00:07 Fighters in the center of the ring getting those final instructions,
00:10 looking into each other's eyes, seeing what's about to go down.
00:13 Folks, I think we're in for a fantastic fight right here.
00:16 This is the one fight I've been looking forward to the whole night.
00:19 [crowd chanting]
00:21 It is definitely going to be fireworks.
00:23 [crowd chanting]
00:28 [bell rings]
00:29 [crowd chanting]
00:32 Off the bat, you got Southpaw versus Orthodox.
00:35 I love it. It's that rear-hand game, stepping outside the lead foot.
00:38 [crowd chanting]
00:53 Both fighters just measuring each other out right now,
00:56 trying to decide who's going to own the distance right here.
00:59 For Sonny, this is his first 8 round.
01:02 I'm sure he wants to measure, take his time.
01:06 Kind of known for being a little bit of a slow starter.
01:09 He has slow starts on his fights.
01:11 But if you crack this kid, that's the last time you crack him.
01:15 He usually starts to go to work.
01:17 But you don't want that in this game.
01:20 You don't want to have to get hit to get it together
01:23 and be able to fight the way you're supposed to fight.
01:26 George, when you go into a fight like this,
01:28 and you know it's your first 8 round fight,
01:30 is there a different pacing that's happening in your head?
01:32 Is that something you're really thinking about?
01:34 A little bit. It depends.
01:36 Once you study your opponent and you see how they come out,
01:39 if you know they come out very aggressive,
01:42 then you want to pace yourself a little bit more.
01:44 Because normally, they will slow down towards the end of the fight.
01:48 If you have an opponent who is a little bit slower starter,
01:52 then maybe you want to step on the gas
01:54 and see if you can tire him out a little earlier.
01:56 I guess it's about how much confidence you have in your own cardio training.
01:59 I'm not sure what happened right there.
02:01 It looks like he took a step and his leg gave out a little bit.
02:04 It definitely wasn't a punch.
02:06 It might have stepped on his foot as he was coming in.
02:09 They're definitely both trying to win that lead foot game.
02:12 You can see how close their feet are together.
02:14 Oh, yeah.
02:21 That's the second time Sonny's been hit pretty clean with that straight right hand.
02:26 Jose's definitely trying to establish that rear hand.
02:30 I think Sonny's just trying to feel him out with that lead hand, measure that distance.
02:34 [crowd noise]
02:38 Both fighters taking their time, looking for the shots,
02:55 seeing what shot's going to land, what's their distance.
02:59 Trying to draw out what the other guy's going to do
03:02 so they can set up their counters.
03:04 What have they done in training camp?
03:07 What's worked? What have we worked on?
03:09 Has the things we've been studying in training camp,
03:11 is that what's happening right now?
03:13 Oh, beautiful counter.
03:17 Beautiful counter.
03:19 [bell ringing]

04:05 For everybody at home watching, I don't know if you just saw,
04:10 our counterpart in the commentary booth with his fantastic tequila commercial.
04:15 We've been promised that my whiskey commercial
04:18 and Curtis's beer commercial are coming out after this.
04:22 We don't have any promises, but we're just hoping we can attain the fame.
04:26 Jorge is over here. That was awesome.
04:28 [bell ringing]
04:32 Round two coming up.
04:34 First round, very cautious from both fighters,
04:36 but they were both able to land some pretty solid rear hands.
04:41 You had Sonny with the straight left counter.
04:43 You had Angulo with a couple straight crosses.
04:45 Just like right now, he just landed another one.
04:47 I feel like Sonny started to get his timing towards the end of that round
04:51 and just sort of ran out of time,
04:53 but his countering time seems to be coming along.
04:56 It looks like he's carrying that over right now.
04:59 Angulo is throwing heat down that middle with that rear hand.
05:02 He hit him with the rear hand and the lead hand, a nice 2-3.
05:06 And that's what I mean.
05:13 He usually takes Sonny to get hit.
