00:00:30 Hey, mom, I think I got the lights right.
00:00:45 You ready?
00:00:48 That's perfect, honey.
00:00:50 Just perfect, thank you.
00:00:52 I'm so glad you came over to help us decorate.
00:00:55 Of course, I wouldn't miss it.
00:00:57 You know, the trick, as dad taught me, is to start near the bottom at the trunk.
00:01:01 And to make sure they're plugged in and lit before you begin.
00:01:04 Right, so you can see what the lit tree's gonna look like as you string.
00:01:07 Yes, you too, and you're tinkering.
00:01:09 Well, it's all in the details, mom.
00:01:11 Right, dad?
00:01:13 That's right, doctor.
00:01:14 Dad.
00:01:15 What?
00:01:16 I like calling you doctor, I'm proud of you.
00:01:18 I finished med school a long time ago.
00:01:20 Mm-hm, still proud of you.
00:01:21 You know, he's never gonna change, Nicole.
00:01:23 This man is stubborn.
00:01:25 Says the woman who we barely see anymore because of all of her volunteer work,
00:01:29 despite me asking her to slow down.
00:01:31 Well, I happen to enjoy staying busy.
00:01:33 And that reminds me, I will be at the hospital tomorrow for my shift.
00:01:36 I know, mom.
00:01:37 You're already our most faithful candy striper.
00:01:39 Hm.
00:01:40 You might wanna get that flower out of your hair before you go.
00:01:44 Well, no flower never hurt anyone.
00:01:46 Oh, Fran, does that mean that you made--
00:01:48 Yes, dear.
00:01:49 I made the peppermint biscotti.
00:01:52 They are my favorite.
00:01:53 We know.
00:01:55 OK, so I'm a creature of habit.
00:01:56 I like order.
00:01:58 And now that the lights are done, it is time for the first ornament.
00:02:02 OK.
00:02:06 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:02:10 I know it's hard, first Christmas without grandma.
00:02:22 This was her favorite time of year, even with--
00:02:25 would you please hang that on the tree for me?
00:02:31 Of course.
00:02:32 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:02:36 [CHIMES]
00:02:38 Oh, I just wish she'd had more Christmases with him.
00:02:47 He was a hero.
00:02:49 That he was.
00:02:50 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:02:58 [CAR ENGINE]
00:03:02 [GASPS]
00:03:13 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:03:16 Good morning.
00:03:18 Good morning.
00:03:20 You're out of uniform, doctor.
00:03:21 Oh, I couldn't find mine this morning
00:03:23 when I was rushing out the door.
00:03:24 Fortunately for you, I always keep extras handy.
00:03:27 What would I do without you, Marilyn?
00:03:29 You'd be seeing your first patient
00:03:30 without looking as adorable as you do in that hat.
00:03:33 And Nicole, he's really cute.
00:03:36 You have to stop trying to set me up.
00:03:39 Besides, it would be unethical for me to date a patient.
00:03:41 I think there's a cuteness exception to that rule.
00:03:43 Anyway, I doubt he's going to be a patient for very long.
00:03:46 Just a minor knee injury.
00:03:48 He's in room four.
00:03:49 Good morning, Major Ross.
00:03:56 I'm Dr.-- I'm Dr.--
00:04:02 Ramsey, I think.
00:04:03 That's what's on your coat there.
00:04:04 I'm not sure.
00:04:05 Yeah, sorry.
00:04:08 I was just immersed in your chart.
00:04:10 Oh, yeah. Is it great?
00:04:11 It's probably great, right?
00:04:12 I haven't seen it yet.
00:04:13 Yeah, yeah.
00:04:15 I mean, no.
00:04:17 No, it's not.
00:04:20 Anyway, you're here because you injured your right knee?
00:04:23 Yeah, playing basketball in the base rec league.
00:04:27 But it's fine.
00:04:28 It's fine.
00:04:29 The fellows all made me come here.
00:04:30 How long have you been working here?
00:04:32 Because I don't think I've--
00:04:34 A little while.
00:04:35 I'm in the reserves.
00:04:36 Oh, reserves, right.
00:04:37 Great way to pay off those med school loans, huh?
00:04:40 Well, it's a little more than that.
00:04:43 So how did you injure it?
00:04:45 I didn't.
00:04:46 It's fine.
00:04:46 Like I said, the fellows made me come here.
00:04:49 Well, if you had injured it, how might it have occurred?
00:04:52 Right.
00:04:53 OK, it might have occurred when I pivoted a little too
00:04:55 quickly, took a pass, and then went to shoot.
00:04:56 But I didn't.
00:04:58 It's fine.
00:04:59 It doesn't even hurt.
00:05:00 Why don't I determine that?
00:05:02 I mean, since you're here at all.
00:05:03 OK, yeah.
00:05:04 I mean, of course.
00:05:05 I love your Santa hat, by the way.
00:05:09 Thank you.
00:05:10 Are you married?
00:05:13 No.
00:05:14 I mean, no.
00:05:14 You can't ask me that.
00:05:16 Why not?
00:05:17 Yeah, I just did.
00:05:18 It might be a little too forward,
00:05:19 maybe slightly aggressive.
00:05:21 But I don't think it's illegal, is it?
00:05:23 I hope not.
00:05:24 How has it felt since you injured it?
00:05:27 You know, a little lonely.
00:05:28 But it's Christmas time.
00:05:29 Trying to keep my spirits up.
00:05:30 It's-- oh, my knee.
00:05:33 Sorry.
00:05:34 I do have a little bit of pain on the inside of my leg.
00:05:36 But no, I haven't injured it before,
00:05:38 if that's what you're going to ask.
00:05:39 Well, there is some laxity.
00:05:41 And I do feel some swelling.
00:05:42 I don't think you've fully torn your ACL.
00:05:44 But I still like to do an MRI just to make sure.
00:05:48 I can schedule that for you.
00:05:50 OK.
00:05:51 You know what?
00:05:52 Sure, on one condition.
00:05:56 What do you mean, condition?
00:05:57 I agree to do an MRI on my knee, even though my knee is probably
00:06:00 fine, if you agree to have coffee with me this afternoon.
00:06:04 Oh, I am not accustomed to medical treatment
00:06:06 blackmail, Major Ross.
00:06:08 But call me Daniel, please.
00:06:09 And come on, please.
00:06:11 Yeah, OK, why not?
00:06:16 OK.
00:06:16 But only as your doctor.
00:06:18 And potential friend, because anything else
00:06:20 would be unethical.
00:06:21 Yeah, of course.
00:06:22 I mean, I wouldn't want you brought up
00:06:23 on charges for having coffee.
00:06:24 My conscience couldn't handle it.
00:06:26 And plus, once I've flirted my way past friendship,
00:06:28 I'll no longer be your patient anymore,
00:06:29 because my MRI is going to show that my knee is fine.
00:06:32 Thank you very much.
00:06:32 So--
00:06:33 Yeah, we'll see about that.
00:06:35 You can get dressed now, Major.
00:06:37 OK.
00:06:38 Oh, hey, what about hot cocoa?
00:06:40 I mean, more Christmasy, right?
00:06:42 You like hot cocoa?
00:06:44 Yeah, hot cocoa it is, Daniel.
00:06:47 Great.
00:06:48 I don't know, he's kind of arrogant.
00:07:00 Maybe not arrogant.
00:07:01 Maybe he's a little pesky or cocky.
00:07:04 Maybe he's just sure of himself.
00:07:06 I mean, he's definitely not sure of me, I can tell you that.
00:07:09 But I'm just going to meet him here later
00:07:11 for some Christmas cocoa.
00:07:13 Why are you smiling at me like that?
00:07:14 What, can't I smile at my daughter?
00:07:17 Maybe I'm just, you know, filled with Christmas spirit.
00:07:20 That's not a Christmas smile.
00:07:22 Well, it kind of is.
00:07:23 But no, that's an I'm going to meddle in Nicole's life
00:07:26 kind of smile.
00:07:26 How am I meddling?
00:07:28 Because I know that smile.
00:07:29 You're thinking, ooh, she's intrigued by this guy.
00:07:32 Otherwise, why would she be talking about him so much
00:07:35 after only having just met him?
00:07:36 That's what I'm thinking.
00:07:38 Yeah, that's exactly what you're thinking.
00:07:40 All right, so let's just say that you were intrigued,
00:07:42 I believe you said.
00:07:44 What-- what would his name be?
00:07:46 Well, it doesn't matter.
00:07:49 Major Ross.
00:07:50 Major Daniel Ross?
00:07:52 Blonde hair, bright blue eyes?
00:07:54 No, I-- I didn't notice his eyes.
00:07:58 He has very blue eyes.
00:08:00 How do you know that?
00:08:01 Because I know him.
00:08:02 How?
00:08:03 Well, you know that charity that I volunteer for.
00:08:05 Which charity, Mom?
00:08:06 You're like the town of Lacey's champion volunteer.
00:08:09 I like to stay busy.
00:08:11 There's nothing wrong with that.
00:08:12 No, of course there's nothing wrong with that.
00:08:14 Mom, which charity?
00:08:16 A Hand for Warriors.
00:08:17 Oh, the one that works with injured veterans?
00:08:20 Exactly, helping them rebuild their lives.
00:08:22 I met Daniel there.
00:08:24 You know, he established our local chapter.
00:08:27 Wow.
00:08:28 That's nice.
00:08:29 Yeah.
00:08:30 Oh, I really like him.
00:08:32 And he's single, and he would be such a catch for someone.
00:08:38 Mom, I'm not looking for a relationship right now.
00:08:40 I'm very busy.
00:08:41 Busy, yes, yes.
00:08:42 So you've said.
00:08:44 Well, like mother, like daughter.
00:08:46 Oh, touche.
00:08:49 Speaking of which, I have to get back.
00:08:51 I have a lot more patients to see.
00:08:52 No, it's OK, honey.
00:08:53 I'll get the check.
00:08:54 Oh, thanks, Mom.
00:08:57 Oh, and do say hi to Daniel for me.
00:09:00 You sure you should be up there, Major?
00:09:12 I'm fine.
00:09:14 Hey, actually, now that you're here,
00:09:15 I want you to finish up for me, though, OK?
00:09:17 All right.
00:09:18 How was your appointment?
00:09:19 I told you you weren't quick enough to keep
00:09:20 helping me on the court, old man.
00:09:23 I'm still plenty quick, thank you very much.
00:09:25 And it went great.
00:09:26 I'm actually meeting my soon-to-be ex-doctor for a cup
00:09:29 of hot cocoa later today.
00:09:32 You always take your doctor out for cocoa?
00:09:34 When she's as charming and beautiful as Dr. Ramsey is,
00:09:37 seemed like the right thing to do.
00:09:39 So you asked your doctor out on a date?
00:09:42 Here's the thing.
00:09:43 If she tells me my knee is fine, which
00:09:44 she'll do after I get my MRI results,
00:09:46 she won't be my doctor anymore.
00:09:48 And yeah, I really like her, actually.
00:09:51 It's just a cup of Christmas cocoa.
