00:00 Former MP Charles Santiago supported a minister's idea to fine companies for breaking their
00:08 promise to give jobs to foreign workers, adding that the fine should be at least Rs 50,000
00:13 for each duped worker.
00:16 He said the Rs 50,000 sum would include the cost of a migrant worker's return flight,
00:21 loss of pay and recruitment fees to agents back in their home country.
00:26 Previously, Plantation and Commodities Minister Johari Gani had said companies that deceive
00:30 foreign workers with jobs and leave them in the lurch should pay a fine of Rs 20,000 to
00:36 Rs 30,000.
00:38 This came after 171 Bangladeshis were arrested last month after marching to report their
00:44 agents for not securing promised jobs.
00:47 Johari's call is important.
00:50 He's preparing the industry to face challenges in the coming years as Europe and America
00:55 ramp up their false labour protocols.
00:57 This means if you are found to have violated false labour indicators, your products would
01:01 face product sanctions entering Europe, United States, Canada and Mexico.
01:06 This would spell disaster for an exporting country such as ours.
01:11 If we cannot resolve this, we should put a moratorium on bringing in foreign workers,
01:15 especially Bangladeshis.
01:17 We have too many of them coming in, but without jobs.
01:22 Land Rights Activist Adrian Pereira said fines might be an obvious deterrent, but might also
01:28 give rise to bribery.
01:30 There will be employers paying bribes to escape.
01:35 What needs to be done is we enforce labour inspections that are competent to weed out
01:42 false labour.
01:44 These workers being brought in when jobs are not available, that is human trafficking.
01:50 Go after the masterminds.
