00:26 in the corporate world.
00:28 She has been recognized by numerous awards and accolades.
00:33 Welcome to the Rich Rabbit and today we'll be talking about the life journey of Meg Whitman.
00:39 Meg Whitman was born on August 4, 1956 in Cold Spring Harbor, New York to Margaret Cushing
00:45 and Hendricks Hallett Whitman Jr.
00:50 Her father was a successful investment banker and her mother was a homemaker.
00:56 Meg was the youngest of three children and grew up in a privileged environment in Long
01:00 Island, where she attended Cold Spring Harbor High School.
01:06 Meg's childhood was marked by academic excellence and a strong work ethic.
01:11 She was an outstanding student and excelled in math and science.
01:16 In high school, she was a member of the National Honor Society and played on the school's tennis
01:21 team.
01:23 Meg also developed an early interest in business and economics, which would later become her
01:28 lifelong passion.
01:30 After graduating from high school, Meg attended Princeton University, where she studied economics.
01:37 She was an active member of the campus community, participating in a variety of extracurricular
01:43 activities, including the university's sailing team.
01:48 Meg also worked part-time jobs to help support herself, including waiting tables and working
01:54 as a campus tour guide.
01:56 In 1981, Meg decided to pursue an MBA at Harvard Business School.
02:02 She graduated two years later and accepted a job at Bain & Company, a management consulting
02:07 firm.
02:09 Meg quickly rose to the ranks at Bain, becoming a partner in just four years.
02:15 Her success at Bain led her to recruitment by the Walt Disney Company in 1989, where
02:20 she served as vice president of strategic planning.
02:25 Meg's time at Disney was short-lived, however.
02:27 In 1992, she was recruited by the consumer goods giant Hasbro to serve as the company's
02:33 president and CEO.
02:37 Meg's tenure at Hasbro was marked by a series of successful product launches and strategic
02:42 acquisitions, which helped to position the company as a leader in the toy and game industry.
02:49 In 1998, Meg joined the fledgling online auction site eBay as its president and CEO.
02:56 At the time, eBay had just 30 employees and was generating only $4.7 million in revenue.
03:05 Under Meg's leadership, however, eBay grew rapidly, expanding its user base and diversifying
03:11 its product offerings.
03:13 By the time Meg stepped down as CEO in 2008, eBay had over 15,000 employees and was generating
03:21 over $8 billion in revenue.
03:26 Meg's success at eBay made her one of the most prominent and respected business leaders
03:31 in the world.
03:32 In 2010, she ran for governor of California as the Republican candidate, but was ultimately
03:38 defeated by Jerry Brown.
03:40 After her unsuccessful bid for governor, Meg returned to the business world, serving as
03:45 CEO of Hewlett Packard from 2011 to 2015.
03:51 A year later, in 2012, Whitman announced that HP would write down $8.8 billion of the value
03:57 of Autonomy, the British software company it had purchased the previous year.
04:03 The announcement eventually led to a civil case in the UK in 2019, at which Whitman testified
04:09 to having not carried out proper calculations of the write-down.
04:15 At the time, HP was facing a number of challenges, including declining revenue and profits and
04:21 an outdated product line.
04:24 Meg's primary goal as CEO was to turn around the struggling company and restore its reputation
04:30 as a leader in the tech industry.
04:33 To achieve this goal, Meg embarked on a series of strategic initiatives, including a major
04:39 restructuring of the company's operations and a renewed focus on innovation and growth.
04:46 She also oversaw a number of major acquisitions, including the purchase of Autonomy, a software
04:51 company, and the merger with Compaq.
04:54 Under Meg's leadership, HP's financial performance improved significantly.
05:01 The company's revenue and profits grew and its stock price rose by more than 50%.
05:08 Despite her many achievements at HP, Meg's tenure as CEO was not without controversy.
05:15 She faced criticism over the company's handling of the Autonomy acquisition and was also criticized
05:21 for the company's decision to exit the tablet and smartphone markets.
05:25 Overall, Meg's work at Hewlett Packard demonstrated her ability to lead a large, complex organization
05:32 through a period of change and uncertainty.
05:36 Her strategic vision and focus on innovation helped to position HP for long-term success,
05:42 and her commitment to diversity and inclusion set an important example for the tech industry
05:47 as a whole.
05:51 In 2018, Meg Whitman was named CEO of Quibi, a mobile-first streaming platform that aimed
05:57 to revolutionize the way people consume short-form video content.
06:03 The platform, which was founded by Jeffrey Katzenberg, raised over $1.7 billion in funding
06:09 and was highly anticipated in the media and entertainment industries.
06:14 Under Meg's leadership, Quibi launched in April 2020, just as the COVID-19 pandemic
06:19 was beginning to take hold.
06:23 Despite the challenging timing of its launch, Quibi attracted a lot of attention and was
06:28 praised for its innovative technology and high-quality content.
06:32 However, Quibi ultimately struggled to gain traction with consumers, who were reluctant
06:38 to pay for yet another streaming service, especially one that was focused on short-form
06:43 content.
06:45 In October 2020, just six months after its launch, Quibi announced that it was shutting
06:50 down.
06:53 Despite the disappointing outcome, Meg's work at Quibi demonstrated her willingness
06:57 to take risks and her ability to navigate a rapidly evolving industry.
07:04 Her experience in tech and media helped to position Quibi as a serious player in the
07:09 streaming space, and her leadership helped to attract top talent and investors to the
07:14 platform.
07:15 Throughout her career, Meg Whitman has been committed to giving back to the community
07:20 through philanthropy.
07:21 She has supported a wide range of causes, including education, the environment, and
07:26 health care.
07:29 In 2006, she founded the Whitman Heart Foundation, which provides funding for organizations that
07:35 focus on education and youth development.
07:39 She has also served on the boards of numerous non-profit organizations, including Teach
07:44 for America and the Howard Business School Board of Deans Advisors.
07:49 In addition to her financial contributions, Meg has been a strong advocate for corporate
07:54 social responsibility, and has encouraged businesses to use their resources to make
08:00 a positive impact in the world.
08:03 In December 2021, Whitman was nominated by President Joe Biden to serve as the United
08:08 States Ambassador to Kenya.
08:12 She has been an example of women empowerment and sheer hard work topped with undeterring
08:17 commitment.
