00:09 But that was nothing compared to the drama that unfolded today.

00:23 >> So this is our 48-hour chrono stage, the big surprise of this Dakar 2024.
00:28 Almost 600 kilometers, just dunes in the empty quarter.
00:33 What makes it special is that it takes place over two days to cover those 600K.
00:39 The stage is difficult and long, and we've decided that at 4 o'clock on the first
00:44 day, everyone will have to get to one of the bivouacs we've set up along the route.
00:48 They're very basic bivouacs, just a sleeping bag, a tent, and
00:52 military-style food rations, nothing else.
00:54 They'll spend the night there, and
00:56 the next morning set off again to finish stage six.

01:07 >> It's hard to manage fuel consumption.
01:09 I eased off a bit to make sure I got here, but
01:11 the next section's longer, so we'll have to watch out.
01:14 >> For the first time in Dakar history, a 48-hour chrono.
01:17 Times taken at the next of seven bivouacs reached after 4 PM, and
01:21 overnight, no connection at all to the outside world.
01:24 It takes us back to the great epics of the African era, endless stages.

01:57 >> I think it's just gonna be like a survival, so we'll see how we can do.
02:01 >> Still kind of want to try and learn how it's gonna work, but
02:05 yeah, we can ride until 4 o'clock, so that's about all I know.
02:10 Hopefully we can cover a fair bit of ground today, and
02:15 then it'll be quite a small day tomorrow.
02:18 >> My strategy for today is to just ride as long as I can until they force me to
02:22 stop, but yeah, this is a strategy and a game plan that I think is gonna be
02:27 difficult for everyone to try and manage.
02:30 >> I have a very good start position, so
02:33 that gives me the opportunity to attack, and we will see.
02:39 >> Sand as far as the eye can see, and nothing but silence.
02:43 Well, until 8 AM anyway.

02:48 It hasn't been a fantastic Dakar for Skyler, and
02:51 the Utah man couldn't shave his rally.
02:53 This terrain bashed the tash just a little too much.

03:00 >> Was doing my best and trying to contact the team to see if there's anything I can
03:05 do, but unfortunately I don't have the resources or
03:08 tools out there in the desert to fix the issue.
03:11 >> Joy turned to despair for yesterday's winner, Pablo Quintanilla.
03:14 12K before the first refueling, he ran out of gas.
03:17 Running on empty in the empty quarter is not an option.

03:24 >> It's sad, when you've been working hard for
03:28 a long time to try to accomplish one goal.
03:32 >> If you ever doubted what it takes and what it takes out of you,
03:34 how much it means and how much it can crush you.
03:36 The starting order was the reverse of the rally GP standing, so
03:40 Joan Barrera led out.
03:42 And despite injuring his ribs yesterday,
03:44 the Spanish hero on his hero team rally bike led all day long.
03:49 That's just over seven hours, picking up eight minutes in bonuses.
03:52 The courage of this ride from Bang Bang proves he's no chicken.
03:55 >> So we are losing some time for sure with the riders, but they are coming.
03:59 But we expect like this, so hard to push and
04:02 make a physical condition on the limit.
04:05 >> Adrien Van Beveren also rode 513K like Barrera reaching Bivouac F.
04:11 But he did so in the best time of the day.
04:13 AVB the MVP, KPH the Frenchman's USP.
04:16 >> I was not sure about the fuel, but we are here and
04:22 we need to keep focused because it's going to be very long.
04:24 >> Joining them at Bivouac F, the 2020 champion, 121 down.
04:29 Top ten on every special, Brabeck's breakneck speed and
04:32 June durability is building a platform for a second overall.
04:35 >> We're up front, so the only thing we can do is run from the pack while
04:41 the pack tries to catch us.
04:42 >> Pablo did manage to fill his tank but
04:45 lost over an hour before rejoining the fray.
04:48 It's a big job for the Chilean if he's to make it back and
04:50 achieve a seventh top five in his twelfth appearance.
04:53 Everyone in the top ten except for Dumontier and
04:57 Quintanilla made it to Bivouac F.
05:01 >> The odds made it as far as Bivouac D with reigning double champion
05:04 Alexander Giroud arriving two and a half minutes quicker than Manuel Andujar.
05:08 With Marcelo Medeiros cozying up with his podium partners.

05:17 And so to the ultimates and this was another day with no assistance.
05:20 But while driverless cars may be the future,
05:23 BRX were taking it a bit far today, preparing for today's chrono.
05:26 Still, if you can use the force to forge ahead of your rivals,

05:41 You know this already by now, but big dunes can mean big, big problems.
05:49 Yazeed Al-Raji was leading the Dakar,
05:51 the first Saudi ever to do so until kilometer 51 in the chrono.
05:55 The wrecked overdrive Toyota on its side, roll bar smashed,
05:58 co-driver Timo Gottschalk crestfallen.

06:25 Stefan Pederhansel was flying, he was running fourth and
06:28 had been as high as second.
06:30 He's looking for a 15th Dakar victory, but
06:32 it looks like it's not gonna be his year.

06:38 then when we wanted to use the hydraulic jack, it broke.
06:41 The body of the jack was torn, so we lost all the fluid.
06:44 And we don't have a manual jack, so
06:45 we don't know how we're going to change the wheel.

06:52 >> Remember how Seb Loeb took an intentional penalty yesterday to

06:57 Well, his gamble paid off to some extent.
06:59 After 400k, he was third fastest, five minutes off the lead.
07:03 But yesterday's 15 minute time loss is gonna be a big hit to Loeb's hopes of
07:07 a first Dakar title.
07:08 Nasser was first out today, first on the sand, first over the.
07:14 Actually not quite, even for
07:15 the five time champion, opening the road was a challenge.
07:17 Gerland Schisherit had moved ahead and soon,
07:20 Juan Cruz-Jacopini caught the pro drive after he got stuck.
07:23 The Argentinian had started six minutes later, but
07:26 now the two were side by side, both following the tracks of Schisherit.
07:30 Matias Ekstrom wasn't happy with the driving and navigation yesterday, but
07:34 was delighted at the changes to the setup.
07:36 He says the car feels the best it has all rally, and it worked today.
07:40 Ekstrom at the front all day, at 400k he was lying second.
07:43 But he was behind teammate Carlos Sainz, who was less than five minutes ahead, but
07:47 the Spaniard phenomenal today.
07:50 Al Ragi's shunt, Alatia's struggles and
07:53 Sainz's pace means the 61 year old is provisionally leading.
07:56 And who would bet on him winning a fourth Dakar?
07:59 Not me, that's for sure.

08:16 so at the moment it works, so hopefully it will work until the end.

08:40 Eric Gottschall, the youngest in the category, is smashing this rally to pieces.
08:44 No one seems to have an answer to his speed and consistency.
08:48 He got as far as Bivouac D, and
08:49 the pole has a 14 minute lead over Cristina Gutierrez.
08:54 Mitch Guthrie was his main headache for the first part of stage six.
08:57 He even made great strides on a T1+ but faded towards the end.
09:01 He did make it to Bivouac D though.

09:51 the Czech had put in around 40 minutes to Van Kasteren and Alis Lopreich.
09:55 That means he's now virtual rally leader.