05:17 He's got to get mad a little bit.
05:20 You've got to get mad a little bit.
05:22 If he only had a coach that would slap him before the fight and make him mad.
05:25 Exactly, slap him up a little bit before.
05:26 It would work.
05:29 For those of you coaches out there listening, that slap is copyrighted.
05:33 I really like the little games of head movement,
05:46 what they're playing right there,
05:47 and these tiny reads that they're getting.
05:49 You can tell this is a high-level fight.
05:53 Oh, yeah.
05:54 Lucky to have it here at the Pro Wrestling Center.
05:57 Lucky to have it here at the Fight Club OC.
05:59 Short left hand.
06:03 Lead left hand drops Sonny.
06:05 It looked like he cleaned it up with the right right at the end, too.
06:08 How much can Sonny gain his bearings right now?
06:12 And is Jose going to put on the pressure?
06:14 You've just got to be careful.
06:17 A hurt fighter is a dangerous fighter.
06:19 Jose can't just come in and let his hands go because Sonny is still dangerous.
06:23 Sonny has definitely been in a situation
06:25 where he's been hurt and got the finish.
06:27 Yeah, don't change it.
06:29 What you're doing worked.
06:31 Don't change it and throw out the playbook.
06:34 Keep sticking to what's working.
06:36 And for Sonny, gain your bearings.
06:37 Keep him off a little bit.
06:39 Let him feel your power a little bit.
06:40 Gain your bearings.
06:41 Let's get your feet back under you.
06:43 Let's get back into this fight.
06:44 Oh, a nice left hook to the body.
06:52 Excellent rip to the body.
06:55 Looks like Sonny got everything back together.
06:58 He's moving better.
07:00 Throwing punches when he needs to throw the punches.
07:02 Now, is it in Jose's head?
07:06 Hey, I just stole this round.
07:07 Let me just work right now.
07:09 And, you know, who knows what it is.
07:12 I don't think that.
07:13 Doesn't seem like his style of fighting, but you never know.
07:15 Yeah.
07:22 Sonny's got to be careful at the end of the combinations
07:25 to bring that right hand back to his face
07:27 because Jose is waiting for that left hook.
07:30 I think so many people, George, you can attest to this,
07:34 so many people think boxing and fighting in general,
07:36 combat sports, is about throwing punches.
07:38 It's so much about defense.
07:41 One of the first things I teach my fighters is defense.
07:44 Absolutely.
07:45 You know?
07:46 Absolutely.
07:48 Anyone can put on gloves and just throw punches.
07:50 Exactly.
07:51 You know?
07:52 But can you defend?
07:53 Can you counter?
07:54 Can you use your footwork?
07:55 Can you use your head movement?
07:56 There's so much.
07:57 Can you set traps?
07:58 Can you read the patterns?
07:59 Yep.
08:00 There's so much that goes behind boxing.
08:02 And it's very, very small, you know?
08:04 Very--it comes down to millimeters, you know?
08:07 Super, super small.
08:09 Some of the greatest fighters in the world
08:13 are very, very defensive-minded.
08:15 Absolutely.
08:16 George, if you're in Sonny's corner,
08:18 what are you telling him right now?
08:20 If I'm in Sonny's corner--
08:22 well, the main thing is keep that right hand back.
08:25 Keep that right hand close to your head, right?
08:28 You don't want to drop it,
08:29 especially after the combination.
08:31 Another thing would be start attacking the body a little bit
08:35 to get the attention downstairs, right?
08:37 Right.
08:38 Attack the body,
08:39 but also throw that right hook over the top
08:42 because Jose, if you pay attention,
08:45 towards the later end of the round,
08:46 he starts dropping that lead hand.
08:49 Gotcha.
08:50 Right, he starts dropping that lead hand,
08:51 leaving that self open.
08:54 Yeah, that lead hand is really fast.
08:56 And you can tell he just has confidence,
08:58 a different swagger about what he can do with his lead hand.
