00:00 Percy Jackson
00:02 We've been expecting you
00:05 What was the most important thing for you to to get right about this adaptation?
00:09 It is a franchise a series a story that really lives in its tone and its sense of humor in its
00:16 sentimentality and I think finding a way to
00:18 be able to capture that tone and
00:20 be able to move the story around when we needed to to get it to fit a new medium was a
00:25 conversation with Rick and Becky and and making sure that there was no part of that translation that was going to
00:31 Sound false notes for them or make it feel like this wasn't the story that they brought to the table
00:37 It needed to have its heart and soul in the right place. So making sure that was an order was really important
00:42 Percy the stories I have told you about great gods and monsters
00:49 They are real. It's such a timeless story a story about not fitting and about how difficult it is to
00:55 Watch someone you love not fit in addition to being that person is the most universal
01:00 Experience talking to Walker and everyone seems to say this is like he is Percy Jackson
01:06 What did you see in him when you first met with him or saw his audition?
01:10 What was that process like?
01:11 We first saw him and I give I give John a lot of credit because he was he was the one who first saw his
01:16 Tape and said look at this kid. There was a rawness
01:19 There was an honesty that we didn't find anywhere else like there was just something so specific about him that you just believed every word
01:26 He said and as we got to know him more as we got to know his parents as we got to know
01:31 Where he comes from and how much he connected to these books
01:33 I mean he had read them six times since third grade and he was just so connected to this and actually we even heard that he
01:40 Had mentioned like way early that this was his dream role when he was a kid
01:44 So there was a film adaptation that got a lot of criticism from fans of the books going into this
01:50 What were some key points that you wanted to follow to make sure that didn't happen again?
01:54 The biggest choice that was made early on
01:57 That I think was just a different choice than the movies made was to cast the kids as kids
02:01 To really embrace the fact that this is a story about three people who are still children
02:07 And who are just kind of moving into that phase in their life when they are
02:13 Emerging from that filter I guess where you know that you live in as in childhood
02:17 It comes with a whole raft of complications when you make that choice, but it was important once you're on that path
02:23 I think a lot of other things all start to come into focus in terms of what kind of story you're telling and who it's
02:27 For what's the plan because there are quite a few books. What is the overall plan? What is the dream here?
02:32 We talked about it. You know it was the goal has always been sort of a book a season going forward
02:38 We're in this moment right now putting this out there for us with the Riordan's has been a four-year process
02:43 To get this here through kovat and everything else that's taken place over these last four years
02:48 But it's pretty exciting just to launch this and see how people respond to it
02:53 And and the hope is to make many more of these I love like you know conventions
02:58 I feel like is where you can really get a sense of what the fandom is and I think it was d23
03:02 That was the first moment. Yeah, how cool is it to just see how many fans are so devoted to this?
03:07 It's the connection people have to this story is unlike anything else. I've ever seen it's one thing to be a fan of a story
03:14 It's another thing to feel like that story is a part of who you are
03:18 And a part of why you started reading and a part of coming to terms with the things that make you different than the other
03:23 Kids around you I think that creates a really strong bond
03:26 And you see it the moment you see these crowds of people who are just dying to have this become real in a new way
03:32 It's it's big deal. Maybe I won't even need sword
03:35 I'm gonna need a sword
