00:00 [indistinct chatter]
00:03 Protect yourself at all times, all right?
00:04 Hutch 'em up, wait for the bell.
00:08 - Our main event of the evening,
00:10 ten rounds for the WBA
00:12 Continental North America
00:14 Super Lightweight Champion
00:16 Jukin Bayev, rolled on.
00:20 A combined 42 career wins.
00:24 [indistinct chatter]
00:28 - Time. - Here we go.
00:31 It's time to fight.
00:33 Red and black trunks for 777.
00:37 Kazakhstan's
00:40 Batazan Jukinbayev.
00:43 20 wins, 16 knockouts.
00:46 Light blue and white trunks
00:48 for Argentina's Hugo Alberto, rolled on.
00:51 [indistinct chatter]
00:57 - These guys both had fire in their eyes
00:59 looking at each other from across the ring
01:01 before the announcements.
01:03 - Yeah, you can see that early jitters, too.
01:05 A lot of energy inside these guys right now.
01:08 Let's see how it plays out.
01:11 Seven first-round finishes for Jukinbayev.
01:16 - Rolled in, actually fights kind of jittery.
01:19 You see him jumping in, lunging in.
01:20 This is his style.
01:22 - And this is righty versus lefty.
01:23 That lunging in could lead to some head clashes.
01:25 You gotta be careful. Nice turn to left hand.
01:27 A nice right hand.
01:29 - Whoa!
01:31 [indistinct chatter]
01:34 - Okay. Okay.
01:38 - I think Jukinbayev thought he was gonna step back
01:40 and counter with the left hand,
01:42 but he stepped back with too much momentum.
01:43 He kept going backwards, and then the right hand
01:45 knocked him down.
01:46 I don't think it was a shot that hurt him,
01:48 but I think it was momentum kept taking him backwards,
01:51 so getting hit with that shot
01:52 increased the backwards momentum and he fell.
01:54 - Just landed another right hand, rolled in, did.
01:56 - I told you to watch out for Roldan, man.
01:57 He's not coming here to lose.
01:59 - And it's a quick one, too.
02:01 - Oh, left hand. - And a quick one, too.
02:03 Answered back, Paulie.
02:05 - And Roldan, I love how he fights like the puncher.
02:07 - Yeah, I told you. I told you that.
02:09 - He comes in acting like the puncher.
02:12 - Don't let those six knockouts fool you.
02:14 This guy's gonna pretend-- this guy's gonna act like the puncher.
02:17 - And Jukinbayev landed some good timing shots, too.
02:20 But Roldan, nice exciting start.
02:23 Went southpaw and landed a moment ago.
02:26 - Roldan's tricky, man.
02:27 He switches sides and he fires out of nowhere.
02:30 - Very tough, very durable.
02:36 Second fight here in the United States.
02:39 What a great round one.
02:45 - I'm telling you, there's gonna be a head clash in this fight.
02:49 Roldan's following up with his head every single time.
02:52 - I always feel like Argentinian fighters are one of two ways.
02:55 They're either like Roldan,
02:57 and they're very awkward and scrappy and explosive
03:00 and come forward in great shape and durable,
03:02 or they're really classy, good boxers.
03:05 - Like Nicolino Locher or Sergio Martinez.
03:08 - Exactly.
03:10 Or like Omar Viz.
03:12 - And Omar Navarro.
03:13 Roldan is definitely A, Chris.
03:15 - Yeah, definitely. He'd be the scrappy, explosive,
03:18 more athletic than classically trained.
03:22 - Sometimes you get the guys that fight like Roldan,
03:23 but they can punch like Maidana.
03:25 - Yes.
03:27 - What a start to our main event of the evening.
03:32 - Roldan's basically Maidana without the heavy hands,
03:35 but he shows some good hands there.
03:37 - I don't think a lot of people expect to see him
03:43 score a knockdown in the first round.
03:45 Let's take a look at that.
03:46 - Let's see if it was what I thought here,
03:47 but it goes back.
03:50 - He did a little bit of feet, too, and got tangled.
03:52 - He hit him with a right hand, a good right hand at first.
03:54 - He did get hit, but it might have been the feet, too,
03:56 that got tangled.
03:59 - He wasn't a great man.
04:00 - Yeah.
04:02 [crowd cheering]
04:05 - Batuzan, Jukembaev's only loss.
04:18 His 20-1 in his career
04:22 was to Subriel Matias back in May of 2021.
04:29 Round number two.
04:31 - I had mentioned from the top, he was very much in that fight,
04:33 and he had Matias hurt on several different occasions
04:36 in that fight, was handling himself quite well
04:39 until the power punching of Matias finally caught up.
04:44 - Joseph Adorno, the only man to defeat Hugo Alberto Roldan.
04:50 That was a 10-round unanimous decision.
04:53 - September of last year.
04:55 - That's a slip.
04:58 - Roldan got hit when he's down.
04:59 That's why he's saying like--
05:00 - Yeah.
05:04 - That was a real hard shot that he took while--
05:07 on the way down.
05:09 Or while he was already down.
05:13 - Big power displayed by both men early.
05:17 - You see what happens, Jukembaev has to go backwards.
05:19 - Oh, hurt him again. Hurt him again.
05:23 - Jukembaev has to go backwards
05:24 because he's gonna get butted
05:26 if he just tries to slip these shots.
05:28 - Not great, not great.
05:29 - The thing about Roldan is he doesn't just throw one punch.
05:30 He steps through, punches with both hands.
05:33 - And you see, you don't want to lose positioning
05:34 by stepping back, but you don't step back, you get butted.
05:37 So Jukembaev is sort of in an awkward position
05:41 when he's got punches coming his way.
05:43 - He's between a head and a right hand.
05:45 - Yeah. - Rocking a hard place.
