00:00 The festive season is underway in the Western nations, notably in the United States of America.
00:08 It's a period for families to reunite and cherish the moments together on the eve of
00:13 Christmas.
00:14 Nonetheless, the atmosphere around the White House, however, starts contrastly, with renewed
00:20 attention drawn to the heated situation at the US-Mexico border.
00:24 A significant number of people have once again started to arrive at the US-Mexico border
00:28 seeking asylum and better opportunities.
00:31 These individuals are making their ways across the Rio Bravo River, aiming to surrender to
00:36 the US patrol agents for asylum.
00:38 The recent influx, predominantly composed of individuals from Venezuela and Honduras,
00:43 marks a notable surge of over 600 people on Saturday at Eagle Pass near Texas.
00:48 This has added to a constant flow that has seen over 10,000 arrivals in recent days,
00:53 leading to an increased activity at the Temporary Processing Center.
00:56 The migrants began their crossing before the daybreak, congregating on the Mexican side
01:01 of the Rio Grande.
01:02 Using their cell phones as lights, they waded through the shallow waters and, upon reaching
01:06 the US side, navigated through makeshift paths along the riverbank, using blankets and coats
01:11 to cover the wire barrier.
01:14 State and federal agencies were also present at the border to receive and guide them to
01:18 designated areas for processing.
01:20 Among the migrants, there was also a young girl who was adorned in a Santa hat with a
01:25 ripped-stripped dress, part of the family group of seven, following their way into the
01:29 river crossing, whereas some individuals changed into dry clothes, leaving their wet garments
01:34 behind.
01:35 This notable increase appears to be linked to the many asylum seekers attempting entry
01:39 before the possible enforcement of a new Texas law that might criminalize such entries.
01:45 For the unaware, in November, authorities encountered 242,000 illegal immigrants at
01:51 the border, setting a new record for the month.
01:55 The year followed an unprecedented fiscal year 2023, where nearly 2.5 million individuals
02:00 were caught crossing the border illegally alongside an estimated 670,000 individuals
02:06 successfully evaded their capture.
02:09 This notable increase in migrant arrival continues to pose a multifaceted challenge at the US-Mexico
02:14 border, drawing political scrutiny and raising concerns about the law and security preparations
02:19 in the area.
02:20 Also, it is surely going to become a major political issue ahead of the 2024 elections,
02:26 as GOP alleges Biden's desperate attempt to intake as much migrants as possible.
