00:07 But what do the critics say was the best movie of the year?
00:10 We're breaking down the critics' top five films of 2023,
00:13 according to THR's chief film critic David Rooney.
00:16 Coming in at number five is Fallen Leaves from Finnish director Aki Karismäki.
00:21 Rooney said of the movie, quote,
00:22 "This deceptively modest film is both dure and droll,
00:25 every frame finding beauty in a dingy milieu that seems frozen in time."
00:29 [singing]
00:34 Number four is Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon,
00:37 whose cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, and Robert De Niro.
00:42 Rooney called the film, quote,
00:43 "a late masterwork from a revered filmmaker still boldly expanding his legacy at 81."
00:48 They told me you was going with Matt Williams for a time.
00:53 You talk too much.

01:05 Rooney said of the cast, quote,
01:06 "There was no tighter ensemble this year."
01:09 Do I scare you?
01:10 No.
01:15 Number two is Poor Things, starring Emma Stone.
01:18 Rooney said of filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, quote,
01:21 "Nothing in his unique filmography can compare with the fantastical flights
01:24 of this inspired riff on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein."
01:27 He also called Stone's performance never better
01:30 and praised the film's supporting cast, which includes Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe.
01:34 You're always reading now, Bella.
01:37 You're losing some of your adorable way of speaking.

01:57 According to Rooney, quote,
01:58 "This is an exquisite film as even-handed as it is insightful,
02:01 digging deep on relationships, fate, roads not taken, and the phantoms of parallel existences."
02:07 Are you attracted to him?
02:09 I don't think so.
