00:00 The Bureau of Customs is investigating the online sale of unclaimed Balikbayan boxes.

00:16 This is how I would describe the Balikbayan boxes that were saved and worked hard by OFWs

00:23 to send to their families, especially during Christmas.

00:27 But on Facebook, we see posts of people selling unclaimed Balikbayan boxes,

00:33 some of which are priced at only P5,000.

00:37 We sent a message to the seller but he did not reply.

00:40 This is how the Bureau of Customs is investigating,

00:44 including the viral video of a content creator who bought an unclaimed Balikbayan box.

00:50 We are investigating where the source is and what Balikbayan boxes are being sold online.

00:57 The Bureau of Customs is investigating,

00:59 but they are not the ones selling unclaimed Balikbayan boxes.

01:02 Normally, we give the handling of Balikbayan boxes to the owners of the boxes,

01:13 to the families of OFWs.

01:16 Some cargo companies have admitted that they sell unclaimed packages

01:21 for P3,000 to P5,000 to online traders.

01:24 But these packages have been stored in their warehouses for more than a year

01:28 and they are paying storage fees.

01:31 We have spent money to mobilize the cargo from their homes,

01:35 shipping it all the way and sending it to there,

01:39 and keeping it in safe and secure custody with us.

01:42 So at least let us cover a small part of the freight.

01:45 They are calling the shipping companies before disposing of the packages.

01:49 But none of them are able to contact the shipping companies.

01:51 But there are OFWs like Nurse Acanada in Cebuena

01:55 who lost their Balikbayan boxes that they shipped to Cavite in 2019.

02:00 The courier from Canada, who previously declared bankruptcy,

02:03 did not pay the fees to the Bureau of Customs.

02:07 But when he asked the Customs,

02:09 he was not able to find out where the cargo was stored.

02:13 Now, if they will get it,

02:15 they were told that they need to pay P18,000 to P20,000.

02:20 P18,000 to P20,000 is too expensive.

02:22 It's more expensive than the cargo?

02:24 It's not even worth it for my family.

02:26 But the Customs said they don't have such a police.

02:29 We never demanded payment just to get the cargo.

02:35 If we can prove that, we will make sure that we will file administrative cases

02:40 and we will suspend or terminate this employee.

02:44 In the first three months of 2024,

02:46 Customs will issue a list of accredited consolidators and forwarding companies

02:52 to guide and not deceive the OFWs who are shipping Balikbayan boxes.
