02:02 Welcome back to The Perimeter, season 3, episode 9, sponsored by McGillivray Environmental.
02:07 Kind of some, I'm here with Brendan, the producer, but kind of some breaking news. It's kind of
02:12 ties into my podcast, obviously, The Perimeter.
02:17 Washington State and Oregon State, two local teams, obviously, definitely one,
02:21 joining the West Coast Conference in basketball.
02:24 Mm-hmm.
02:25 Kind of a,
02:26 not a shock, but it is kind of a shock in the sense that I thought it was be a Mountain West for them, for Hoops.
02:34 Since they joined for the affiliate scheduling they talked about for football, so he was like, "Well, they're just gonna join for basketball."
02:42 But it probably makes more sense travel-wise just to stay, you know, similar travel to the Pac-12, but it brings a local
02:49 component to it because there's a lot of
02:53 Cougar fans and Cougar alumni in this area.
02:55 Yeah.
02:56 Obviously are somewhat Zag fans too on the basketball side. I've heard that a lot from people. So, and then Oregon State,
03:03 you know, Coach Tinkle's kind of have some roots here. His daughter played for the women's team and
03:10 he coached at Montana when Gonzaga used to play Montana regularly. So, it's kind of
03:15 different. I think it's gonna bring, it brings
03:20 some
03:23 extra like clout to the West Coast Conference because they're bigger schools.
03:27 Mm-hmm.
03:27 Bigger universities. As far as basketball on the men's side, I think Kyle Smith's got that program going in the right direction.
03:36 Oregon State had an Elite Eight run a few years ago, hasn't been very good since, and I mean that with all due respect,
03:42 but just hasn't.
03:44 But they're two former Pac-12 schools. So, I think it's gonna help
03:47 you know, as far as our RPI and Kemp Palm and hopefully those programs continue to be good.
03:53 It
03:55 makes you wonder,
03:57 is that a play for the West Coast Conference to try to keep Gonzaga to stay in?
04:02 Mm-hmm.
04:03 Instead of going to the Big 12, if we're accepted, that's the big if.
04:06 Yeah.
04:07 So, yeah, there's a lot of kind of what-ifs and
04:11 what-haves-you's and money and stuff like that has
04:16 to be into play.
04:19 Now, I know this is a men's basketball podcast, but it's definitely gonna affect the women's side.
04:24 The
04:26 Lady Cougs won the Pac-12 last year.
04:28 Yeah.
04:29 They're a very good program.
04:31 So, you know, if you're Gonzaga or Portland, who've been the two best teams in the West Coast Conference on the girls side,
04:37 that's a big add.
04:39 You know, and creates great competition. That's a big add, too.
04:43 I don't know how good Oregon State is, but I'm sure they're decent as well.
04:47 Yeah.
04:48 On the women's side, you know what I'm saying?
04:49 So, like it affects both men's and women's. So, I think it's cool because now we get a Gonzaga,
04:56 Washington State, home and home, and people kind of
05:00 behind the scenes asked, "Why don't we ever play them home and home like we used to?" There was no
05:06 value for us to play them. And I know that hurts people's feelings, but it's one of those like, "Why would we play a team
05:15 that even if we win, it's not gonna help our Ken Palm out?"
05:19 But then they're a local chance, so then there's a little bit extra fervor on their side.
05:23 You know what I'm saying?
05:24 And people never take that into account.
05:26 And it bothers people because they're proud alums or they're, "Well, that stuff doesn't matter. There's formulas to
05:33 getting seedings and stuff like that."
05:36 Especially now in today's world. Like, I feel like back
05:39 almost maybe 10 plus years ago,
05:42 Gonzaga would typically play WSU, even Eastern.
05:46 But I think that was more because of proximity and
05:52 Gonzaga wasn't the program that they are today, right?
05:55 Yeah, it was more of a...
05:57 Well, it used to be home and home. Here's where it all started. We were home and home
06:03 with Montana the year before I got there.
06:08 This is going back for hardcore Zag fans, but we won, I think, an overtime at in Missoula.
06:16 We had to come back and storm back. That's when we had like, Turrioff, I think Dickow,
06:22 Stepp. Those were good teams. But I think Coach P was like, "Yep, we're never coming back here." You know what I mean?
06:28 And then
06:29 we used to do the Eastern in the arena and those got
06:33 testy where they got closer for comfort. Not in a bad way, but it got where like
06:38 we're playing these guys and we have more to lose than you do and you have nothing to lose and it got chippy.
