00:07 All right, well, good way to start the Big Ten season up again.
00:12 I'm really happy with the way we came out and executed.
00:15 I thought our team was really focused.
00:17 They knew the scout really well.
00:19 I thought we took advantage of some things that we really were trying to stress with
00:24 our team.
00:24 And, you know, Hannah goes nine for ten, runs the floor beautifully,
00:29 has eight rebounds.
00:30 Kaitlyn becomes the Big Ten's best assist passer ever.
00:36 I mean, that's just incredible stuff.
00:38 But, you know, I think also it's things like Gabby Marshall,
00:41 who doesn't score a point, has the highest plus minus of anybody on this team.
00:45 She has four assists, she has a steal, and she holds Mar Brown to really tough
00:50 numbers, four for 16, and she's a very good player.
00:53 So Gabby's defense was spectacular today, and happy with the way that we came out
00:59 and played this game, except for the free throw line.
01:01 There's always improvement there.
01:02 We didn't do very well from the free throw line and a few too many turnovers,
01:04 but 23 assists, great numbers.
01:08 - Just talk about the thought process that you guys had for guarding Mar Brown.
01:11 You mentioned Gabby did a really good job.
01:12 Just kind of, well, maybe not the game plan, because you have to play him again,
01:15 I guess, but just kind of your thoughts on what you guys did, I guess.
01:18 - I just think that she...
01:20 I think Gabby just did a great job of trying to keep the ball out of her hands.
01:23 And when she did get it, I mean, it was like a rush shot, you know,
01:26 there was no space in between her.
01:28 And I just think she made it really hard on her all night long.
01:32 - Either of the players, you'd certainly be forgiven if you'd have come out sluggish
01:35 tonight, nine days, 10 days off maybe.
01:38 You didn't, you got on right away.
01:40 Just tell us about that.
01:42 - Yeah, I think it's easy kind of to get up for a game right after Christmas,
01:45 especially when we have a crowd like we did today, a truly like sold-out crowd
01:49 that was very into it, was loud.
01:52 You know, just a really fun environment for us to play in.
01:55 And I think, you know, the break was good for everybody on our team to, you know,
01:57 reset over the holidays.
01:59 But also we came back and, you know, we knew there was a lot of things that we
02:01 could get better at.
02:02 And, you know, we've been competing with each other over the past few days,
02:05 playing hard, playing live a lot.
02:07 And, you know, we had an opportunity to get better.
02:09 And I think that was the best thing.
02:10 And Coach Buter, I mean, we took this team very seriously.
02:13 They're really good.
02:13 They're a young team, but they're really good.
02:16 And like Coach said, I thought Gabby's defense was tremendous.
02:19 But I think, honestly, the start to the game, getting up nine or 10,
02:22 whatever it was, was huge for us.
02:24 And really, they kind of struggled to fight back from that point.
02:28 Hannah, talk about nine or 10 from the floor.
02:30 Just talk about the looks that you were able to get today.
02:36 I know Kaitlin finds me a lot.
02:38 She's a great passer.
02:40 Just like the rest of the girls on the team, they do a great job getting me the
02:43 ball.
02:44 I had a little mismatch against number 52.
02:47 I'm a little quicker than she is.
02:49 So getting the ball on the floor was important, too.
02:52 Talk about that pass that Kaitlin got, yeah?
02:54 I think it was in the third quarter.
02:56 Did you even think that she could get to you on that one?
02:58 Oh, yeah.
02:59 She can do anything.
03:01 She can do anything.
03:02 Thanks, Hannah.
03:03 Until the ball got there.
03:05 I saw it coming.
03:06 She was going to get open.
03:07 Yeah.
03:08 She's fast.
03:10 Kaitlin, on that pass, it kind of seemed like you were a quarterback leading a
03:13 receiver, except you did it with a bounce pass.
03:16 Yeah, I think – I don't know.
03:17 I mean, transition offense is where I'm at my best.
03:20 We get to win our teams at our best.
03:22 And Hannah runs the floor so well.
03:24 And I could kind of see she had kind of a step on her girl.