00:09:54 All right.
00:09:56 Cocoa already?
00:09:58 Yes.
00:09:58 I'm all for it.
00:09:59 I want you to meet someone special.
00:10:00 OK, pump the brakes.
00:10:01 We're not getting married yet.
00:10:02 I just said I liked her.
00:10:03 That's all.
00:10:04 Actually, you know her mom.
00:10:05 I ran into her at the hospital, Fran Ramsey.
00:10:08 Well, if this Dr. Ramsey's as nice as her mother is,
00:10:11 then maybe she's worthy of some Christmas cocoa.
00:10:13 OK, I appreciate your approval, Captain.
00:10:15 I'm going to go get ready.
00:10:16 You got to get ready?
00:10:17 For cocoa?
00:10:19 Do this time.
00:10:19 Your last patient of the day before your date.
00:10:30 It's not a date.
00:10:32 Seems like one.
00:10:32 I saw you fixing your makeup a little while ago.
00:10:35 No, I just--
00:10:36 I smudged it when I rubbed my eye earlier.
00:10:38 Oh, right.
00:10:39 No, I did.
00:10:40 I'm a notorious smudger.
00:10:41 That's why I barely wear any makeup.
00:10:43 You did a nice job with that barely any blush.
00:10:45 Or is it natural in anticipation of your date?
00:10:48 Oh, you stop calling me that.
00:10:50 I am just going for a cheerful cup of Christmas
00:10:52 cocoa with Daniel so he'll get his MRI and that's it.
00:10:55 Daniel, huh?
00:10:56 That's his name.
00:10:57 And will you give me the name of my last patient, please?
00:11:00 You're going to love him.
00:11:01 He's Mr. Morton, and he's in room two with his wife.
00:11:03 He's one of our last surviving World War II vets in the area.
00:11:06 He's having some hip problems.
00:11:08 I look forward to meeting him.
00:11:09 [KNOCKING]
00:11:13 Hi, Mr. and Mrs. Morton.
00:11:18 I'm Dr. Ramsey.
00:11:20 Oh, hello, dear.
00:11:22 Did Marilyn tell you why we were here?
00:11:24 OK, one minute, Millie.
00:11:26 She just came in the room.
00:11:28 She's always been an impatient one.
00:11:32 I have reviewed your chart.
00:11:33 And after we chat a bit, I have some thoughts about how I
00:11:36 can help that hip feel better.
00:11:38 No good.
00:11:39 I want to get this old man's hip fixed
00:11:41 so that we can finally take that ballroom dancing class
00:11:44 that he's been promising me forever.
00:11:47 What do you mean forever?
00:11:49 Well, we've been married 76 years,
00:11:51 and you promised me on our honeymoon.
00:11:54 I think that qualifies as forever, don't you, Dr. Ramsey?
00:11:58 Now, don't let her cajole you into taking her side.
00:12:01 We just haven't got around to it.
00:12:04 Yeah, I was quite a good dancer in my younger days.
00:12:07 I turned quite a few French ladies' heads back in the war.
00:12:11 Yes, and I put a quick end to any head turning
00:12:15 when you got back home.
00:12:16 She's right.
00:12:17 I met her when I got home from the war,
00:12:19 and I knew right away she'd be the only dance
00:12:24 partner I would ever want for the rest of my life.
00:12:29 It's really beautiful.
00:12:32 I wish my grandmother would have had the chance
00:12:34 to enjoy the long, wonderful marriage you two clearly have.
00:12:38 Did your grandfather pass young?
00:12:41 He did.
00:12:43 Like you, Mr. Morton, he served in World War II.
00:12:47 He was killed in Italy just before Christmas,
00:12:50 towards the end of the war.
00:12:53 You lost so many good men.
00:12:57 I sometimes wonder why I--
00:13:00 I know why.
00:13:02 You were saved to take me dancing.
00:13:04 I'm sorry about your grandpa.
00:13:11 They were all heroes, including this old poop.
00:13:16 Your family can rest easy in knowing that.
00:13:19 Thank you, both of you.
00:13:23 Now, Mr. Morton, let's take a look at your hem.
00:13:27 Thank you.
00:13:31 Hey, there she is.
00:13:32 Hey, I hope I didn't keep you waiting.
00:13:34 Your text did say 4 o'clock, right?
00:13:35 No, no, you are right on time, yeah.
00:13:38 OK, I hope you don't mind.
00:13:39 I went ahead and ordered us cocoa.
00:13:42 Not at all.
00:13:43 Oh, I love that mine has a cherry on top.
00:13:45 Usually don't see that with cocoa.
00:13:47 That's because I ordered you the Rudolph,
00:13:49 hence the cherry on top, and I got myself the Dasher,
00:13:52 which is just dashed and sprinkled.
00:13:54 Very cute.
00:13:55 Well, it looks delicious, and I could use something warm.
00:13:58 Even that short walk over made me chilly.
00:14:00 I actually hope it snows.
00:14:01 I love it when it snows, especially at Christmas.
00:14:04 Yeah, me too.
00:14:05 You know what makes you chilly?
00:14:06 Oh, well, as long as I have a way to warm up again,
00:14:08 absolutely.
00:14:11 I mean, like a hot drink.
00:14:13 Right.
00:14:14 I can't wait to try this.
00:14:16 Yeah, let's go.
00:14:17 Oh, that's delicious.
00:14:24 Nothing like hot cocoa at Christmas time.
00:14:26 What?
00:14:27 Nothing.
00:14:28 No, I just-- I really appreciate
00:14:29 an enthusiastic cocoa drinker.
00:14:31 Cheers.
00:14:33 Oh, that is good.
00:14:34 Oh, oh.
00:14:35 Do I have something?
00:14:36 So do you.
00:14:37 Oh my gosh.
00:14:38 Oh my gosh.
00:14:41 Thank you so much for coming.
00:14:42 Yeah.
00:14:43 You know, how did you get my number?
00:14:45 Because I realized after you left, I never gave it to you.
00:14:48 Oh, I have my sources.
00:14:49 It's top secret military clearance stuff.
00:14:52 I can't really get into it.
00:14:53 My mother.
00:14:54 I can neither confirm nor deny.
00:14:56 You just did.
00:14:57 She told me about a hand for four years.
00:14:59 I love what you're doing there.
00:15:00 Thanks.
00:15:01 Well, your mom actually is a huge help.
00:15:03 She has such a passion for helping veterans.
00:15:05 Yeah, well, you must too.
00:15:06 Fourth generation military family.
00:15:08 You could say it's in my blood, I guess.
00:15:11 Hey, listen, tomorrow's Saturday.
00:15:12 We're actually having an open house down at the HFW Center.
00:15:15 You should come down.
00:15:16 I would love it if you came.
00:15:17 No blackmail this time, I promise.
00:15:19 Oh, well, OK then.
00:15:21 It's a date.
00:15:22 Yes, it is.
00:15:23 Great.
00:15:24 I mean, yes, it's great.
00:15:29 You know, I scheduled that MRI for you.
00:15:31 He kind of flusters me.
00:15:41 You don't get flustered.
00:15:42 Yeah, I know.
00:15:43 Besides, I barely know him.
00:15:45 Well, then, get to know him.
00:15:48 I will.
00:15:50 I might.
00:15:50 [DOORBELL RINGS]
00:15:51 Oh.
00:15:52 Ah.
00:15:56 Oh, here you go, Mom.
00:15:58 Put him here.
00:15:59 Thank you, honey.
00:16:00 Oh, Mom, you're going to send Dad into sugar shock.
00:16:10 No, it's for the holiday open house
00:16:12 at a Hand for Warriors tomorrow.
00:16:14 Daniel invited me to come.
00:16:16 Oh?
00:16:19 And?
00:16:21 And I'm looking forward to it.
00:16:23 Good.
00:16:25 Now, I always wondered why Grandma
00:16:26 kept this box in the kitchen.
00:16:28 Well, she spent a lot of her time in this kitchen.
00:16:32 She liked to keep her memories of Dad close to her.
00:16:35 Oh, I met the most amazing couple today,
00:16:39 Joe and Millie Morton.
00:16:41 Oh, I know Joe.
00:16:43 He's come by the center before.
00:16:45 Such a nice man.
00:16:46 Mm-hmm.
00:16:47 And she is a firecracker.
00:16:48 Well, you know, your grandmother
00:16:49 could be a firecracker, too.
00:16:51 I always loved that about her.
00:16:53 Yeah, I did, too.
00:16:55 Wow.
00:16:56 Just 20 years older than a new father when he died.
00:17:02 I used to love looking through these with Grandma.
00:17:07 I did, too.
00:17:10 You never met me, nor me him.
00:17:13 Yeah, but you know from all the letters
00:17:14 Grandma saved how happy he was that you were born
00:17:17 safely after he went overseas.
00:17:19 And he couldn't wait to meet me.
00:17:23 Oh, Grandma said that this was taken right before he left?
00:17:27 Yes, yes.
00:17:30 He promised her that when he came home,
00:17:32 he was going to build her a house for his new family.
00:17:36 Wow, I can just imagine him taking out these photos
00:17:40 to remind him of home and how much he was loved and missed.
00:17:50 You know, you used to tell me not to ask
00:17:51 Grandma about his death to avoid upsetting her.
00:17:56 Yeah.
00:17:57 Mom said the War Department said he was killed in a battle
00:18:05 in northern Italy.
00:18:07 The entire company was ambushed.
00:18:08 They never stood a chance.
00:18:11 Very few survivors.
00:18:12 Hmm.
00:18:16 Oh.
00:18:18 Here.
00:18:20 This was the last letter that she had from him.
00:18:24 She got it a few weeks before.
00:18:25 He was telling her just how beautiful it was there,
00:18:30 despite it being a war, and about
00:18:34 all these little picturesque Italian villages.
00:18:39 But all he wanted was to just come back home to see us.
00:18:47 You never know about this letter.
00:18:49 No, she kept that one private.
00:18:50 She only let me see it once.
00:18:52 My mom would say is that he died a hero
00:18:54 doing what he was meant to do.
00:18:56 Why do you keep the deed to the house in this box?
00:19:04 The government gave Mom $10,000 after Dad
00:19:07 was killed as a death benefit.
00:19:09 She used that to build this house and raise me.
00:19:13 So he kept his promise to her?
00:19:15 Yes, he did.
00:19:17 He'll always be a part of this home.
00:19:18 Hey, Mom, would you mind if I try to find
00:19:31 out more about how he died?
00:19:33 Oh, sure, honey.
00:19:35 Yeah, well, I've always wondered about that myself.
00:19:38 I just never wanted to upset your grandmother.
00:19:41 Yeah, I'd like to know more about Horrible John T. Medlin.
00:19:44 And I think it might be the perfect Christmas
00:19:46 present for our family.
00:19:49 And I think I might know the perfect person to help me.
00:19:52 Oh.
00:19:53 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:19:56 [CHATTER]
00:19:59 Hello, Doctor.
00:20:24 Oh.
00:20:25 Hey.