09:01 Now.
09:02 Yeah.
09:03 Right.
09:04 [indistinct chatter]
09:32 I like to see Sonny throw multiple jabs, you know,
09:35 because he throws one jab
09:36 and Jose's really good with his lateral movement.
09:38 He has good footwork.
09:39 He takes a small step back,
09:41 but if Sonny were to double it up
09:42 and follow with that left hand,
09:44 I think it would work really well.
09:46 And you also want to see how's he reacting to that double jab.
09:49 Exactly.
09:50 Right, is his reaction to the second jab
09:52 going to be the same as the first?
09:53 Does he keep laterally sliding or does--
09:55 you know, what's your read off of that?
09:57 Exactly.
09:58 I guess this is what you're looking for, right?
10:00 A nice double hook to both sides of the body.
10:03 He threw that jab hook with that lead hand
10:06 and it felt like it had a little bit of connection there.
10:08 Yeah, I'm really impressed with Jose's head movement.
10:18 He looks--just the way he's moving his head,
10:20 I like how he's trusting that right hand.
10:23 He sort of knows what's going to land,
10:25 but he's not being overzealous with it
10:27 just because he got the knockdown in round two.
10:29 Exactly.
10:30 And that's the experience.
10:35 You know, he may not have the nicest record, right?
10:38 But 24 fights is 24 fights.
10:41 Exactly.
10:43 In the pros.
10:44 Who knows what he had in the amateurs?
10:46 As much research as I could do,
10:48 I couldn't find his amateur record,
10:49 but I'm assuming it's probably quite lengthy,
10:51 especially with the way he's conducting himself in the ring right now.
10:55 [crowd cheering]
10:57 You see, Sonny's being a little bit more active,
11:12 I feel, this round than Jose.
11:14 The only thing is that Jose's the one moving forward
11:16 and Sonny's moving back or laterally.
11:19 So, let's see how the judges score this fight.
11:21 Do they like the volume that Sonny's giving?
11:23 Do they like the volume that Sonny's throwing?
11:25 Or do they like the pressure that Jose's coming with?
11:28 I feel like I just saw something.
11:30 You said you want to see that right hook come up with Sonny
11:32 after that left hand.
11:34 [crowd cheering]
11:36 It takes a team to achieve greatness.
11:45 Whether it's fighting for a world title
11:47 or grinding in the gym to be above the rest,
11:49 you are cut from a different cloth.
11:51 So be the best you can be and look good doing it.
11:54 Let's get it.
12:19 [whistle blows]
12:21 Here we go, start of the fourth round.
12:32 Both these guys seem in tremendous shape.
12:38 I'm not seeing any signs of fatigue,
12:40 any signs of slowing down.
12:42 Oh yeah, both fighters are very well conditioned.
12:47 And you can tell, both fighters,
12:49 they're not throwing crazy amount of punches.
12:52 They're putting some nice pop, good counters,
12:54 but they're not going a lot every single round.
12:57 They know they have eight full rounds to work.
12:59 And there's not a lot of wasted movement.
13:02 I love when I see that, especially in boxing.
13:04 Boxing was my first love, and when I see fighters,
13:07 no wasted movement.
13:08 Every movement has a purpose,
13:10 every punch has a purpose and a target.
13:12 It's what really makes this sport exciting for me.
13:15 Yeah, exactly.
13:16 And all those small movements that Jose is doing,
13:40 he's pawing that left hand, he's bringing it around.
13:43 Those small little movements can be deceiving.
13:47 It can create some sort of illusion
13:52 that either he's far away or he's leaving himself open
13:56 and may allow Sonny to throw something
13:59 and Jose can use that to his advantage.
14:01 In all reality, he's freezing him.
14:03 Those movements are freezing him.
14:05 And those tiny little feints,
14:07 those tiny little hand movements can be very distracting
14:09 when you're actually working your foot in
14:11 to getting into range.
14:12 Yeah, absolutely.