03:27 Maybe was kind of right next to her for a second, but I had a lot of faith that
03:30 Hannah would kick it into gear if I threw it down there for her.
03:34 And it wasn't really a – it was kind of a tough pass to handle.
03:37 You know, Hannah had to go down, collect it, and go up and finish with a defender
03:40 right next to her.
03:40 So credit to her.
03:42 But, you know, Hannah just runs the floor really hard, as hard as anybody I've
03:45 ever played with.
03:46 And it leads to a lot of easy buckets and causes a lot of problems for other
03:50 teams.
03:51 Where do you keep all your commemorative balls?
03:53 Because I'm sure you're going to get another one for the assist thing.
03:56 I have a couple storage units back home.
03:58 My parents put stuff in.
04:00 But, like, my 3,000-point ball has just been sitting in our locker room.
04:04 Sometimes it gets lost in my locker, I don't know, until I clean it out or make
04:07 one of my teammates clean my locker.
04:09 They get so annoyed, they offer to clean it for me.
04:11 It needs to be cleaned.
04:13 So I think by halftime, Katelyn broke the Iowa program assist record.
04:18 And in the second half, she broke the Big Ten.
04:20 Do you kind of get numb to it as a coach, about all the records getting broken?
04:26 No, I relish in it.
04:29 It's just so much fun.
04:30 I want her to get double-doubles.
04:32 I want her to break records.
04:34 To me, it's so much fun to watch her do that.
04:37 I never get tired of her passing.
04:39 I go to practice every day.
04:41 Do you get tired of my shooting, though?
04:43 No.
04:44 Sometimes.
04:45 [Laughter]
04:48 She knows that's not true.
04:49 I love watching her in practice even.
04:51 It's just a blast.
04:52 You guys were able to get out in transition more than a lot of recent games.
04:56 What was going on there?
04:58 Why was that so available?
05:01 Yeah, I thought, honestly, our defense was good,
05:04 so that leads to a lot of easy stuff in transition.
05:07 I thought Hannah ran the floor really hard.
05:09 I thought our fours and fives did a really good job taking the ball out very
05:12 quickly and getting it to the side we want to get it to.
05:15 It makes life a little easier when we're not getting pressured up the floor.
05:19 Loyola kind of played a press on us a little bit.
05:22 It kind of slowed down our transition offense a little bit.
05:24 But we were able to outlet the ball really fast and get it up the court.
05:28 When our fours and fives run really hard to the block,
05:30 that attracts a lot of attention and gets people on the perimeter open, too.
05:34 Coach, can you talk about Hannah and Kate kind of breaking out in second
05:37 and third scorers for the offense and how important that is?
05:40 Oh, we have to have that.
05:41 I mean, you can't do what we want to accomplish with just Caitlin scoring.
05:46 It has to be more than that.
05:48 And yes, tonight, Kate and Hannah both did well.
05:51 But I honestly believe it can be anybody.
05:54 I think there's other people that can absolutely contribute offensively.
05:58 And I think Sid is definitely somebody that can.
06:02 I know Gabby can make shots.
06:03 I know she's never going to be like a 12-point-a-game type of player,
06:06 but she can make shots and make people have to guard her.
06:09 The threes that we took were good.
06:11 So did the young, talented team, probably going to be good going forward.
06:14 This was just their second road game, I believe, this season.
06:16 Just how important was it to get out early and get a lead
06:19 and kind of just put them behind?
06:20 Well, and like Caitlin said, the crowd was amazing.
06:23 I mean, I came out, and I didn't know what to expect with the bowl game
06:26 and people traveling to the bowl.
06:28 I wasn't sure what to expect, but wow, it was such a great crowd.
06:31 And I mean, if you can't be motivated to play on your home court
06:34 and it's a Big Ten opener in front of that crowd, you know, it's pretty special.
06:40 Kayla, who taught you how to pass?
06:45 My dad, I guess.
06:46 I don't know.
06:47 I feel like as a young kid, like that was always what I did.
06:49 Like I've always kind of passed the ball like that.
06:51 I think it just kind of comes with the vision.
06:53 Like as a point guard, you have to have really good vision.
06:55 But I think it just comes with playing the game more than anything.
