00:02 - Hi y'all, it's the fashion team over here at Essence.
00:16 I'm Devyn Blackshear, the senior fashion editor,
00:18 and I'm joined by my lovely ladies.
00:21 - Hi, I'm Erin, fashion news writer.
00:23 - Hi, I'm Robin Mowat.
00:24 I'm a contributing fashion editor here at Essence.
00:27 So today we're gonna dive into the slay moments of 2023.
00:32 We're gonna go through the best red carpet looks,
00:34 best street style,
00:36 talk a little bit about the tunnel walk looks,
00:39 and dive into some trends we saw this year.
00:42 Let's start off with best red carpet looks.
00:46 Robin, I know you have a lot to say about this.
00:49 Who had some of the iconic red carpet looks this year?
00:55 - I think this year I definitely wanna make sure
00:57 Taraji P. Henson gets her flowers.
00:59 She really killed every red carpet she touched this year.
01:03 I loved especially some of the things
01:05 that she wore in London.
01:06 She wore this fire LaPointe dress that was bright pink.
01:10 I also was really captivated by what she wore
01:12 to the world premiere,
01:14 which was styled by Wayman and Micah.
01:16 I think she just really has this air of confidence
01:20 that really stood out for her entire press run
01:22 for the color purple this year.
01:23 - Who else do you think made an impact
01:26 on the red carpet this year?
01:28 - I definitely think that Jodi Turner-Smith
01:30 also really did an excellent job.
01:33 Whatever carpet she showed up for,
01:35 the Academy Gala that was actually a week or so ago,
01:39 she had this incredible Christopher John Rogers dress on
01:42 that had this huge oversized skirt and this bustier moment.
01:46 I think that's just,
01:48 it kind of evokes old Hollywood glamor a bit,
01:51 but I think that she's just great.
01:54 Her skin is always glowing too,
01:55 so I think that also helped,
01:56 but definitely Jodi Turner.
01:58 - I wanna add to the women.
02:02 Fantasia also did a great job.
02:05 I don't know if you have a favorite look
02:07 from any of her red carpet premieres.
02:10 - Yeah, no.
02:12 I would go back to the world premiere of the color purple.
02:15 She had this incredible Sergio Hudson outfit on.
02:18 I'm trying to figure out
02:20 if it was a dress or if it was a top and skirt situation,
02:23 but I think it was a top and skirt situation.
02:25 It was giving 20s Hollywood glam.
02:28 - So we talked about the women.
02:29 Let's talk about the men, our lovely, lovely men.
02:32 Peacocking is real,
02:35 and there's two men, in my opinion,
02:37 that really came out strong this year on the red carpet.
02:40 One's Yaya, and then the other is Coleman Domingo.
02:44 Yaya Abdul-Mateen II,
02:48 he has an incredible stylist, Jan Michael Kwame.
02:53 She really made him stand out everywhere he went this year,
02:58 from the Tony Awards wearing Ferragamo
03:04 by Maximilian Davis,
03:06 or becoming a part of that Tom Brown family,
03:10 and rocking Tom Brown even at the Met last year.
03:14 I think that just shows how
03:18 iconic he is in the fashion style world
03:23 for Black men that are actors going to these events,
03:28 along with Coleman Domingo,
03:29 who has had a great time in his career this year.
03:34 He brings a lot of grace to the red carpet.
03:39 Karen, who was your favorite street style look?
03:44 - For men's, I would say Lewis Hamilton.
03:46 I think he is so cool.
03:49 I feel like Black men especially don't get the space
03:52 to be as creative sometimes with the things that they wear,
03:55 and especially him being in such a masculine sport, F1,
04:00 and that kind of taking off
04:02 and having its own fashion moment.
04:03 Like, A$AP Rocky's in that F1 sphere now, too, at Lipuma.
04:08 - You mentioned A$AP Rocky.
04:10 I'm wondering if your best street style look
04:14 is A$AP Rocky's woman, our woman,
04:17 the queen of street style.
04:20 - Exactly. She really is.
04:22 She is my eternal it girl, Rihanna, obviously.
04:26 The woman has redefined pregnancy fashion.
04:30 Everyone is wearing their belly out, everybody,
04:34 and it's okay.
04:35 It's never been a problem,
04:36 and it's not like she invented having your belly out,
04:38 but she's made it to where being sexy and pregnant is cool.
04:42 I think transitioning to women
04:46 in the tunnel walk category,
04:48 I think Diamond DeShield,
04:50 who plays for the Dallas Wings, I believe,
04:52 I think her style is insane.
04:55 I love that she's just really swaggy with it.
04:58 Like the cargo pants with the sneakers,
05:01 but she also has some feminine elements,
05:03 like her tops tend to be tighter.
05:05 Or if she's wearing a baggy top,
05:06 she's wearing a tighter bottom.
05:08 And then the jewelry she's wearing is just cohesive.
05:11 I love her personal style because she knows herself.
05:14 Like I can tell she styles herself.
05:16 - All right, so that wraps fashion for 2023.
05:20 We can't wait to see what the celebrities do
05:23 for red carpet, street style, tunnel walks in 2024.
05:28 We want to thank you for joining us
05:31 and happy holidays from the Essence Fashion Team.