14:13 It's just the way Jose moves, he's so balanced.
14:19 When he steps back, he's in position to strike.
14:22 When he moves forward, he's in position to strike.
14:24 His defensive guard looks really good,
14:26 that high, tight guard, he looks strong in it.
14:29 Yeah.
14:30 But I feel like Sonny's a little bit more active this round.
14:36 Yeah.
14:39 He's throwing, now he's going a little bit more to the body.
14:43 He threw a couple of hooks to the body early on.
14:45 I don't like him reaching like that and stepping like that.
14:50 I feel like Jose's got a pretty fast counter right hand.
14:54 Exactly.
14:55 And it looks like that's what Sonny's kind of loading up a little bit.
14:59 Loading up.
15:00 Doesn't it feel like Jose's almost drawing him into that?
15:03 Like this is the first time we've seen him taking that backwards reach.
15:06 Exactly. Yeah.
15:07 [crowd noise]
15:12 It's like he's kind of inviting Sonny to chase him down a little bit.
15:15 Step in.
15:16 Yeah.
15:17 But Sonny's being really good about not throwing too many punches
15:24 and leaving himself open when he does do that.
15:26 Every now and again he's overreached maybe a tiny bit,
15:29 but nothing that's going to get him in a lot of trouble.
15:31 It looks like Jose kind of took that round off.
15:33 He didn't throw too many punches, a lot of movement.
15:36 Yeah.
15:37 He was not coming forward.
15:38 He was backpedaling a lot, maybe reserving a little bit of energy
15:44 because he knows he's still got multiple rounds left.
15:47 And I mean he may be up in the scorecards because of that knockdown.
15:51 Right.
15:52 I think there's really only one defining round,
15:57 and that being the round with the knockdown.
15:59 I think the other one's--
16:00 Could have been either way.
16:02 It depends on who's judging.
16:04 It depends on the judges.
16:05 What are they looking at?
16:06 What do they see?
16:07 Do they like the forward compression?
16:09 Do they like going back and countering and making a pass?
16:12 Do the body shots add up?
16:14 I guess that can be one of the frustrating parts about fighting
16:19 is you don't know what the criteria is.
16:21 Exactly.
16:22 Yeah.
16:23 I mean we know what the criteria is.
16:25 Finish.
16:26 We know the criteria is, but are the judges seeing it?
16:28 Do they know it?
16:29 Yeah.
16:30 Yeah.
16:32 [crowd chanting]
16:35 Now we start going downhill in the rounds.
16:37 We're in round five.
16:39 Yeah, the balance.
16:48 I'm so impressed with the balance of Jose.
16:50 Whether he's punching, whether he's getting punched,
16:57 whether he's moving forward or backwards,
17:00 the balance is just very nice.
17:02 It is.
17:03 I'm curious, George, to see if maybe you were actually dead on
17:06 what you were saying about Jose.
17:08 Like maybe his corner said, "Hey, slow it down this round."
17:11 Let's see what he does coming forward.
17:13 Maybe you can catch him coming in.
17:15 And then we'll step back on that gas in round five.
17:17 Yeah, exactly what he's doing right now.
17:19 He looks like he's coming forward, and he looks very calm.
17:22 Yeah, and now Sonny's throwing more punches,
17:26 and now he's just starting to get calm.
17:29 And almost probably could be potentially confusing
17:32 to a fighter like Sonny.
17:34 He's like, "Okay, now I'm going forward.
17:36 Now I'm controlling the pace."
17:38 And then next round, "Oh, no, I'm going back again."
17:40 You know, it's like that mixture of styles.
17:42 You can't get into a rhythm.
17:44 As we know, fighting is rhythm.
17:46 Exactly.
17:47 It's about rhythm and breaking rhythm.
17:51 Exactly.
17:52 Nice, short right hand landed by him.
17:56 Another right hand. Uh-oh.
17:58 Sonny's in wobbly legs right now.
18:01 I think that shot hurt him.
