00:00 I think everybody loves the song and it's a great song.
00:03 And originally it was denied being Christmas number one
00:05 because of Band-Aid.
00:06 I mean, wham, Christmas number one after 39 years.
00:10 What do you think made it go to number one?
00:12 What was the push for that, do you think, this year?
00:14 I don't think there was a push.
00:15 I think everybody loves the song and it's a great song.
00:19 And originally it was denied being Christmas number one
00:21 because of Band-Aid.
00:22 Yes.
00:23 And eventually it happened.
00:24 Which really hacked George Michael off.
00:26 He was really-- he tried to put a smile on it,
00:28 but he was really--
00:28 Oh, that's really funny.
00:29 So the thing is, when-- so the '80s, for a period of time,
00:33 it was all-- you look back and you thought,
00:35 oh, look at those leg warmers.
00:36 It was all a bit naff.
00:36 What on earth were we all thinking?
00:38 So when I left Radio 1 end of '93,
00:41 the '80s was starting to become a bit naff and very cheesy.
00:46 And then I sort of went away 25 years, I came back,
00:48 and all of a sudden the '80s was super cool again.
00:51 And I go, OK.
00:53 It's timeless music.
00:54 I mean, so many icons who started out in the '80s,
00:57 whether it's Madonna, whether it's Whitney, Queen, Wham.
01:02 I mean, the list is endless.
