total of 173 years for the murder of Ashley Dale, who was
01:03 gunned down in her own home.
01:05 And you can see how deeply that affected Liverpool and the wider society by the length of the
01:10 convictions handed out by the judges.
01:12 Now, I've been on the picket line of all kinds of walkouts, especially over the past few
01:19 years.
01:20 But this year, we have seen some unprecedented strikes from NHS workers, haven't we?
01:27 Although there were strikes happening in various sectors all over, in the health service, it
01:31 really got support in Liverpool.
01:33 As you say, you were out on the picket lines talking to the nurses, the doctors, the ambulance
01:38 workers.
01:39 And every time you'd be out there, there'd be drivers coming past, beeping the horns
01:42 in support.
01:43 It is one of my favourite events of the year, the Grand National.
01:47 But it got press attention for something slightly different this year.
01:53 Well, Carix Rambler eventually won it, but the start of the race was delayed by 14 minutes
02:00 because there was huge protest by animal rights groups.
02:03 In the end, more than 100 people were arrested.
02:06 Of course, we have to mention Eurovision, the fact that Liverpool was hosting on behalf
02:13 of Ukraine.
02:14 The key thing for me was just the vibe in the city was amazing at the time.
02:18 It was just sort of, it just seemed to bring the best out of everyone.
02:22 I mean, I've never been a massive Eurovision fan, but I was fully 100% committed whilst
02:29 it was in the city.
02:30 And finally, big news for shoppers, the moving of M&S.
02:37 Yeah, this was a story that was surprisingly big for us.
02:42 M&S decided to move a couple of hundred yards down the road.
02:45 Two things that came out that they were initially unhappy with, that was one, the size of the
02:51 cafe.
02:52 The second thing was the lack of toilets in there.
02:55 Thank you so much, Don, for speaking to me about five of the biggest news stories from
03:01 2023.