18:02 I see a little bit of wobbliness in his legs, right, George?
18:06 And I think those shots are just building
18:10 Jose's confidence even more and more.
18:12 You see, you look at the defense of Jose.
18:23 If his hands are up, he has a really tight guard.
18:26 And it's strong.
18:28 Exactly. He's very solid.
18:30 And on top of that, he's doing those slight movements
18:33 in his upper body.
18:34 He's using his footwork as well to step back.
18:37 There's a lot of layers that you have to break through
18:40 in order to defeat this guy.
18:42 And he's connecting.
18:43 And when he's connecting, it looks like he's connecting.
18:46 Exactly.
18:47 But with his strong guard,
18:48 even though I really believe Sonny has landed those body shots,
18:51 those good shots against the guard,
18:53 it just doesn't look as good.
18:55 And again, I know we keep harping on this,
19:00 but what it looks like to the three people
19:03 sitting outside that ring that never took a shot
19:06 means something.
19:07 It's different to guys like us who have taken shots
19:09 and we know, like, "No, I rolled that."
19:11 Yeah, he is fast.
19:17 Jose is really fast, but he needs to get it together.
19:21 He can't get overconfident there.
19:23 He did, and then Sonny capitalized,
19:25 landed a three-punch combination.
19:27 George, I'm glad you said that.
19:28 I was just about to say the same thing.
19:30 He cannot get overconfident at this point in this fight.

23:43 Maybe some frustration is starting to set in
23:45 with the end of that round.
23:46 And we got two more rounds to go.
23:49 Definitely these aren't what you would
23:51 necessarily call championship rounds,
23:53 but for these guys, they are.
23:54 Right, absolutely.
23:55 And this is a--
23:56 Sonny has never been to round seven.
23:58 He's never been to round eight.
24:00 So let's see--this is his first eight-round fight.
24:04 So let's see how he does.
24:05 Oh, beautiful combination.
24:06 Beautiful four-punch combination right there.
24:09 And every one landed.
24:10 Yeah, all of them.
24:11 [crowd noise]
24:26 There's that combination again.
24:28 Just awesome targeting.
24:31 [crowd noise]
24:39 Let's see if--
24:42 if Angulo decides to stay out there on the outside
24:45 and let Sonny start to work with those straight punches again,
24:48 or if he's going to be aggressive,
24:50 get on the inside and, you know,
24:52 look for those counters, create those counters.
24:55 [crowd noise]
25:16 Nice.
25:18 I feel like Sonny has a little bit more of an intent this round.
25:22 It seems like I got a purpose.
25:24 I'm going to go out.
25:25 I need to go out, and I need to put it on this guy a little bit.
25:28 But look, Jose starts walking forward again.
25:30 [crowd noise]
25:33 But he's just walking forward.
25:35 He's not doing anything with that--
25:37 while he's taking away that forward movement.
25:40 He's just kind of walking him down.
25:42 As you get more fatigued,
25:43 those straight punches start slipping through that guard, don't they?
25:46 Yep.
25:49 And you're right, Curtis.
25:50 Jose seems like he's just kind of walking forward,
25:53 throwing as many punches as he was earlier.
25:55 And now Sonny is capitalizing, just throwing those straight shots,
26:00 moving laterally, moving to his right,
26:02 trying to be on the outside,
26:04 trying to put his foot on the outside of Jose's foot.
26:07 [crowd noise]
26:13 The only thing that Sonny's got to be careful is--
26:15 Oh, that snuck in there.
26:18 We call that the Bruce punch.
26:19 Knuckles up, Bruce Lee punch.
26:22 [crowd noise]
26:37 Good little sneaky jab there by Jose.
26:44 Yeah, Sonny's moving a lot to his right,
26:46 which is good that you want to get away--
26:48 Beautiful right hook, George.
26:59 And that can be a pattern you're setting up.
27:01 If the fighter I'm fighting is constantly circling to my left,
27:04 circling to my left, circling to my left, I'm setting it up.