00:20:26 Since we're away from the office,
00:20:28 I think it's fine if you call me Nicole.
00:20:30 Even though I haven't had my MRI yet, Major?
00:20:33 I think the ethics board will be fine with it.
00:20:35 OK.
00:20:37 I really do appreciate you meeting me here.
00:20:38 I-- I've just loved it since I was a kid.
00:20:41 Isn't it great?
00:20:42 Always puts me in a Christmassy mood.
00:20:45 You're OK? You're not too cold, are you?
00:20:46 Not at all.
00:20:47 No, I feel warm, actually.
00:20:49 Good.
00:20:50 Good.
00:20:51 So how can I help?
00:20:54 It's just advice, really.
00:20:55 OK.
00:20:56 I admire all the work you're doing helping
00:20:58 veterans and their families.
00:20:59 Well, it's not just me.
00:21:01 Oh, that's the beauty of it.
00:21:03 Anyway, my-- my grandfather, he was killed in World War II.
00:21:07 Oh.
00:21:08 I didn't know that.
00:21:09 Fran never mentioned it.
00:21:10 Oh, well, when my grandmother was alive,
00:21:12 we didn't really talk about it because it made her sad.
00:21:15 But now-- now I want to know everything.
00:21:17 I want to know who was with him when he died.
00:21:20 I want to know where he was.
00:21:21 Sure, I can understand that.
00:21:22 Yeah, and all I know right now is
00:21:24 that it was just before Christmas
00:21:27 in 1944 in northern Italy.
00:21:29 OK.
00:21:31 Yeah.
00:21:31 Can I get two, please?
00:21:34 You know, my-- my grandmother, she never remarried.
00:21:36 She always said she was lucky enough
00:21:38 to marry the love of her life, and that was enough for her.
00:21:42 I asked my mom if she would be OK with me trying
00:21:45 to find out more about him, and she said she would.
00:21:49 I think it would mean a lot to her, more than she lets on.
00:21:52 Since my grandma passed last year,
00:21:54 she's just poured herself into her volunteer work.
00:21:56 Well, I've definitely noticed that.
00:21:58 No one works harder than Fran.
00:22:00 I think she's hurting.
00:22:03 But I believe this would bring her some peace.
00:22:06 I know it would be.
00:22:07 Well, that sounds like a very noble cause,
00:22:09 and I'd be happy to help.
00:22:10 You know, I actually play basketball
00:22:11 with a guy in the rec league that works at the casualty
00:22:14 office on the base.
00:22:14 So we need to start there on Monday.
00:22:16 Oh, that would mean the world to me.
00:22:18 Thank you.
00:22:20 My pleasure.
00:22:22 Here we go.
00:22:25 Chocolate.
00:22:26 [CHUCKLES]
00:22:28 I'm looking forward to seeing a hand for Warrior Center.
00:22:35 Oh, well, I'd be happy to come pick you up.
00:22:37 Oh, no, no.
00:22:38 I know you have a lot going on this afternoon
00:22:40 to prepare for the party, so I'll just come by with my dad.
00:22:42 Oh, I'm looking forward to meeting him.
00:22:44 Oh, yeah.
00:22:46 You'll be meeting my dad.
00:22:48 What?
00:22:49 I am great with dads.
00:22:52 No, I'm-- I'm sure you are.
00:22:55 Yeah.
00:22:56 Daniel said he'd watch for us.
00:23:17 And I would like to put eyes on this Daniel.
00:23:20 Dad, I'm not 16.
00:23:22 And I'm not dating Daniel.
00:23:24 Well, maybe not yet.
00:23:26 But that twinkle in your eyes isn't coming from those
00:23:29 Christmas tree lights.
00:23:32 Doctor Nicole.
00:23:34 Dr. Nicole.
00:23:35 Daniel, this is my father, Ted Ramsey.
00:23:39 Dad, this is my--
00:23:41 this is my major--
00:23:43 Daniel's fine.
00:23:44 Pleasure to meet you, sir.
00:23:45 Now, I haven't known her long, but you
00:23:47 have quite the daughter here.
00:23:48 Yes.
00:23:48 Yes, I do.
00:23:49 Thank you.
00:23:51 And it's a pleasure to meet you, Daniel.
00:23:53 Perhaps we could have a chat a bit later.
00:23:56 Oh, I don't think that's--
00:23:57 Yeah, absolutely.
00:23:57 That'd be great.
00:23:59 Maybe you can tell me a little more about Nicole here.
00:24:00 I really don't think that's a good-- oh.
00:24:02 Oh, look, dad.
00:24:03 There's mom.
00:24:03 Why don't you go help her?
00:24:06 Oh.
00:24:07 That's my signal to beat it.
00:24:10 I'll talk to you later.
00:24:11 Looking forward to it, sir.
00:24:12 What, you didn't-- you didn't have to send him off
00:24:18 like that, you know?
00:24:19 I can hold my own with fathers of women that I--
00:24:21 Women you've--
00:24:22 You know, women that I invite to the center to show around
00:24:26 is what I was going to--
00:24:27 Oh, spoon.
00:24:28 Actually, I'd love it if you'd show me around.
00:24:32 Great.
00:24:33 It'd be my pleasure.
00:24:34 We'll start over here.
00:24:35 Peppermint biscotti's going fast.
00:24:42 Oh, easy, easy.
00:24:45 Yep.
00:24:46 It's easy to see why people love these things.
00:24:49 They're my favorite.
00:24:50 I know.
00:24:52 And I saw you with Daniel and Nicole.
00:24:55 Yeah.
00:24:56 So what'd you think of them?
00:24:58 Well, first of all, I barely met the guy.
00:25:02 And second of all, he seems very nice.
00:25:05 And third of all, stop trying to fix
00:25:07 our daughter up with someone.
00:25:08 No, I didn't fix her up with him.
00:25:10 She met him all on her own.
00:25:12 Exactly.
00:25:13 And as she's fond of telling me, and she's right,
00:25:16 she is a grown woman and has been
00:25:18 a grown woman for some time.
00:25:21 And it's up to her whether she wants
00:25:22 to have someone in her life.
00:25:24 And if she does, when she does, and who it is.
00:25:28 Although I have to say, it was really nice
00:25:30 to see that spark in her eye when he walked up.
00:25:34 That's all I'm saying.
00:25:36 It's not all you are saying.
00:25:38 But I love you for it.
00:25:39 Oh.
00:25:41 And I love your biscotti.
00:25:42 And this is really the last one.
00:25:43 Is it? - Yeah.
00:25:44 Really?
00:25:45 So you help veterans of all branches of service here?
00:25:49 Yeah, yeah.
00:25:49 Any struggling soldier or veteran can come to us.
00:25:52 We help them reintegrate into their communities,
00:25:54 sometimes coordinating vital services,
00:25:56 you know, counseling, therapy.
00:25:59 Sometimes it's more direct assistance,
00:26:01 like financial aid or helping them with food, groceries,
00:26:06 clothing, that kind of thing.
00:26:07 Whatever they need.
00:26:07 Wow.
00:26:08 What an honorable mission.
00:26:10 Well, we're just getting started, really.
00:26:12 Hey.
00:26:13 Oh, boy.
00:26:15 This is my best friend here.
00:26:16 Now, judging from the look in your eyes,
00:26:19 I'm going to take a wild guess and say
00:26:21 that you must be Nicole.
00:26:23 I am.
00:26:24 Hi.
00:26:25 What's wrong with my eyes?
00:26:25 There's nothing wrong with them.
00:26:26 But if we were in the fifth grade, we'd call them goo goo.
00:26:30 I'm so sorry, Nicole.
00:26:31 This child here is actually Captain Mark Jennings,
00:26:34 though you'd never know it from the way he acts.
00:26:36 Hi, nice to meet you.
00:26:37 Nice to meet you.
00:26:38 So what do you think of our facility, Nicole?
00:26:40 Oh, it's beyond impressive.
00:26:43 What you're doing is so important.
00:26:45 Well, honestly, none of it would be
00:26:46 possible without Mark here.
00:26:47 No, no, no, no.
00:26:48 He tries to give me the credit.
00:26:49 But the truth is, this place would
00:26:50 not be here without Dave.
00:26:52 OK.
00:26:53 And also, neither of us really care about credit.
00:26:55 We just want to help our comrades in arms.
00:26:57 OK, well, then all modesty aside,
00:26:58 why don't you tell Nicole how this all came about?
00:27:01 Oh, yeah, please do.
00:27:03 Well, OK.
00:27:06 When I came back from an overseas tour,
00:27:08 I was in rough shape.
00:27:11 It was a vehicle crash due to an IED explosion.
00:27:14 Yeah, I was in a trailing vehicle.
00:27:15 I was lucky, actually.
00:27:16 But Mark here, he was touch and go for a minute there.
00:27:19 We almost lost him.
00:27:20 Yeah.
00:27:21 The doctors overseas were amazing,
00:27:23 and I made it back ultimately.
00:27:25 But I had a stroke, and my life was really shattered.
00:27:29 Honestly, I didn't know if I was going to recover.
00:27:32 But I did, thanks to this guy.
00:27:34 He made sure I had everything I needed.
00:27:36 And thankfully, now I'm almost back to normal.
00:27:39 Yeah, almost.
00:27:40 Just his annoying personality.
00:27:42 It's the only thing.
00:27:43 They just can't-- some things are incurable.
00:27:46 But no, after that experience, I realized
00:27:49 that none of our military brothers or sisters
00:27:52 should ever go through anything like that alone, right?
00:27:55 Everybody needs help, and military
00:27:58 looks out for military.
00:27:59 Always have, always will.
00:28:00 Yeah.
00:28:02 I'm truly overwhelmed what you guys are accomplishing.
00:28:06 Well, there's a lot left to do, honestly.
00:28:09 Yeah, we've been working hard to raise money
00:28:11 to build a residential rehab facility on the land
00:28:15 next to the center.
00:28:17 It's been going pretty well, the fundraising,
00:28:19 but just couldn't make it the rest of the way.
00:28:22 Folks are stretched pretty thin nowadays,
00:28:24 and we're trying to close the gap.
00:28:26 But we're out of time, aren't we, pal?
00:28:28 Yeah, the gentleman who owns the land
00:28:29 has been very patient, giving us every opportunity
00:28:32 to purchase it.
00:28:32 But that generosity only goes so far,
00:28:35 because he's got other interested buyers.
00:28:37 Yeah, but from what I've seen of you two,
00:28:40 you're not giving up the fight yet.
00:28:41 Absolutely not.
00:28:42 You kidding me?
00:28:45 But hey, Nicole, can I get you something to drink or anything?
00:28:48 I've dominated all your time since you've been here.
00:28:50 Yeah, I'm fine.
00:28:51 I'm fine. Thank you.
00:28:52 No, I'm happy to be--
00:28:54 you know, to give up my--
00:28:57 OK, I'm just going to let you two figure this out.
00:29:00 Nicole, very nice to meet you.
00:29:02 You too.
00:29:03 Buddy? - OK.
00:29:04 Yeah.
00:29:04 See you later.