06:46 And that's when Jackie Letty was there and then obviously he became on staff with Phewy.
06:52 So they were buddies. So that part of aspect got weird too because when you don't want to play your friends.
06:56 That's true.
06:56 You know what I'm saying? Because it gets chippy in a good or bad way.
07:00 But like it's just not... nobody likes to play their buddies and I totally agree with that. And then the Washington State deal,
07:07 you know, we, my
07:10 sophomore year, we won in like, I think we won by like three or something like that down there.
07:16 And we should have won by a lot more. We ain't going back. You know what I mean?
07:20 And so that's where it kind of started.
07:22 And again, this is not a knock on
07:25 Coug fans, but like your basketball program besides the Aaron Baines and whoever the... I forgot the name of the little point guard that
07:32 was there. Like you've got some good teams.
07:34 Obviously, Clay Thompson, but like during those years
07:38 it's just like scheduling wise it didn't help us. So I think it's cool that it's coming back.
07:45 It has to come back. Yeah, but it'd be cool to have a game down in
07:48 Pullman. Yeah, no kidding. So it's cool for the local aspect. I think it's great. The league had to expand somehow.
07:55 But
07:57 the huge but is it's two years. So what is the...
08:01 what are they preparing for? Is it the West Coast Conference preparing for trying to create a
08:07 Pac-12 where they're
08:09 kind of the Pac-12 now
08:11 type of deal or is it the Pac-2 or the Pac-12, right? Are they
08:17 saying, all right, we got to get
08:20 scheduling done and then let's start, you know, and you know start asking teams
08:25 hey, in two years when the TV deals up or we got a new team, everybody's TV deals come up or whatever
08:30 from the Mount West we're gonna pick
08:32 you know, San Diego State, we're gonna pick Wyoming or whatever. Whatever you view the biggest market is and create a Pac-8, Pac-10,
08:40 Pac-12, whatever it is. So that's where I'm a little bit curious, but obviously that's a time will tell and that's that's a
08:46 me just thinking out loud and wondering. I have no inside information on that if that's what it is, but that's what it seems like.
08:53 But cool. We got two other spots we can go to now and
08:57 like I said, there's a home and home with a local feel to it and yeah, I like it. I do like it.
09:04 I thought I had like multiple texts from people and they're like, did you hear?
09:08 Did you hear? And I'm like and I got on Twitter and it was yeah, I think I got more excited about it initially and then
09:16 I you step back and you're like you look at the Ken Palm and like and
09:19 WSU is pretty good this year. They've had some good wins and they're having a good record but like
09:26 Oregon State, I don't, it's kind of a wash. Yeah, it is a wash. I mean, that's not a knock.
09:32 They had that great Elite 8 run a few years ago, but they haven't
09:36 in good sense. That's not a knock. I know Wayne a little bit. He's a nice guy and he's a good coach obviously,
09:42 but they haven't had very good talent there after the Elite 8 run after that good class.
09:45 So hopefully you can bring it back, but it's great for the
09:49 you know for the West Coast Conference. So again, it's it's gonna be something that adds a local flair to it and then also
09:56 you know, what is
09:59 what's the steps going forward is what I think this the the check mark the beginning of it and that's what if I was a
10:07 fan and obviously a commentator on this stuff is what I'm gonna be looking for. What's the next steps?
10:12 Is it prepared? Is the West Coast Conference preparing for something or are they trying to hold a Gonzaga or is
10:18 Washington State pack Oregon State saying hey, all right, we like your league
10:23 but we want to get rid of X and X and then we'll invite X and X and we'll make us a
10:28 Pack 10 again. Yeah, you know I'm saying that's a real thing because like the West Coast Conference I think at volleyball solid, right?
10:35 Obviously, it's solid in basketball
10:37 Obviously, there's no football
10:40 But yeah, it'll be interesting to see how this works out
10:44 but again, I
10:46 Know this is a men's basketball thing, but it really affects the girls side. It's even more. So yeah
10:51 Yeah way more
10:52 So it just does because like I said, Washington State beat the girls this year down there was a fantastic game over time
10:57 But they won the pack 12 last year. They're a great program
11:00 So that's like oh, yeah, you know here comes another, you know big program and not that
11:06 Lisa and Craig and the staff don't have the talent, but it's like oh we got it
11:11 You know, you got another challenger Portland's good to you as well. So it'll be interesting on the girls side
