00:55 Shapovalov was born on April 15, 1999, to parents Tessa Shapovalova and Viktor Shapovalov,
01:03 who were both Russian-Israeli citizens.
01:07 His mother Tessa was born in Ukraine and played tennis for the Soviet national tennis team.
01:14 She later migrated to Israel with Viktor, during the collapse of the Soviet Union, before
01:20 immigrating to Canada.
01:22 Denis was raised in Vaughan, Ontario, by his parents.
01:26 He also has an older brother, Evgeny Shapovalov, who was born in June 1996.
01:32 Though not much information is known about his brother, Denis has shared many pictures
01:37 of his older sibling on his Instagram account.
01:40 Denis' mother worked as a tennis coach at the Richmond Hill Country Club, where he started
01:46 playing tennis at five and quickly became obsessed with the sport.
01:52 His mother Tessa soon resigned from her job and opened her own tennis academy in Vaughan
01:58 and named it Tessa Tennis.
02:00 This was done mainly to help him with the training and give him a home base, while also
02:05 teaching the game to other juniors.
02:09 The young talent went on to attend Stephen Lewis Secondary School in Vaughan.
02:15 Denis started playing tennis when he was just five years old.
02:19 By the time he was 13, his mother couldn't handle him on his own and had to hire Adriano
02:25 Fiorivia as his coach.
02:28 With Adriano's guidance, Shapovalov won numerous junior and ITF titles including the 2015 US
02:35 Open junior doubles title and the 2016 Wimbledon junior singles title.
02:41 The Canadian won his first junior title at the ITF G5 in October 2013 at Burlington,
02:48 Ontario and won his second title the following year in the same event.
02:54 That same year, he won the singles and doubles titles at the ITF G4 in San Jose.
03:01 He won his second Grand Slam at the US Open in September 2015 and the doubles title with
03:07 Felix "Ogre" Elysium.
03:10 A month later, Denis and his Canadian comrades Felix and Benjamin Sigoin clinched their first
03:16 junior Davis Cup title in Canada's history.
03:20 Denis was able to capture his first G1 singles title after winning in Roehampton.
03:27 A week later, he became the third Canadian to win a junior Grand Slam singles title with
03:33 a win over Alex de Meunier at the 2016 Wimbledon Championships.
03:38 Throughout his junior career, Shapovalov collected a total of 86 wins and 32 losses.
03:46 The Israeli-born Canadian achieved his first professional doubles title at the ITF Futures
03:52 in Pensacola in November 2015.
03:55 In 2016, the young talent reached the ITF Futures final in Sunrise, Florida.
04:02 He went on to clinch his first professional singles title after defeating Pedro Sakamoto
04:09 at the ITF Futures in Weston.
04:12 He also managed to reach the Challenger Bank National De Drummondville semifinals, where
04:18 he defeated his first top 100 player Austin Krychek before losing against British professional
04:25 Daniel Evans.
04:27 His loss at the semifinals pushed him to win his second and third titles at the ITF 25K
04:34 in Memphis and ITF 10K in Orange Park.
04:39 He defeated American professional Tennis Sangrin, ranked 286th in the world at the time.
04:47 The Wonder Kid from Canada defeated Australian professional Nick Kiryos to win his first
04:53 tour-level match.
04:55 However, Dennis lost the next round against Bulgarian professional Grigor Dimitrov who
05:00 was ranked at world number 40.
05:03 Since then, he has achieved a lot.
05:06 He has managed to reach the semis of Wimbledon in 2021 and also managed to reach the quarter-finals
05:13 of the US Open in 2020.
05:16 At the 2020 US Open, Chapavlov secured victories over Sebastian Korda, Kwon Sun Woo and Taylor
05:23 Fritz to reach the round of 16 for the first time since his Open debut in 2017.
05:31 He won against Belgian professional David Goffin in four sets, but lost to Spaniard
05:37 Pablo Carreno Basta in the quarter-finals.
05:40 Following his development and progress, Chapavlov reached his career high ranking by reaching
05:46 the top 10 for the first time.
05:49 The young lad is having the prime time of his career and has been decorated as one of
05:54 the best tennis players globally.
05:57 So far, he has won over $8 million throughout his career.
06:02 He has been endorsed by multinational companies like Nike, Yonex and BioSteel.
06:09 He also signed partnership deal with TAG Heuer in 2019.
06:14 Though Dennis is still young, we can be sure that the professional athlete will increase
06:19 his fortune in the near future.
06:22 Dennis has been sponsored by Nike for his clothing and by Yonex for his rackets.
06:28 Dennis currently uses the Yonex V-Core 95 with Yonex Poly Tour Pro and Wilson Natural
06:35 Gut Strings.
06:36 The professional sportsman has been using the lightweight racket for a long time and
06:41 doesn't seem to be switching to another in the near future.
06:46 He has also made some alterations to his racket by adding lead in the hoop and some silicon
06:52 in the handle increasing its weight.
06:55 The Canadian-Israeli sports personality Chapavlov is currently in a relationship with Miriam
07:01 Bjorklund, a Swedish professional tennis player.
07:05 The lovely couple has been dating since June 2019 and they have shared many pleasant moments.
07:12 Dennis loves to post pictures of his girlfriend Miriam and calls her his best friend.
07:20 The duo also trains together for their competitions to make the most of their time.
07:25 Though the pair has been publicly open about their relationship, the couple has not shared
07:30 any details about taking their relationship to the next level.
07:35 Dennis was also rumoured to have previously dated Penny Oleksiak, a Canadian professional
07:41 swimmer.
07:43 Penny was seen cheering for the tennis player while sitting next to his mother Tessa.
07:49 Dennis was coached by his mother Tessa for many years.
07:53 Following his performance and development in 2017, his mother added Rob Steckley to
07:58 his coaching team.
08:00 After the exit of coach Martin Lorando.
08:04 Steckley coached Dennis for two years before ending their connection in 2019.
08:10 The same month he was reunited with his junior coach Adriano Fiorivia and competed in the
08:16 ATP Cup 2020.
08:20 Tessa later added former Russian professional Mikhail Yuzhny who was ranked world number
08:25 eight in his career.
08:27 He became Chepavlo's shot selection coach depending on Dennis' weak point.