00:29:06 He's a good guy, actually.
00:29:07 You know, I know this is last minute notice,
00:29:14 but kind of seems to be our MO.
00:29:16 Yeah, doesn't it?
00:29:17 But my parents are hosting a small Christmas gathering
00:29:20 at their house tomorrow.
00:29:22 And, well, there'll only be a few of us there.
00:29:24 And I'd really love it if you'd come.
00:29:27 Oh, I'm supposed to hang out with Mark tomorrow.
00:29:28 But let's see, you, Mark, really not much of a choice.
00:29:31 Yeah, I would love to come.
00:29:32 Oh, great.
00:29:33 I have a better idea.
00:29:34 Why don't you see if Mark wants to come too?
00:29:36 He would love that, I'm sure.
00:29:37 Great.
00:29:38 Well, there's just one small catch.
00:29:42 Catch?
00:29:42 I do hope you boys are comfortable with the wardrobe
00:29:54 for our Christmas festivities today.
00:29:57 Comfortable, of course we are.
00:29:58 And Daniel here would wear a sweater
00:30:00 like this every day during Christmas
00:30:02 if he didn't have to wear his army uniform.
00:30:03 Is that right?
00:30:04 It's true.
00:30:05 I actually love--
00:30:06 Attention.
00:30:07 [LAUGHTER]
00:30:07 There he is.
00:30:08 I was going to say Christmas, actually.
00:30:10 Thank you.
00:30:11 You guys are good sports.
00:30:12 And I promise, we're going to have a lot of fun today.
00:30:15 It's a Ramsay family tradition.
00:30:17 Yes.
00:30:17 And Marilyn, so nice to have you with us today.
00:30:20 I'm honored.
00:30:21 Really?
00:30:22 Well, you look so pretty.
00:30:24 Doesn't she, Mark?
00:30:25 Mom?
00:30:26 Yes.
00:30:28 Why don't you share with everyone
00:30:29 how our tradition came about?
00:30:31 That's a great idea.
00:30:33 I'm sorry, did I miss something there?
00:30:35 I just-- - No.
00:30:36 No.
00:30:37 No, no, OK.
00:30:38 OK, you two.
00:30:39 So--
00:30:40 OK.
00:30:41 My mom always loved to celebrate Christmas.
00:30:44 But she didn't just celebrate the holiday,
00:30:46 she would celebrate my father.
00:30:47 My grandfather died in World War II just before Christmas.
00:30:51 And Grandma and he had been married just over a year,
00:30:54 and my mom had just been born.
00:30:56 Oh, that's so sad.
00:30:58 Yeah, it was hard on my mom at times,
00:31:00 but she was a strong woman of faith.
00:31:04 She would always focus on Jesus at Christmas,
00:31:07 knowing that he was born to reconcile all mankind to God.
00:31:11 What an amazing gift he gave us.
00:31:14 And she would always insist that Christmas
00:31:16 was a time to celebrate with thankfulness,
00:31:18 with joy, and with fun.
00:31:22 And that's why she started up these spirit
00:31:25 sweater holiday parties.
00:31:27 Spirit sweaters.
00:31:29 My mother-in-law Dorothy felt that there was literally
00:31:32 nothing you-ward about Christmas.
00:31:37 And she thought instead that if everyone came together
00:31:41 for the party and wore a festive sweater,
00:31:45 then they could express their own unique Christmas spirit.
00:31:49 You-ward.
00:31:51 Ugly.
00:31:52 No, no, no, no.
00:31:53 Don't say that.
00:31:54 Unroll, and you--
00:31:55 You can't refer to any spirit sweater as you-ward.
00:31:59 No, I got it out.
00:32:01 I apologize.
00:32:01 I'm sorry about him.
00:32:05 And sometimes it would be the four of us,
00:32:06 and then others it would be like this year, where we would
00:32:09 meet people along the way, and we would invite
00:32:11 them to celebrate with us.
00:32:13 And who were Christmas spirited.
00:32:15 Well, I mean, that's us, clearly, right?
00:32:17 Absolutely.
00:32:18 So we'll go around the room, and each of us
00:32:20 will say why their sweater represents the best
00:32:22 of the Christmas spirit to them.
00:32:24 Oh, I love that.
00:32:25 It's so sweet.
00:32:26 I love it, too.
00:32:28 Oh, yeah.
00:32:30 And of course, we'll have lots of treats to go with it.
00:32:33 In fact, why don't you and Marilyn head into the kitchen?
00:32:35 Because I have a nice jug of eggnog.
00:32:37 You can bring that in, and a lovely tray of cookies, please.
00:32:42 Yeah, sure.
00:32:43 Absolutely.
00:32:44 Thank you.
00:32:45 Cookies, eggnog.
00:32:46 Mm-hmm.
00:32:47 Ay.
00:32:53 Mom?
00:32:56 Hey.
00:32:56 Hi.
00:32:57 Sorry.
00:32:59 Is it me, or does it seem like she's trying to upset us up?
00:33:02 Yes, as soon as she saw us today.
00:33:04 Nicole says it's kind of a hobby of friends.
00:33:06 Drives the girl crazy, but she knows
00:33:08 her heart's in the right place.
00:33:10 That's funny.
00:33:11 Why is it funny?
00:33:13 Well, I mean, we're the best friends, right?
00:33:15 We're the sidekicks.
00:33:17 I know it's early days, but I'm really rooting for Nicole
00:33:20 and Daniel to get together.
00:33:21 Mm-hmm.
00:33:22 There's definitely something brewing between them.
00:33:23 Right? You see it, too?
00:33:24 Of course.
00:33:25 And you're right.
00:33:26 It'd be right out of a rom-com for the sidekicks
00:33:29 to end up together, too.
00:33:30 That would be funny.
00:33:31 Yeah, it'd be hilarious.
00:33:32 Hilarious?
00:33:33 Well, no, I don't mean hilarious in a bad way.
00:33:38 I was agreeing with you.
00:33:38 I was saying it would be funny if you and I were to develop
00:33:42 feelings for each other, too.
00:33:45 Or maybe it wouldn't be?
00:33:46 Oh, I'm sorry, friend.
00:33:48 We were just coming with the eggnog.
00:33:50 And the cookie's right here.
00:33:51 Thank you.
00:33:52 Continue doing what you're doing.
00:33:53 It's all good.
00:33:54 We're not doing anything.
00:33:55 We're not doing anything, no.
00:33:55 We're just talking.
00:33:57 Well, then just continue not doing, kind of doing,
00:33:59 whatever.
00:34:00 I'm fine.
00:34:02 OK, everyone, let's take our seats, please.
00:34:04 We're going to start telling our stories.
00:34:06 OK.
00:34:07 Daniel, why don't you and Nicole sit down over on that one?
00:34:10 Perfect. Yes, Marilyn.
00:34:11 You can sit right there.
00:34:12 And I'll take those.
00:34:14 Thank you, Mark.
00:34:15 You can sit beside her.
00:34:16 They can choose their own seats.
00:34:18 I'm just trying to be a very good hostess.
00:34:20 You're being a great hostess, if I may say.
00:34:22 Thank you, Daniel.
00:34:23 And I, for one, love my seat.
00:34:26 And I love my seat, too.
00:34:28 OK, see?
00:34:29 Perfect.
00:34:31 All right, so who would like to start?
00:34:34 Tell us about your sweater and what the Christmas
00:34:37 spirit means to you.
00:34:38 OK, I will break the ice.
00:34:40 Good.
00:34:41 [LAUGHTER]
00:34:43 So my turkey's name is Ted.
00:34:46 Oh, Ted, you named your turkey after yourself?
00:34:51 Well, there is a little resemblance.
00:34:53 OK.
00:34:54 But Daniel and Mark, as you both well know,
00:34:57 an army marches on its stomach.
00:34:59 Yes, sir.
00:35:00 And so too does Christmas, because sharing
00:35:04 traditional food and drinks with family and friends
00:35:08 is the epitome of the Christmas spirit to me.
00:35:12 And I look forward to it every year.
00:35:15 Well said, Dad.
00:35:17 And he says that every year.
00:35:19 Because I like to eat every year.
00:35:21 [LAUGHTER]
00:35:23 Marilyn, would you mind going next?
00:35:25 Not at all.
00:35:26 For me, Christmas is for everyone, of course.
00:35:30 But it's especially about children, their innocence,
00:35:34 their pure joy.
00:35:36 I see it in my nieces and nephews' faces,
00:35:38 and it makes me so happy.
00:35:40 So that's Christmas spirit to me.
00:35:41 Mm-hmm.
00:35:42 Aw.
00:35:43 Very nice.
00:35:44 Very nice.
00:35:44 That was lovely.
00:35:46 Mark, I think you should follow that now.
00:35:49 Oh, boy.
00:35:49 Sure.
00:35:50 All right.
00:35:51 [LAUGHTER]
00:35:52 Well, as some of you in this room may know,
00:35:56 I'm a bit of a--
00:35:58 how do I say it-- a goofy guy.
00:35:59 What?
00:36:00 No one noticed that.
00:36:01 You hid it so well.
00:36:02 Thank you, former best friend.
00:36:03 [LAUGHTER]
00:36:06 But this reindeer reminds me of how
00:36:09 I felt about Christmas ever since I was a kid.
00:36:12 It's about imagination and fun and believing that reindeer
00:36:18 really do know how to fly.
00:36:21 Feeling this way has got me through some hard times,
00:36:24 and it's made the good times even better.
00:36:27 So that's Christmas spirit to me.
00:36:30 Mm.
00:36:31 Yeah.
00:36:32 That was beautiful, Mark.
00:36:34 Didn't know you had it in you, pal.
00:36:35 [LAUGHTER]
00:36:37 All right, I did.
00:36:38 OK, we're best friends again.
00:36:39 [LAUGHTER]
00:36:41 All right, hostess with the mostest, your turn.
00:36:44 All right, that's very easy.
00:36:47 I chose the Christmas wreath, because to me, Christmas
00:36:51 is all about family and unity.
00:36:55 And it's also a complete unbroken circle.
00:36:59 So it includes those who are no longer with us.
00:37:04 And that is the perfect Christmas spirit.
00:37:09 That was great, Fran.
00:37:09 Should I go?
00:37:14 Absolutely.
00:37:15 OK.
00:37:16 Well, it's probably no surprise that my feelings on Christmas
00:37:20 were formed growing up in a military family,
00:37:22 and then, of course, joining the Army myself.
00:37:26 But Christmas to me is about giving
00:37:29 and about sacrificing for others.
00:37:32 I mean, in the end, isn't that what Jesus did for all of us?
00:37:35 So it sounds simple, but I think it's pretty profound.
00:37:42 Hear, hear, Daniel.
00:37:44 Thank you, Fran.
00:37:46 I believe you're up, Doctor.
00:37:48 Oh, OK, my turn.
00:37:51 Well, when I was a little girl, my grandma
00:37:56 always let me put the star on top of the tree.
00:38:00 And back then, I always wondered,
00:38:02 why do we put a star on the tree?