06:58 It's not really – I don't go into the gym
07:00 and just like chuck passes against the wall.
07:03 I don't do that.
07:04 You get that from playing basketball.
07:06 Like that's how you learn.
07:07 You read angles.
07:08 I think soccer helped me a lot in reading angles and understanding angles.
07:12 I think that's just the biggest thing.
07:13 And then anticipation, a lot of the stuff in transition.
07:15 Like I'm just putting the ball kind of where I think they're going to end up
07:19 and be in transition.
07:20 So I think it's kind of all that combined.
07:22 Hannah, you guys seemed really loose pre-game, start of the game.
07:27 I think just before the tip you started smiling.
07:30 I don't know if you saw yourself on the Jumbotron.
07:33 Kate started laughing.
07:35 Kate waved at the Jumbotron.
07:36 I mean, is that just – is it just kind of a relief getting back on the floor?
07:41 Or what was all that?
07:43 Well, cameras make me nervous.
07:44 No, I'm just kidding.
07:47 I think we prepared really well for this game.
07:49 So we were just ready to be back out on the court
07:51 and show everybody in the Big Ten what we're about.
07:55 Minnesota missed a ton of shots, especially in the post.
08:00 Was it just not their day?
08:02 Or what was going on in the post in particular
08:05 that you kept Sophie from just piling up points?
08:09 Well, she shot the ball pretty well, though.
08:10 She ended up being six for 11.
08:11 So she's a handful down there, you know.
08:14 And I think us getting her in foul trouble helped a little bit.
08:18 Hannah, you led the way with eight rebounds.
08:20 Could you describe how big of a factor rebounding was today?
08:25 I think it's really important, especially defensive rebounding,
08:28 their offensive rebounds is really important.
08:30 So they don't get second chance points as much.
08:34 So yeah.
08:35 Kaitlin, how mindful are you coming into a game
08:38 that you could break a record?
08:41 Honestly, I didn't really know.
08:44 I don't know.
08:45 I'm not really that aware of those type of things.
08:48 Yeah, I think I just was excited to come out and play.
08:51 Kind of had to sit for over a week of not playing basketball.
08:54 So I thought our team was really loose and just excited to play.
08:58 And I would agree with Hannah.
08:59 I thought we prepped really good for this game.
09:01 I thought our scouting report was really good.
09:03 Changed a few things up on the defensive end
09:05 that maybe we don't usually do.
09:06 And we executed really well tonight.
09:08 And sometimes that almost can make you lock in a little bit more.
09:11 And then when we get stops on defense,
09:13 our transition offense causes a lot of problems.
09:15 So I think that's the key for us.
09:17 But yeah, I don't really come into games
09:20 worrying about that type of stuff.
09:21 I knew when they announced it after the third quarter.
09:24 And then you went to the Chiefs game too, huh?
09:26 I did.
09:26 What was the best part about that?
09:28 It was fun.
09:28 I mean, I think the best part about it
09:30 was that I got to spend Christmas with my family,
09:32 like all my cousins, my aunts, uncles.
09:34 And just getting to do something fun outside of basketball
09:36 is not something we always get to do,
09:38 because we're so locked in during the season.
09:40 So that was a lot of fun for me.
09:41 The Chiefs couldn't win, which was the only sad part
09:43 about the day, but it's all right.
09:45 Did you get to meet Taylor Swift?
09:47 I didn't.
09:47 She was a couple of sweeps away from me, but I did not meet her.
09:50 She's a couple tiers above my level.
09:52 So--
09:53 [LAUGHTER]
09:56 Coach, just really quick, Michigan State Tuesday.
10:00 Just any preliminary--
10:01 I haven't even watched them play once yet.
10:04 So I'll start working on them right now.
10:07 New coach, so I'm sure it's a different system.
10:11 I know they're pressing a little bit.
10:12 I know that they've done well, but I don't know anything
10:16 besides they've done well.
10:19 That's all I know.
10:20 And they press.
10:21 Sorry.
10:21 And they press.
10:22 I didn't know that.
10:23 That's it.
10:23 That's all I know.
10:24 Sorry.
