00:00 According to local government officials on Monday, armed groups have carried out a string
00:09 of attacks on villages in central Nigeria, killing at least 160 people.
00:14 In a region that religious and ethnic tensions have ravaged for several years, this toll
00:18 represents a significant increase from the initial figure announced by the army on Sunday
00:23 evening, which was just 16 dead.
00:26 At least 113 individuals have been officially confirmed dead as fighting continues on Saturday
00:31 into the early hours of Monday, the local administration has confirmed.
00:35 According to the administration, the military gangs, also known as the bandits, have set
00:40 fire to homes and have carried out well-coordinated attacks in more than 20 different communities.
00:46 As a result, more than 300 wounded people were found during the rescue operation.
00:50 They were immediately taken to medical facilities in Birkinladi, Joos and Bogos.
00:55 According to the preliminary count by the Red Cross Society, there were reportedly 104
01:00 fatalities in 18 villages within the Boko area.
01:03 However, as per a parliamentarian named Dixon Column, at least 50 people were reported dead
01:08 in a number of the Birkinladi area villages.
01:11 Now following the attacks, Amnesty International has also criticized the government.
01:15 Writing on ex-formerly Twitter, the Amnesty International has stated that the Nigerian
01:20 authorities have been largely failing to end frequent deadly attacks on rural communities
01:25 of the plateau state.
01:27 Banded militias that operate from bases deep in forests and raid villages just to loot
01:31 and kidnap residents for ransom have long terrorized the northwest and central Nigeria.
01:36 Intensified by the recent climate pressures and rapid population growth, the competition
01:41 for the natural resources between farmers and nomadic herders has also sparked violence
01:45 and exacerbated the already tense social tensions.
01:49 Since 2009, a jihadist conflict between rival groups affiliated to the Islamic State group
01:54 and Boko Haram has raged in northern Nigeria, which has also resulted in the death of thousands
01:59 of people and the displacement of approximately 2 million people.
02:04 In an effort to address the continent's ongoing security issues, President Ahmed Bola Tenobu,
02:09 a former governor of Lagos, who was elected in February after a fiercely contested election,
02:14 had pledged to bring in more investment to the continent's most populous and prosperous
02:19 economy.
02:20 However, with the recent rise of the banded activity, it is becoming difficult for Nigeria
02:24 to create new economic opportunities.