00:38:05 Why do you place it so high?
00:38:07 And I know now that the star lit the path.
00:38:11 It guided the way.
00:38:12 It allowed those to follow where God was leading them.
00:38:16 That star so high in the sky was a beacon of hope.
00:38:21 That inspires us.
00:38:23 We just need to follow it.
00:38:24 Good morning.
00:38:35 Hi there.
00:38:36 Thanks.
00:38:37 Early start today?
00:38:38 Yeah, I took the early shift because Daniel and I are
00:38:41 running an errand together this afternoon.
00:38:42 It was so nice to see him last night, to see everyone.
00:38:45 Your family is amazing.
00:38:47 Thank you for including me.
00:38:48 Oh, thank you for coming.
00:38:50 I hope my mom's matchmaking tendrils
00:38:52 didn't grab onto you too hard.
00:38:54 She was totally fine.
00:38:56 Mark is nice, actually.
00:38:59 But now we have a young man waiting for us in exam room
00:39:01 eight, shoulder issues.
00:39:03 Come in.
00:39:09 Good morning, Private Southworth.
00:39:12 I'm Dr. Ramsey.
00:39:13 You've already met Nurse Marilyn.
00:39:16 I understand you're dealing with some lingering issues
00:39:18 on your left shoulder from an injury you sustained
00:39:20 while deployed overseas.
00:39:21 Yeah, that's-- that's right.
00:39:27 Vitals are all good, just BP's a smidge high.
00:39:31 Can you tell me a bit more about how you got the injury, Private?
00:39:41 I, uh-- I was thrown from a vehicle
00:39:48 and landed on my shoulder.
00:39:50 Was the vehicle going very fast?
00:39:54 Yeah, yeah, it was.
00:39:55 We were in a pursuit when we got cut off.
00:40:09 I, uh-- I, uh--
00:40:13 I landed-- I landed hard on my shoulder.
00:40:17 Landon, Landon, I need you to slow your breath down.
00:40:20 Breathe through your nose.
00:40:21 Have some water.
00:40:26 Thank you.
00:40:38 I'm sorry.
00:40:40 You have nothing to apologize for.
00:40:41 I, uh-- I lost a close friend that day.
00:40:51 And, uh, I've been dealing with some PTSD stuff
00:40:55 since I got back.
00:40:56 It's totally understandable.
00:40:59 How long have you been back?
00:41:01 Just-- just a couple of weeks.
00:41:05 I was stationed here at JBLM when I was deployed.
00:41:08 My wife and I like the area.
00:41:11 We have a daughter, and she's so excited about Christmas.
00:41:16 But-- but I--
00:41:20 I just keep asking myself why I'm still here and--
00:41:27 why I'm here and he's--
00:41:28 OK, OK.
00:41:35 Have you received any therapy or counseling
00:41:37 since you've been back?
00:41:40 No, not-- not yet.
00:41:44 I keep thinking I could tough it out, you know?
00:41:48 Trying to be strong for my family
00:41:50 and make sure they have a good Christmas.
00:41:54 Money is so tight.
00:41:56 I'm-- I'm just so tired.
00:42:02 You don't have to do this alone, Landon.
00:42:06 OK, I'm going to check out your shoulder.
00:42:08 We're going to get that fixed up, OK?
00:42:10 And then I'm going to reach out to a friend who
00:42:12 has an organization right here near the base that I
00:42:15 believe can help you.
00:42:17 Thank you.
00:42:19 I appreciate it.
00:42:22 I-- I don't know what else I should say.
00:42:24 Well, I know one thing.
00:42:29 You can be proud of your heroic service.
00:42:31 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:42:34 The-- the real hero was my friend.
00:42:40 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:42:43 This day flew by.
00:42:49 I barely got to talk to you.
00:42:50 I really did, and now I'm off to see Daniel.
00:42:53 I think it's amazing that you guys are going to try and find
00:42:55 out what happened to your grandfather.
00:42:56 Yeah, I hope we can.
00:42:58 Oh, and we're meeting Landon at the HFW Center tonight.
00:43:01 I'm so glad he decided to check it out.
00:43:04 I looked at him in that room so young and in such pain,
00:43:06 my heart just broke.
00:43:07 Yeah, mine too.
00:43:09 But I am confident that Daniel and his team will help him.
00:43:12 Oh, hey, you know that charity I just started
00:43:14 doing some volunteer work for, the one Belinda
00:43:16 at my gym turned me on to?
00:43:18 Santa's Helper, right?
00:43:19 Right.
00:43:20 Belinda's the director over there.
00:43:21 They provide toys and books and things
00:43:23 for military families who are going
00:43:25 through financial hardships.
00:43:26 You heard Landon say how he was struggling with money
00:43:29 and he wanted to try to give his family a nice Christmas.
00:43:32 Yeah, I think that's a great idea.
00:43:33 Good.
00:43:34 We just need someone like Daniel or Mark to refer him,
00:43:37 and then they'll set up an appointment for him
00:43:38 and his wife to go by the workshop
00:43:40 and pick out what they'd like.
00:43:41 There's nothing else to it, really.
00:43:42 I'll talk to Daniel tonight.
00:43:44 Maybe Mark instead.
00:43:46 I could help him coordinate things for Landon.
00:43:49 Mark it is, then.
00:43:50 Thank you, Marilyn.
00:43:56 Sergeant Bates, I can't tell you how much I
00:43:58 appreciate your help with this.
00:44:00 Well, I was glad to look into it for you.
00:44:01 Even if this guy has torched me on the basketball
00:44:04 court one too many times.
00:44:05 I didn't know you were good.
00:44:07 No, I'm not really.
00:44:08 Oh, he's good, all right.
00:44:09 And let's just say zealous on that court.
00:44:11 Oh, I've already seen the results of that zealousness.
00:44:15 How's your knee?
00:44:16 It's fine. Yeah, I'm fine.
00:44:17 It might be fine.
00:44:18 We hope it's fine.
00:44:19 But he does have his MRI appointment tomorrow morning,
00:44:22 doesn't he?
00:44:23 Yes, he does, and he will be there bright and early, doctor.
00:44:26 Ray, what did you find out for us?
00:44:30 It's a challenge, because a lot of the Army personnel records
00:44:33 from World War II were lost in a fire in 1973.
00:44:36 I was able to track down your grandfather's infantry company
00:44:39 major, but unfortunately, there aren't
00:44:41 any present day survivors.
00:44:43 They'd be the best sources to tell us what happened.
00:44:45 Oh.
00:44:46 It's not unusual, sadly.
00:44:48 World War II was a long time ago.
00:44:51 Many of your grandfather's fellow soldiers
00:44:52 were killed in the battle that took his life.
00:44:54 And the few who did survive have since passed.
00:44:58 So that's it, then?
00:45:01 A dead end?
00:45:01 Not at all.
00:45:02 No, we're going to keep searching.
00:45:04 I have a few ideas for how I might
00:45:06 be able to find out more.
00:45:07 I have some pretty good connections
00:45:09 at National Archives, and I'm going
00:45:11 to try to reconstruct what was lost
00:45:12 in the records as best I can.
00:45:14 I just need a little more time.
00:45:17 Thank you, Ray.
00:45:18 That means a lot.
00:45:20 I'll reach out as soon as I find anything.
00:45:22 Amazing, Ray.
00:45:22 Thank you so much, and I promise to go easy
00:45:24 on you next game, OK?
00:45:25 And I can promise, as his doctor,
00:45:27 he won't be playing that next game until he's fully healed.
00:45:30 Great.
00:45:31 Yes, ma'am.
00:45:32 You know best.
00:45:33 Yes, I do, and don't you forget it.
00:45:34 I couldn't forget anything about you, ever.
00:45:38 You are so smooth, Major.
00:45:40 Maybe you two can continue this on your own.
00:45:43 I have an important mystery to solve.
00:45:44 Yes.
00:45:46 Ray, I really am grateful for anything
00:45:48 you can find out about my grandfather,
00:45:50 for me and for my family.
00:45:53 Of course.
00:45:54 Nicole's here.
00:46:00 She's at the front entrance.
00:46:01 Did you find out more about her grandfather?
00:46:03 Not yet, but we will.
00:46:04 And oh, yeah, Merry Christmas.
00:46:07 Merry Christmas to you.
00:46:08 What's that supposed to mean?
00:46:09 Traditional holiday greeting, Mark.
00:46:11 No, no, no.
00:46:11 I understand that, but you're smirking.
00:46:13 - Am I? - Yes.
00:46:14 That's weird.
00:46:15 Hey, listen, when Nicole asked if we could help get
00:46:16 Private Southworth to Santa's helper, of course I said yes,
00:46:19 but I was thinking maybe you could escort him
00:46:21 and his wife when they go?
00:46:22 Yeah, sure.
00:46:23 Great.
00:46:24 I'm going to make sure you're hooked up with a certain
00:46:25 volunteer over there when you do.
00:46:27 OK, what's his name?
00:46:28 Oh, it's not a him, it's a her.
00:46:30 And I think you know her.
00:46:32 Her name's Marilyn.
00:46:33 Hi again, Landon.
00:46:37 I'm so glad you came.
00:46:39 Hey.
00:46:40 Hi.
00:46:41 Welcome.
00:46:42 He must be Private Southworth.
00:46:43 Yes, sir. Major.
00:46:44 You're not reporting for duty.
00:46:45 You're all right.
00:46:46 When you're at the center, you can call him Daniel.
00:46:48 You can call me Mark.
00:46:49 We want you to feel at ease.
00:46:51 Yes, sir.
00:46:51 These two are going to take very good care of you.
00:46:53 Absolutely.
00:46:54 We're going to get you all the help you need,
00:46:55 all the help you deserve.
00:46:56 Thank you for your service, Landon.
00:46:59 Sure.
00:47:00 Hey, can I ask, how does this all work?
00:47:05 I've been in the exact spot that you are in right now.
00:47:08 I'm going to show you around and tell you all
00:47:10 about the resources we offer.
00:47:12 You got to do just fine.
00:47:13 And Landon, we understand the holidays can be challenging
00:47:15 for military families.
00:47:17 There's an organization here in Lacey called Santa's helper.
00:47:20 They're great.
00:47:21 We actually work really closely with them here, too.
00:47:23 So--
00:47:24 Well, make sure you don't have to worry about getting
00:47:25 gifts for your daughter.
00:47:26 That's just one of the things we'll take off your shoulders.
00:47:29 Really?
00:47:29 Yeah.
00:47:30 I mean, I don't know what to say.
00:47:33 You don't have to say anything.
00:47:34 Just know that we're your brothers and sisters at arms.
00:47:36 We're going to take care of you.
00:47:37 Thank you.
00:47:38 All right.
00:47:39 Welcome.
00:47:39 Thanks.
00:47:40 I'll show you around.
00:47:41 Yeah, this way.
00:47:41 All right.
00:47:42 We'll see you in a bit, OK?
00:47:43 Yes, sir.
00:47:43 We're glad you're here.
00:47:44 Thank you.
00:47:44 Thank you.
