Mr Sunak was asked by ITV what he thought it says that it has taken an ITV drama to get the Government to “refocus on the issue of the [Horizon] scandal at the Post Office?”

He said: “This was an absolutely appalling miscarriage of justice.

“These things obviously started a really long time ago, and it’s right that they’re looked at properly.

“People were treated absolutely appallingly; it’s wrong and we’ll do everything we can to make it right.

“My predecessors started the process of doing that […] People should know that we are on it and want to make things right.”

He said that the Justice Secretary Alex Chalk is looking into “speeding up the process”.

00:00 Now, these things obviously started a very long time ago,
00:04 and it's right that they're looked at properly.
00:06 And the stories are appalling.
00:08 People were treated absolutely appallingly.
00:10 That's wrong, and we should do everything
00:12 we can to make it right.
00:15 I would say that over the last few years,
00:17 my predecessors started the process of doing that,
00:19 had the inquiry.
00:20 Actually, as chancellor, I approved the compensation
00:23 schemes for the first time, which
00:25 are now in the process of being paid out,
00:27 and over almost 150 million pounds
00:30 has been paid out to thousands of people.
00:33 So people should know that we are on it,
00:35 and we want to make this right.
00:36 The money's been set aside.
00:38 Now, what we are now looking at is,
00:40 how can we speed all of that up?
00:42 Understandably, we-- I'm very clear.
00:44 We want to get that out the door as quickly as possible.
00:47 There are legal processes that people have had to go through,
00:50 but the justice secretary today is
00:51 meeting with the relevant ministers
00:53 to see is there more we can do to speed up
00:55 some of those processes.
00:56 But people should be rest assured, the money is there.
00:59 I approved it as chancellor.
01:00 There are three different compensation schemes,
01:02 and we will do everything we can to make this right for all
01:05 the people affected.
01:06 It's simply wrong what happened.
01:07 They shouldn't have been treated like this,
01:09 and we should do everything we can to make it right for them.
