00:00 We now come to some sad breaking news from Germany. One of the greats of
00:09 German and world football, Franz Beckenbauer, has died at the age of
00:13 78. It is already the lead story on most German news outlets. He was
00:19 nicknamed Der Kaiser. He dominated German football in the 1960s and
00:25 is arguably the country's greatest footballer. He has been ill in recent
00:30 times and some of his former teammates have expressed the hope in recent
00:34 weeks that he would get better again without giving us any great hope that
00:39 he would do so. Lothar Matthäus said a few months ago that Franz always
00:46 said that health is the most important thing in life. He doesn't have that
00:50 at the moment. He has passed away at the age of 78. He joined Bayern
00:56 Munich in 1958. He made his first team debut five years later. He was the
01:01 captain from 1971 and helped Bayern win three European Cups up to 1976.
01:09 Four Bundesliga titles as well. In 1971, he was made the captain of West
01:15 Germany's national team. He took them to the 1972 European Championship
01:19 and the World Cup in 1974. He had been in the West Germany team that lost
01:24 to England in the 1966 World Cup final at Wembley. He was named European
01:29 Footballer of the Year in 1972 and again four years later. In the latter
01:35 stages of his career, he played with the New York Cosmos in the era when
01:39 Pelé was amongst a host of world stars who were also playing their trade in
01:45 the United States. He went back to Germany and played for Hamburg for a
01:49 couple of years. His final year as a player was 1984. He won 103 caps for
01:55 Germany and he then became manager of the West German team in 1984. They
02:01 were runners-up in the World Cup in 1986 and the winner in 1990. He had an
02:08 extensive managerial career. He managed Marseille in France and then Bayern
02:13 Munich in 1993-94. And then for a second spell in 1996. He became Bayern's
02:20 vice president and the vice president of the German Football Federation in
02:24 1998, overseeing Germany's successful bid to host the 2006 World Cup. He
02:31 later served in executive capacities for Bayern and for the world governing
02:35 body FIFA as well. He holds the title of honorary captain of both Germany
02:40 and Bayern Munich. Along with Pelé, Maradona is considered one of the
02:47 all-time greats of the 20th century, certainly in world football. As Bayern
02:53 coach, he won the German championship in 1994 and the UEFA Cup in 1996. He
02:59 is credited as inventing the attacking sweeper position from defense. Very
03:05 elegant player, could dribble the ball out of defence in a way that was
03:09 almost unknown until he arrived. Fantastic range of passing, short or
03:13 long, didn't matter to Beckenbauer. He has true legendary status,
03:18 particularly in his home country, but also around the continent and the
03:22 world. He was European Footballer of the Year on two occasions. He won
03:26 103 caps for West Germany, playing at three World Cups, two Euros. He won
03:32 the 1974 World Cup as captain and then again as the manager in 1990. That
03:39 has only been matched by two men, Didier Deschamps and Mario Zagala, the
03:44 Brazilian who died a few days ago, winning the World Cup as a player and
03:48 a manager. Only those three people. He won three consecutive European
03:53 Cups with Bayern Munich in 1974, 1975 and 1976. The great Franz Beckenbauer
04:02 has died at the age of 78. We will bring you more tributes as we get them
04:07 here on Sky Sports News. One of football's all-time greats.