00:47:50 Yeah, you don't have to say that.
00:47:51 That's what we do.
00:47:54 You are something.
00:47:57 What, you mean like something good, or--
00:47:59 Well, that's still under consideration.
00:48:01 OK.
00:48:02 But it's looking promising.
00:48:04 Good morning.
00:48:13 Well, hello, Doctor.
00:48:16 That smock really does suit you.
00:48:18 OK.
00:48:19 Remember your name this time?
00:48:21 Yes, I believe I do.
00:48:23 So we won't have your full MRI results
00:48:25 back for a couple of days.
00:48:26 But I was able to pull some strings
00:48:28 and spoke to the radiologist about your scan.
00:48:31 We had looked to see if you'd torn your ACL.
00:48:34 We also took a look at your MCL.
00:48:36 It was as I expected.
00:48:40 What does that mean?
00:48:42 It means you're fine.
00:48:44 I knew it, actually.
00:48:46 I knew it.
00:48:47 OK, OK, slow down there.
00:48:48 I'm not giving you a get out of jail free card.
00:48:50 I need you to take it easy for a while, OK?
00:48:52 Not put any stress on that knee to allow it to fully recover.
00:48:56 And I would like you to schedule a follow-up appointment
00:48:58 with my colleague, Dr. Reynolds, in a couple of weeks, please.
00:49:01 OK.
00:49:02 Wait, your colleague?
00:49:03 Why with your colleague?
00:49:05 Oh, I'm not going to continue being your doctor anymore.
00:49:08 I might have a conflict of interest.
00:49:10 Oh, you might.
00:49:12 You might, huh?
00:49:13 Yeah.
00:49:14 OK.
00:49:17 Oh, hey, voicemail from Ray.
00:49:19 Oh, well, I hope he has some good news for us.
00:49:22 Yeah.
00:49:22 You can get dressed, and I'll meet you out
00:49:24 at the nurse's station.
00:49:25 Wait, no examination?
00:49:28 I didn't have to put this mock on, did I?
00:49:30 He looks so cute on you.
00:49:31 [INAUDIBLE]
00:49:37 [LAUGHTER]
00:49:40 Don't even tell me what you two are giggling about.
00:49:46 I don't want to know.
00:49:47 Sorry, Major, it's girl code anyway.
00:49:49 OK.
00:49:49 So what did Ray say on his message?
00:49:51 OK, so apparently your grandfather's infantry company
00:49:54 joined forces with an Army mountain company briefly
00:49:57 a short time before his death.
00:49:59 That sounds like an encouraging clue.
00:50:00 Yeah.
00:50:01 So how does that help you guys?
00:50:02 There's two surviving members left from this mountain
00:50:04 company.
00:50:05 One of them is apparently quite ill.
00:50:07 He doesn't have much memory left from his time in the war.
00:50:09 The other survivor, a gentleman named Christian Murray,
00:50:12 he lives in Portland, and he's agreed to meet with us
00:50:14 this afternoon.
00:50:15 Now, if it's not this afternoon, he'll
00:50:17 have to wait until the new year.
00:50:18 Oh, no, I definitely want to go today.
00:50:20 I can't stand the idea of waiting.
00:50:22 I thought he might say that.
00:50:23 So what I can do is I can clear my schedule for this afternoon.
00:50:26 I start Christmas vacation tomorrow anyway,
00:50:28 and we could take a day trip.
00:50:31 Yes, you have to go.
00:50:33 I'll talk to Dr. Reynolds about covering for you.
00:50:35 Thank you.
00:50:36 Well, I'm nervous, but I'm excited.
00:50:39 I mean, it could be nothing, but it could be something.
00:50:42 Absolutely.
00:50:43 Let's go to Portland.
00:50:44 What's going on over there?
00:50:50 Oh, these are delicious.
00:50:52 Here, have some.
00:50:55 I'm good now, thanks.
00:50:56 You're good?
00:50:57 How can you be good?
00:50:58 A road trip isn't a road trip without car smerks.
00:51:01 Is that why you cleaned out that convenience store back there?
00:51:04 Do you know nothing about the concept of guilty pleasures?
00:51:08 This is good.
00:51:09 The mysteries of Nicole Ramsey are coming to light.
00:51:13 No mysteries, really.
00:51:15 OK, then have you been in a serious relationship recently?
00:51:20 Not recently.
00:51:21 You're going to have to give me a bit more than that, Doctor.
00:51:23 Have you?
00:51:25 Not recently.
00:51:27 Why not?
00:51:28 I suppose because I haven't been looking for one.
00:51:31 Despite your mother's constant efforts to the contrary.
00:51:34 As my mother well knows, once I decided to change course
00:51:38 and become a doctor, my time's pretty limited.
00:51:41 I totally get that.
00:51:43 It's a long road.
00:51:44 Why not you?
00:51:48 Why not me?
00:51:49 You want to be in a serious relationship with me?
00:51:52 Are you asking me right?
00:51:53 We'll see.
00:51:54 No, just answer the question, Major.
00:51:56 Well, honestly, I think Major is the answer to it, Major.
00:52:00 Now I'm a military man through and through.
00:52:02 I've been stationed all over the place over the years.
00:52:04 Did a few tours overseas.
00:52:06 So it's a long road for you too.
00:52:08 Long and winding and unpredictable road.
00:52:13 I just think it's hard to put someone else through that.
00:52:17 What if they're the one?
00:52:19 You know, my grandmother always talked about my grandfather
00:52:21 being the love of her life.
00:52:25 I don't know.
00:52:26 I guess I just haven't met the right person before now.
00:52:31 Before now?
00:52:34 No, before-- before, before is what I meant.
00:52:39 Yeah, thanks for clarifying.
00:52:40 Yeah, OK.
00:52:42 So wait, OK, you do all this hard work.
00:52:45 You become a doctor, a very good doctor, I might add.
00:52:48 What's next?
00:52:50 Well, I always thought I'd finish out
00:52:52 my commitment in the reserves.
00:52:54 And there's an orthopedic practice in Olympia
00:52:57 that's been interested in me.
00:52:58 Oh, so you'd move?
00:53:03 Well, that's what I was thinking.
00:53:05 I mean, that's what I was thinking before now.
00:53:08 Before now?
00:53:09 No, before-- before.
00:53:12 Before, before.
00:53:12 Mm-hmm.
00:53:13 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:53:17 We're here.
00:53:33 Let's go.
00:53:34 I've prepared some tea, if you'd like.
00:53:50 Yeah, sure, that'd be great.
00:53:51 Thank you. - Thank you.
00:53:52 And here he is.
00:53:54 I saw them drive up.
00:53:56 While you introduce yourselves, I'll get the tea.
00:53:58 Honored to meet you, sir.
00:53:59 I'm Major Daniel Ross.
00:54:00 This is Major Nicole Ramsey.
00:54:02 Hello.
00:54:02 It's nice to meet both of you.
00:54:05 Sergeant Bates told me a little about why you're here.
00:54:08 Sit.
00:54:09 Oh.
00:54:10 Wow, you have such a beautiful home, sir.
00:54:13 And we very much appreciate your meeting us during the holidays
00:54:16 on such short notice.
00:54:18 Oh, well, I'm happy to.
00:54:20 But no more sir from either of you, all right?
00:54:25 Chris will do.
00:54:26 You got it, sir.
00:54:27 Er, Chris.
00:54:30 I am not a knight.
00:54:33 But I wanted to be one when I was a kid.
00:54:36 Instead, I started a commercial shipping company.
00:54:40 And fortunately, it was a success.
00:54:44 My son, Joseph, who you met, he runs it now,
00:54:49 along with one of my granddaughters.
00:54:53 I'm retired now.
00:54:56 Well, you've earned that.
00:54:58 Hm.
00:54:58 Tell me a little bit about your grandfather, will you?
00:55:08 Of course.
00:55:10 His name was John Medlin.
00:55:13 And he was killed in northern Italy in December of 1944.
00:55:21 That was a tough time.
00:55:25 The Italians had surrendered by then.
00:55:27 But the Germans, they increased their presence there.
00:55:34 Sorry to interrupt.
00:55:36 Here you go.
00:55:38 Oh, wow.
00:55:39 Thank you.
00:55:40 Wow, those cookies look amazing.
00:55:43 They were my mom's recipe.
00:55:46 She baked them every Christmas.
00:55:48 She, uh-- she passed three years ago.
00:55:52 Oh, I'm sorry to hear that.
00:55:53 My condolences to both of you.
00:55:56 She was definitely the rock of the family.
00:55:59 My grandmother was that way, too.
00:56:01 Yeah, we-- we lost her this past year.
00:56:04 My condolences.
00:56:06 And she never knew what happened to your grandfather?
00:56:10 Just where and when he died.
00:56:13 That was December 1944.
00:56:16 Ah.
00:56:18 I know that story well.
00:56:20 It can be hard for dad to tell it.
00:56:23 Well, we were told that my grandfather's company had met
00:56:27 up with your company that month, Chris.
00:56:30 They were on the move, both of them, in the mountains.
00:56:33 And they crossed paths briefly.
00:56:35 They were hit by a group of German snipers.
00:56:38 And both companies had to move on quickly
00:56:40 to their intended destination.
00:56:43 Dad was shot by the snipers, gravely injured.
00:56:47 There was a lot of smoke around.
00:56:49 The snipers had been setting fires for diversions.
00:56:52 And in the confusion and haste of battle and moving on,
00:56:56 my father was left behind.
00:56:58 Oh.
00:56:59 But a soldier from your grandfather's company
00:57:03 spotted him as they were moving out and refused to leave him.
00:57:06 He told his squad that he'd catch up with them.
00:57:10 He convinced some local villagers
00:57:13 to help assist in getting dad to a farmhouse.
00:57:15 The Italians were on the Allied side at that point in the war.
00:57:18 And it was there that they summoned a doctor.
00:57:20 He stayed with me in that farmhouse until I was stable
00:57:24 and could be transported home when
00:57:28 other American forces arrived.
00:57:31 That soldier then risked his life traveling alone
00:57:34 to get back to his company.
00:57:37 Dad later learned that that company was virtually wiped out
00:57:40 in a battle a short time after.
00:57:43 That must have been where your grandfather perished.
00:57:48 I am so sorry.
00:57:51 I was badly hurt.
00:57:53 The medications-- I never even got the corporal's name.
00:58:00 He was a corporal?
00:58:06 Mm-hmm.
00:58:07 Chris.
00:58:16 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:58:18 Is this the soldier?
00:58:19 Yes.
00:58:30 Yes.
00:58:32 I remember that face.
00:58:34 I could never forget it, even with that fog.
00:58:43 How can you forget the face of someone who risked everything
00:58:49 to save your life?
00:58:50 That man was my grandfather, Corporal John T. Medlin.
00:59:07 That man, he was a true American hero.
00:59:13 OK, I've got a teddy bear for you.
00:59:21 I'll wear this shirt.
00:59:22 Merry Christmas.
00:59:23 Thank you.
00:59:24 You're welcome.
00:59:25 Merry Christmas.