27:09 The only thing Sonny's got to be careful of is that left hook by Jose.
27:17 It looks like Jose hasn't really thrown that left hook with intent
27:19 like he did since he dropped him with it.
27:21 Exactly.
27:22 I feel like he's having trouble because Sonny's doing a really good job
27:26 of keeping his foot outside, so it's making a weird angle
27:29 for him to throw that left hook.
27:30 I feel like it's going to be too extended outside.
27:34 That's a good point.
27:35 It's not in that sweet spot of where you want to be right in front of him
27:38 so that you can punch through the target.
28:01 [inaudible]
28:25 Eighth and final round coming up, guys.
28:27 I'll tell you what I really want to see right now is a super hard leg kick.
28:31 Just one super hard leg kick.
28:34 Make some noise in here.
28:36 This is the eighth and final round.
28:48 Now that I see the thighs of Angulo.
28:52 He's a big kid.
28:54 He definitely hasn't skipped the weight room on leg day.
28:57 Not at all.
28:59 Nice straight right hand.
29:03 That punch has been pretty money for him all night.
29:09 I think in order for him to take this fight,
29:11 he's going to have to throw that a little bit more.
29:13 He's going to have to have a little bit more confidence with that
29:15 and that left hook as well.
29:23 Boy.
29:24 Just off.
29:25 Just outside.
29:26 Just off.
29:31 Both fighters looking to just counter each other.
29:33 That's what they're looking.
29:35 And who's going to draw it out first.
29:39 This is where you've got to throw multiple feints.
29:40 Feint, feint, feint.
29:41 Make a bite.
29:42 Feint not only with your head but with your shoulders, your hands.
29:46 Sorry, not only with your hands but with your head and your shoulders,
29:49 your level changing, your feet.
29:54 Sonny wants a war.
29:56 He's trying to drive in.
29:57 Right?
30:04 I like asking you shall receive here.
30:19 I like that Sonny spending time in the middle of this ring right now.
30:29 A little bit of gamesmanship.
30:38 Fast.
30:42 Obviously the ref doesn't like Sonny's shoes.
30:45 It's too late in the fight to talk about that ref.
30:47 Get out of the way.
30:51 Nice straight left with the right hook.
30:59 Nice.
31:01 A little gamesmanship back.
31:07 Boy, that was a good left hook.
31:22 Both fighters just trying to bait each other in.
31:30 Sonny wants a war.
31:33 And that might just have won him that round.
31:36 That very much won him that round.
31:38 But how did the other seven go?
31:40 We know how round two went, but it's the other ones.
31:43 It's the pressure over the countering.
31:46 It's the straight punches versus the counter right hand.
31:52 A lot of factors.
31:54 If I'm being honest, I think on my scorecards, I think Jose edged that out.
31:59 But Sonny fought his butt off too.
32:02 And he did some fantastic things.
32:04 I'm just not sure he did enough of it often enough.
32:08 Overall, amazing technical fight.
32:11 Absolutely.
32:15 And I think it's going to come down to the perception of who put the most pressure on him.
32:20 Absolutely.
32:21 You know.

33:43 No, I don't.
33:44 Unless you just get a little, get a break on sugar.
33:48 Yeah.
33:49 - How about it, one more time.
33:56 - For eight pounds of hot ass cake.
33:59 Give it up for both of these guys.
34:04 - Fantastic fight.
34:05 - You're right Mike, you're right.
34:09 - We go to the scorecards for our decision.
34:13 Judge Donald Howard, Judge Michael Bell,
34:15 each scored the fight 78-73.
34:18 Judge Ray Corona speeds it a bit closer at 77-74.
34:22 All for the winner by unanimous decision,
34:26 and still undefeated, Sonny "The Bear" Robledo.
34:30 - Great fight by both combatants.
34:38 I'll tell you what, Jose Angulo definitely
34:41 stepped up for his name.
