00:53 who is the founder of the Althani Group,
00:55 a multinational conglomerate company headquartered in Ahmedabad, India.
01:00 Founded in 1998, the company today is a crucial player in coal trading,
01:05 coal mining, oil and gas exploration, ports,
01:09 multimodal logistics, and power generation, among others.
01:14 Born into a business family,
01:16 he without a doubt inherited his forefather's business acumen,
01:20 but did not develop any interest in the family's textile business.
01:25 Althani was an ambitious young man.
01:27 He dropped out of school and moved to Mumbai from Ahmedabad
01:31 to strive and seek his fortune.
01:33 He first started with diamond brokering,
01:36 where he found great success within years and was soon a millionaire.
01:41 He returned home on the behest of his brother
01:44 to help him run a small plastics factory.
01:47 An entrepreneur at heart, eventually Althani set up his own business,
01:51 Althani Enterprises, which became the Althani Group's flagship company.
01:57 Initially dealing in export and import of commodities,
02:00 the business soon expanded to include coal mining,
02:03 ports, power generation, agri-infrastructure,
02:06 edible oil and transmission, and gas distribution, among other ventures.
02:12 Althani is well known for being a risk-taker,
02:15 and his business strategy revolves heavily around excessive leverage and political patronage.
02:21 His phenomenal success as a first-generation entrepreneur
02:25 often leads to comparisons with another Gujarati entrepreneur,
02:29 Dhirubhai Ambani, the founder of Reliance Industries.
02:33 Althani was born on June 24, 1962, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India,
02:40 into a Baniya family, Dushyantilal and Shanta Althani.
02:44 He has seven siblings. His family is involved in the textile business.
02:50 He was ambitious and determined from a very young age.
02:54 He had little interest in academics and dropped out of school as a teenager.
02:59 He later attended the Gujarat University, but did not stay to complete his degree.
03:06 While he was interested in business, he had no intention of joining his father's textile unit.
03:13 His entrepreneurial spirit made him leave Ahmedabad and move to Mumbai when he was only 18.
03:20 Possessing just a few hundred rupees, the young man was determined to make it big.
03:26 He began working as a diamond sorter at Mahindra Brothers,
03:31 and set up his own diamond brokerage business after a couple of years.
03:36 His business did well, and he became a millionaire by the time he was 20.
03:41 By this time, his elder brother had newly purchased a plastic factory in Ahmedabad,
03:47 and asked Adani to help him in running it.
03:50 Adani returned to Ahmedabad and started working with his brother.
03:54 He soon began commodity trading by importing polyvinyl chloride, or PVC,
04:00 a key raw material for manufacturing plastic.
04:03 For that, he visited South Korea, where he made a deal for importing PVC.
04:09 In 1988, he established Adani Exports Limited, now known as the Adani Enterprises Limited.
04:17 The company initially dealt in agricultural commodities and power,
04:22 and eventually expanded over the years.
04:25 The liberalization and economic reforms of 1991 boosted Adani's business,
04:32 and increased revenues and profits for his company.
04:36 The favorable business environment allowed Adani to expand his company rapidly.
04:42 In 1993, the government of Gujarat invited private companies to run the Mundra Port,
04:48 and in 1995, Adani won the contract.
04:52 It was initially operated by Mundra Port and Special Economic Zone Limited,
04:58 which was later expanded into the Adani Boats and Special Economic Zone Limited.
05:03 It is today India's largest private multiport operator.
05:08 Adani is the founder of Adani Power Limited, the power business subsidiary of Adani Group in 1996.
05:16 The company is India's largest private power producer,
05:19 and also the largest solar power producer of India.
05:24 The Adani Group is an Indian multinational conglomerate,
05:28 and its headquarters is located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
05:33 Adani got married to Preeti Adani, and they have two sons.
05:38 The elder son is named Karan Adani, and the younger one is Jeet Adani.
05:43 His wife, Preeti, is a dentist who also contributes in Gautam's work
05:48 as the managing trustee of the Adani Foundation,
05:51 especially in the matter of education.
05:55 She runs several campaigns for the education of children.
06:00 Karan Adani has completed his graduation in economics from Purdue University, US.
06:07 After completing his studies, he joined his father's business.
06:12 Karan was appointed as the CEO of Adani Ports and SEZ with effect from January 2016.

06:51 Gautam Adani was one of the hostages at the Taj Hotel during the tragic 26/11.
06:57 Adani, along with other hostages, was hiding in the basement of the hotel.
07:03 The next morning, along with other hostages, he was rescued by the NSG commandos.
07:10 During his childhood, Adani visited Kandla Port on a school tour.
07:16 He was awestruck by the mammoth port and he made a promise to himself
07:21 to build a port of similar scale when he grows up.
07:26 And sure enough, he fulfilled his promise in 1988
07:30 when he won the contract to build and operate the Mundra Port.
07:36 He scaled up the Mundra Port to become the biggest cargo port in India.
07:42 Now talking about his assets, Adani has a palatial bungalow
07:47 at Gandhinagar Highway in Gurgaon, India.
07:51 Apart from that, he has a lot of real estate properties globally.
07:56 As we can expect, the car collection of Adani is quite huge.