00:59:25 They do a really good job in here.
00:59:27 It's very, very Christmassy.
00:59:29 You're welcome.
00:59:30 It's great.
00:59:31 You're welcome.
00:59:32 Yeah.
00:59:33 Marilyn, hi.
00:59:34 Hi.
00:59:36 Landon, it's so good to see you again.
00:59:38 Thank you, ma'am.
00:59:39 This is my wife, Louisa.
00:59:40 Hi.
00:59:41 It's nice to meet you.
00:59:43 Thank you for helping us, all of you.
00:59:45 Anything for family, right?
00:59:47 And it's nice that you came along, Mark?
00:59:51 Yeah, I was in the neighborhood.
00:59:52 I just--
00:59:53 Didn't he say that he was really excited to see
00:59:55 Marilyn again? - Did I?
00:59:57 Yeah.
00:59:58 Yeah, yeah.
01:00:00 I might have said that.
01:00:02 Louisa, how old is your daughter, Leila?
01:00:04 She's three.
01:00:05 Yeah?
01:00:06 Does she like reindeer?
01:00:08 She loves them, yeah.
01:00:10 So do I.
01:00:12 All right, well, let's go get some reindeer for Leila.
01:00:14 Yeah.
01:00:15 And maybe one for Mark.
01:00:16 Yes, definitely, for me.
01:00:17 This way, yeah?
01:00:17 Please tell your father how much we
01:00:27 appreciate his time and yours.
01:00:29 Of course.
01:00:30 Thank you both so much for coming.
01:00:32 It meant so much to him.
01:00:33 To find out the name of the man who saved him
01:00:36 meant so much to all of us.
01:00:38 Would it be OK if we came back to visit again sometime?
01:00:40 Absolutely.
01:00:41 And Major Ross. - Yeah?
01:00:43 When Sergeant Bates gave us the names of who'd be visiting
01:00:45 today, I did some online research about you.
01:00:47 And just out of curiosity, this work
01:00:50 you're doing at a hand for warriors, very important.
01:00:53 I admire you.
01:00:54 Well, thank you very much.
01:00:55 I appreciate that.
01:00:56 But got a long way to go.
01:00:59 They're trying to raise funds to build
01:01:00 a residential rehab center.
01:01:02 Helping brain injured veterans relearn
01:01:04 social interaction skills with individualized
01:01:05 treatment programs.
01:01:07 Noble work.
01:01:08 Much needed.
01:01:09 Please, come and see us again.
01:01:11 Thank you.
01:01:11 We will.
01:01:12 Merry Christmas.
01:01:13 Merry Christmas.
01:01:14 Wow.
01:01:20 You said we will in there.
01:01:23 Did I?
01:01:24 Oh, I think that's because you asked if it'd
01:01:26 be OK if we came back, so.
01:01:30 I like the sound of that.
01:01:32 Good.
01:01:33 Me too.
01:01:33 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:01:37 Morning.
01:01:51 Good morning.
01:01:52 What a nice treat to have my favorite daughter
01:01:57 stop by on her way to work.
01:01:59 Your only daughter.
01:02:00 Still my favorite.
01:02:01 Where's dad?
01:02:02 At his morning constitutional, as he likes to call his walks.
01:02:07 Oh, well, good.
01:02:08 I wanted to talk to you first anyway.
01:02:12 You're getting married.
01:02:15 I am?
01:02:15 Yeah.
01:02:16 To whom?
01:02:17 Daniel, of course.
01:02:18 Oh, well, that's news to Daniel and me,
01:02:21 since we're just getting to know each other.
01:02:23 Good.
01:02:24 Well, a girl can always hope.
01:02:25 Well, you can't hope, mom, because I like him a lot.
01:02:30 And he likes you a lot.
01:02:35 I can tell.
01:02:35 But if that's not the news, then what is?
01:02:41 You know, I told you I was going to look into what
01:02:43 happened to grandpa in the war.
01:02:45 Yeah, you borrowed the photo.
01:02:46 Yes, and I'm returning the photo.
01:02:51 By the grace of God and with the help of some amazing people,
01:02:55 I have a story to tell you.
01:02:57 I'm serious.
01:03:04 If you could have seen the look on Nicole's face
01:03:05 when she showed that photo of her grandfather to Christian
01:03:08 and you recognized it, it was like--
01:03:11 Oh, that's a beautiful thing.
01:03:13 And your face right now would best be described as--
01:03:16 Don't say goo goo.
01:03:17 Don't say--
01:03:18 I didn't say it.
01:03:18 You said it, but you're right.
01:03:21 Oh, hey, how did it go with Landon and those guys
01:03:23 at Santa's Helper?
01:03:24 It was great.
01:03:25 It was really great.
01:03:27 Yeah, and?
01:03:28 And we found this really cool reindeer toy for his daughter.
01:03:32 Come on, and?
01:03:33 Clearly, I'm not the only fifth grader in the room.
01:03:36 All right, I like Marilyn.
01:03:38 We're going to hang out and see what happens.
01:03:40 Yeah.
01:03:41 Merry Christmas, buddy.
01:03:42 Merry Christmas.
01:03:43 Hey, hey, hey, listen, listen.
01:03:45 Do me a favor.
01:03:46 Don't screw it up with Nicole, all right?
01:03:48 She's really good for you.
01:03:50 And even though it pains me to say it, you're good for her.
01:03:52 Wait, stop.
01:03:54 Was that a compliment?
01:03:55 Because it sounded like you complimented me.
01:03:56 Yeah, I complimented you.
01:03:57 Must be running a fever or something.
01:03:59 You should get that checked out.
01:04:00 Yeah, yeah, I will.
01:04:01 Wow.
01:04:03 Well, that's just incredible.
01:04:07 Thank you for finding all this out about your grandfather.
01:04:10 I'm just so overwhelmed.
01:04:13 I can't even find the words yet.
01:04:16 I know it's a lot to take in.
01:04:18 Daniel and I would love to bring you to meet Christian one day
01:04:21 if you're up for it.
01:04:22 Yes.
01:04:24 That would be so special.
01:04:26 It would.
01:04:29 Oh, thank you, honey.
01:04:32 Of course, Mama.
01:04:34 I want some of this.
01:04:51 I love this tradition.
01:04:53 And with the base next to us, I'm
01:04:55 so proud that the town honors the military
01:04:57 at Christmas every year.
01:04:58 Well, the service members in the area appreciate it.
01:05:00 I can tell you that.
01:05:01 There certainly are a lot of them here tonight.
01:05:03 It's wonderful.
01:05:04 Daniel, um, hi, Landon.
01:05:07 Hey, guys.
01:05:08 Hey, guys.
01:05:09 Hey, hi.
01:05:12 Yay, I'm so glad they came.
01:05:13 I know that Mark was encouraging them to come, so--
01:05:15 Where is Mark, anyway?
01:05:17 Oh, Mark, he's like a golden retriever puppy.
01:05:20 He probably got distracted by the flashing
01:05:22 lights and lost his way.
01:05:23 I heard that.
01:05:26 He's not wrong.
01:05:27 Hi.
01:05:28 I'll get you a treat if you're good.
01:05:30 I would like two treats, please.
01:05:32 Thanks, guys.
01:05:33 What's up, buddy?
01:05:34 Oh, I think they're about to start.
01:05:35 OK.
01:05:36 Am I ready for this?
01:05:42 You're ready, Mom.
01:05:48 Good evening, everyone, and Merry Christmas.
01:05:52 Merry Christmas.
01:05:54 For those of you that don't know me, I'm Joe Morton,
01:05:58 and I'm a proud United States Army veteran of World War II.
01:06:03 Yay.
01:06:04 [APPLAUSE]
01:06:07 Now, each year, the town of Lacey
01:06:13 likes to honor our service members
01:06:14 with this special lights display.
01:06:18 Tonight, I would like to dedicate this unveiling
01:06:22 to a fallen World War II hero, Corporal John T. Mantler.
01:06:30 Now, if you guys could help me here with the countdown,
01:06:34 I will flip this switch.
01:06:38 Yeah, you ready?
01:06:38 Yes.
01:06:39 All right.
01:06:41 3, 2, 1.
01:06:44 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:06:48 [INAUDIBLE]
01:06:51 [INAUDIBLE]
01:06:55 [INAUDIBLE]
01:06:58 [INAUDIBLE]
01:07:11 [INAUDIBLE]
01:07:19 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:07:22 [APPLAUSE]
01:07:32 Thank you, service members and veterans.
01:07:39 Merry Christmas, and God bless you all.
01:07:43 [APPLAUSE]
01:07:47 [INAUDIBLE]
01:07:50 Thank you.
01:07:53 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:07:56 [INAUDIBLE]
01:07:59 I don't know.
01:08:00 Oh, here we go.
01:08:01 Oh, here we go.
01:08:02 OK, well, this is mine.
01:08:04 This is mine.
01:08:05 Yes, thank you.
01:08:06 Merry Christmas, friends.
01:08:07 Here's to our first double date together.
01:08:09 Yes, and your first date ever, right?
01:08:12 Yeah, I'm excited.
01:08:14 What is that?
01:08:17 This is a Blitzen special.
01:08:19 It's Blitz with a little bit of everything.
01:08:21 Of course you ordered that.
01:08:23 I did promise him a treat last night.
01:08:26 You promised me two treats, and I have witnesses, so.
01:08:30 I'm so sorry, guys.
01:08:31 I have to take this.
01:08:32 Yeah, yeah.
01:08:35 So what are you guys doing tomorrow for Christmas Eve?
01:08:37 Well, since neither of us have family in the area--
01:08:41 And neither of us could get away for Christmas.
01:08:43 We thought we'd just--
01:08:45 Hang out together.
01:08:46 Oh, that would be so nice.
01:08:47 Yeah.
01:08:48 Daniel's coming over to my parents' house tomorrow.
01:08:50 Right, with his parents stationed overseas,
01:08:52 he doesn't get to see them at Christmas often,
01:08:53 so that's really nice.
01:08:54 Yeah.
01:08:55 OK.
01:08:57 Yeah.
01:08:58 He looks a little stressed.
01:08:59 I got it, I got it.
01:09:01 Nah, he doesn't get stressed.
01:09:02 OK.
01:09:03 Sorry about that, gang.
01:09:11 It's OK.
01:09:12 Is everything OK?
01:09:13 Yeah, yeah.
01:09:14 Yeah, everything's fine.
01:09:15 Should we order some food, or--
01:09:16 Yes, yes.
01:09:17 I am starving.
01:09:18 You're always starving.
01:09:19 What else is new?
01:09:20 I wonder why Ray wanted to see us in person.
01:09:32 Yeah, he just said it was important when he called.
01:09:35 But that wasn't the call you got at the diner.
01:09:37 No, no.
01:09:38 That was-- hey, Ray.
01:09:40 Hey, you two.
01:09:41 Thanks for coming.
01:09:42 No, it's you I should be thanking for all of your help.
01:09:45 Can I hug you?
01:09:46 Of course you can.
01:09:47 That would make my day.
01:09:49 Now, I have something to tell you and something to ask you.
01:09:53 Here, have a seat.
01:09:54 I'm still reeling from what Ray just told us.
01:10:06 I know, right?
01:10:08 And I would have thought it had to do with the call you got
01:10:11 at the diner, but it wasn't, was it?
01:10:14 No, it wasn't.
01:10:16 And from the look on your face, things clearly aren't all good.
01:10:20 So what's going on?
01:10:22 That call was from my commander.
01:10:24 I'm getting transferred in March.
01:10:28 Oh, I see.
01:10:30 Yeah, I didn't know.
01:10:31 I had no idea, Nicole.
01:10:32 It's military life, right?
01:10:36 Yeah.
01:10:38 Yeah, then you have to go.
01:10:39 What about--
01:10:40 No, Daniel, you have to go.
01:10:41 Yeah.
01:10:47 Are you OK with that?
01:10:48 OK.
01:10:54 I don't have to come to your parents tomorrow if it's--
01:10:57 Of course you do.
01:11:00 It's Christmas.
01:11:02 [music playing]
01:11:04 I think the taste of homemade cranberry sauce
01:11:18 is so much better, don't you?
01:11:21 I don't know.
01:11:22 I used to love the canned stuff.
01:11:24 Grandma used to let me use the cookie cutters
01:11:27 and make Christmas shapes.
01:11:29 She did do that, didn't she?
01:11:31 Mm-hmm.
01:11:33 OK.
01:11:34 What's wrong?
01:11:36 Nothing's wrong.
01:11:37 Nicole, I've known you your whole life,
01:11:39 and something is wrong.
01:11:40 And I have been waiting ever since you came in earlier
01:11:42 today with Daniel, both wearing that hang dog expression,
01:11:46 for you to tell me what it is.
01:11:47 I don't want it to ruin the surprise.
01:11:49 Yes, I know.
01:11:50 You and Daniel have a surprise for me.
01:11:52 And as I told you, I don't need anything.
01:11:55 No, it's not really a thing.
01:11:57 And you're not really answering my question.
01:12:01 Honey, come on.
01:12:02 Talk to me.
01:12:03 It's Daniel, isn't it?
01:12:08 He's leaving, Mom.
01:12:16 They're transferring him in March.
01:12:18 He just found out yesterday.
01:12:20 Oh, no.
01:12:21 Oh, honey.
01:12:23 I am so sorry.
01:12:25 But, sweetie, that doesn't mean that that's the end of the story.
01:12:29 Yes, it does.
01:12:31 It's military life.
01:12:33 He said so himself, and he's right.
01:12:35 He's been moving around his whole life serving other people.
01:12:38 And maybe people like him, people like me, we don't--
01:12:43 we don't get to have anyone else.
01:12:45 I don't believe that.
01:12:46 Maybe the duty and the transience,
01:12:47 it just makes it impossible.
01:12:49 I don't believe that at all.
01:12:53 I do not want this to ruin Christmas, OK?
01:12:56 Because we really do have a wonderful surprise for you.
01:13:00 And I'm sure Daniel and I will stay good friends.
01:13:05 Well, then we will just talk about this at another time.
01:13:08 Oh, darn.
01:13:20 I'm out of butter.
01:13:21 And I remembered last night, and yet I didn't get out to go and get some more.
01:13:26 And I'm just in the middle of all of this.
01:13:28 Honey, please, would you mind going to get me some?
01:13:30 Oh, yeah.
01:13:31 I came with Daniel--
01:13:32 No, no, no, no, no.
01:13:33 You just take my car.
01:13:34 You know where the keys are.
01:13:35 I mean, look, Daniel and your dad are out there.
01:13:38 They're talking about sports.
01:13:39 I say we just let them--
01:13:40 Mom, what are you--
01:13:41 I really want the butter.
01:13:42 OK.
01:13:45 Thanks, honey.
01:13:49 Thanks, honey.
01:13:50 Thanks for helping, Daniel.
01:13:55 My pleasure.
01:13:56 I do have to warn you, I'm not much of a cook, so--
01:13:59 Well, you just keep chopping.
01:14:00 You're doing such a good job.
01:14:02 Thank you, chef.
01:14:04 Hey, did Nicole ever tell you how this house got built?
01:14:08 No, but I know she grew up here, right?
01:14:11 Yeah, but originally it was my mother's.
01:14:14 My father had promised her when they got married that he would build her a house.
01:14:19 And while it didn't turn out the way he had intended, he was still true to his word.
01:14:24 Well, it is very nice.
01:14:26 It's beautiful.
01:14:27 It is, isn't it?
01:14:28 Tell you what I really miss about my mother are her eyes.
01:14:33 The way that they would just sparkle when she would talk about my father.
01:14:37 Love at first sight, she would always say.
01:14:42 Not everyone gets to experience that kind of love, but everyone deserves it.
01:14:46 Love is powerful in all of its forms.
01:14:49 I mean, the love that I share with Ted just continues to grow, even at this age.
01:14:55 That's a beautiful thing.
01:14:57 Yes, it is, isn't it?
01:14:59 Um, I'm guessing Nicole told you.
01:15:08 Yes, she did.
01:15:11 Okay.
01:15:12 I know I have this reputation of being a matchmaker, but I promise you I'm not going to interfere.
01:15:18 I appreciate that.
01:15:20 But I am going to tell you that my daughter has waited her whole life for you.
01:15:27 And I think the same is true for you with her.
01:15:31 Some people who share this kind of love, like my mother and father, only have a short time together.
01:15:38 Sometimes love requires sacrifices, but those sacrifices are always worth it.
01:15:44 As sad as it is that my mom lost my dad, she wouldn't trade the time she had with him for anything in the world.
01:15:54 Thank you for that, Fran.
01:16:03 It's, uh, it's easy to see why your daughter is such a remarkable woman.
01:16:08 Ciao.
01:16:12 Ciao.
01:16:13 Okay.
01:16:14 Yes, chef.
01:16:32 Well, after my false butter run, dad is now helping mom finish up in the kitchen.
01:16:36 Oh, well I'm sure that makes sense somewhere.
01:16:39 Ah, you've been around us long enough to know.
01:16:41 That's, that's true.
01:16:43 Daniel, I want you to know that I really do understand.
01:16:48 I don't want you to be worried that your transfer is upsetting me. I'm gonna be-
01:16:52 No, don't say it.
01:16:53 And I'm not worried.
01:16:56 Well, you could be a little worried.
01:16:59 Nope, I'm not.
01:17:01 Okay.
01:17:02 No, Nicole, I'm not worried because I'm not going.
01:17:04 What?
01:17:05 I'm not taking the transfer.
01:17:07 No, you have to go.
01:17:09 Yeah, so you told me yesterday, but I've been thinking about that pretty much nonstop since and I realized something.
01:17:15 You're wrong, doctor.
01:17:17 I'm wrong?
01:17:18 Yeah, it might be a first, I'm not sure, but you are absolutely wrong about this.
01:17:22 I'm not going.
01:17:24 But how?
01:17:25 Oh, did my mother talk you into this?
01:17:28 No, the only thing your mother did was make me realize something that I already knew.
01:17:31 Nicole, I have been searching for you my entire life.
01:17:37 I knew at the moment you walked into that exam room, you forgot your name.
01:17:41 I didn't forget my name.
01:17:44 Okay, I kind of did.
01:17:47 Well, it was the smock you were wearing.
01:17:49 No, it wasn't.
01:17:50 No, it wasn't.
01:17:51 So what are we gonna do?
01:17:56 How do we solve this military life?
01:17:58 Well, I've actually been thinking for a while now about switching from active duty to the army reserves anyway, so.
01:18:03 Oh, Daniel, no, I don't want you making any big decisions like that because of me.
01:18:06 It'll give me more flexibility, free me up to stay here, continue the work I'm doing with A Hand for Warriors,
01:18:11 work that's been taking up a lot more of my time, as it should.
01:18:14 I already called my commanding officer and told him.
01:18:17 He was totally supportive.
01:18:19 You did?
01:18:21 I did.
01:18:24 And there's no question that a big reason why I did was because of you.
01:18:29 We deserve a chance.
01:18:32 Yeah, we do.
01:18:37 And you know, the JBLM reserves, they're actually looking for a brilliant but stubborn orthopedic surgeon.
01:18:45 I don't know if you know anyone.
01:18:47 Are you romancing me or recruiting me, Major?
01:18:52 I think there's only one way to answer that.
01:18:54 That dinner was delicious, Franny. Another triumph.
01:19:13 I won't be able to eat again for at least another hour.
01:19:17 I am so happy about Nicole and Daniel. I mean, I know it's the beginning of their journey, but I just, I have a very good feeling about this.
01:19:26 Well, this one time, Madame Matchmaker, I have to agree with you.
01:19:31 Mom, Dad, would you come in here?
01:19:38 I'd like you to meet Christian Murray and his son, Joseph.
01:19:44 Pleasure to meet you.
01:19:46 It's a pleasure to meet you, ma'am. And Chris is just fine.
01:19:52 Oh my. So this is the surprise.
01:19:56 Well, now, it's not all of it. It's...
01:19:59 We're hoping you'll take a ride with all of us. We have something to show you.
01:20:04 Well, you've come all this way and on Christmas Eve. Of course, Ed.
01:20:10 I'll get our coats.
01:20:11 [Music]
01:20:30 I can't imagine what it could be.
01:20:32 [Music]
01:20:57 Ma'am, I know by now you've heard the story of how your father saved my life.
01:21:04 Corporal John T. Medlin. He was a hero then. He's a hero now. And he will be a hero forever.
01:21:16 Thank you.
01:21:18 [Applause]
01:21:23 All of these folks are generations of our family.
01:21:27 We're here to honor your father and your family because without him, none of us would be here.
01:21:33 So we want to say thank you and Merry Christmas.
01:21:39 Merry Christmas.
01:21:41 [Applause]
01:21:47 I don't even know what to say. I'm just completely overwhelmed.
01:21:52 So Fran, you should know that when Chris and Joseph here heard that we needed additional funding to buy this land and build our new residential facility,
01:21:59 they very graciously and generously contributed what we needed.
01:22:04 To honor your father.
01:22:07 And your mother.
01:22:09 [Music]
01:22:16 [Applause]
01:22:24 Fran, would you care to do the honors?
01:22:26 Yes, Ted.
01:22:29 Okay.
01:22:30 [Music]
01:22:34 Thank you.
01:22:35 [Music]
01:22:38 Okay.
01:22:39 Yeah.
01:22:40 [Music]
01:22:43 [Applause]
01:22:49 So, Mom, what do you think?
01:22:51 I just, I think it would have been so nice if Mom could have been here to see all of this.
01:22:58 I know, but I think she is. And Grandpa, too. And I think they're up there celebrating together all the Christmases that they miss.
01:23:08 Because for them, it's...
01:23:11 It's Christmas forever.
01:23:14 [Music]
01:23:37 [Music]
01:24:05 you
01:24:07 [BLANK_AUDIO]