05:49 - Yeah, 'cause if he goes straight back,
05:51 he's out of position, and Roldan continues
05:53 with the assault, just throws punches.
05:55 But if he holds his ground,
05:57 he can hit with a headbutt.
06:01 You see Roldan, he circles the ring,
06:02 and oh, good counter shot there by Jukembaev.
06:06 - Man, Jukembaev, he's got really dangerous counter punches.
06:11 - Jukembaev coming off a four-week training camp
06:13 in Colorado Springs.
06:16 Said it reminded him of his homeland in the mountains,
06:19 worked with some of the top amateurs from the Army team.
06:24 And he has worked with Terence Crawford
06:27 and his team in the past.
06:28 - Yeah, they trained in Colorado as well, Crawford.
06:34 - You know what it is about Roldan.
06:35 He's offbeat.
06:36 - Yeah, offbeat for him is very difficult to time.
06:42 Punches from near angles, comes in from everywhere.
06:45 - You see Jukembaev there tries to hold his ground
06:47 and fire back, but again, you're risking a headbutt
06:49 every time you do hold your ground.
06:50 - But you notice the hand position of Jukembaev.
06:52 He's keeping his gloves very much in front of his head
06:53 for that reason, Chan, for the headbutt.
06:55 - Break, break.
06:57 Go straight for it, son.
07:01 - Explosive start to our main event.
07:04 - Mike Goldberg, my powerful partners,
07:08 the former two-time world champion,
07:09 the Magic Man, Pauly Malignaggi,
07:11 former world champion, Chris Algieri.
07:15 This main event for the WBA,
07:16 Continental North America, super lightweight belt.
07:20 [crowd shouting]
07:23 [bell ringing]
07:27 - Got ourselves another great fight.
07:30 - Oh, yeah.
07:32 - And they started fast tonight, too.
07:34 - Yes.
07:36 [crowd shouting]
07:39 - Boom. - Yeah, he's down.
07:40 He gets hit with that shot.
07:42 - That was a hard knuckle punch, too.
07:44 That was a good right hand that rolled down the ladder
07:46 once again, that had Jukembaev shook up.
07:49 - Pushes him back, and he just keeps going.
07:51 - Good. Better round, better round.
07:54 Better round. - Gotta look past the numbers.
07:56 Gotta look past the knockout, set the KOs,
07:58 but he's a tricky puncher.
08:00 - He's a tricky puncher.
08:03 - Somebody gotta tell him he's got seven KOs.
08:04 He doesn't really-- - He doesn't know it.
08:07 He's really not acting like it.
08:11 - Raul Camacho in the corner of Roldan.
08:15 Charles Leverett in the corner of Jukembaev.
08:18 [bell ringing]
08:22 Scheduled for ten.
08:24 [crowd shouting]
08:27 [bell ringing]
08:29 - Southpaw from Kazakhstan
08:32 in the red and black trunks.
08:33 Argentina's Roldan El Nato
08:36 in the light blue and white trunks,
08:38 representing his home nation.
08:41 Big left hand
08:44 thrown by Jukembaev.
08:45 - You see how he comes forward punching?
08:47 If you hold your ground, you gotta--
08:49 it's getting buttoned.
08:51 - I don't even think he knows what stance he's in
08:53 when he's throwing. Lefty, righty,
08:54 steps through with his-- has his punching.
08:58 - You see, then he goes all over the ring,
09:00 so then it's hard to track him down to get the get-back,
09:02 'cause you wanna get the get-back
09:04 after he's done doing that, but he's all over the ring.
09:07 [crowd shouting]
09:10 - Roldan won the WBA
09:15 Federlatin welterweight title in February of this year
09:19 in his home country of Argentina.
09:22 - Good counter left hand there by Button Jukembaev.
09:24 And well down his heart.
09:27 Jukembaev... - No, no, no, no, no, no.
09:29 - Continuing to swing away. - Break, break, break.
09:31 Get back. Come here, brother.
09:33 - Smile happens, Jukembaev.
09:35 - This is a good old-fashioned scrap.
09:38 Oh, right hand!
09:40 - And left hand by Button Jukembaev, too.
09:42 - Roldan lands a good right hand,
09:43 and Jukembaev comes right back with his own left hand.
09:47 Tip or tap, these two.
09:49 [crowd shouting]
09:52 - So why should you watch every other Wednesday night
09:56 on ProBoxTV?
09:58 This is why.
10:00 - Get him up.
10:01 - And the first two fights are pretty good assets
10:05 that we bring you every other Wednesday as well.
10:07 - Roldan's lefty right now.
10:09 He's--he's--he's--
10:11 Oh!
10:13 Wait, so one, two, but it's outpost stance.
10:15 Change his stance and does another one, too.
10:17 - He's a wild man.
10:19 - Team got a little streak of blue for Argentina.
10:25 - That's--that footwork, man.
10:26 That's--I wouldn't say it's slick or pretty,
10:29 but it's getting the job done tonight so far.
10:33 - It's not messy footwork, but it's--
10:34 - No, certainly not.
10:36 - Messy as an eye, of course.
10:38 - Yeah.
10:40 - But it certainly is effective.
10:42 [crowd shouting]
10:45 Great international flavor to our card here tonight.
10:52 [crowd shouting]
10:55 - Yeah, Jiggle Byte could make his life a lot easier.
10:59 I'm not complaining 'cause we've got a shootout,
11:02 and it's a lot of fun, but I think if he just settled down
11:04 behind his jab and just let his hands go
11:06 in a very fundamental fashion, he'd probably have a lot--
11:08 - I think he's--he's having a hard time doing that
11:10 because of the weird movement of--of Roldan.
11:13 - He's trying to time the counters, and it's just--
11:15 - Yeah, and so now you're not gonna be able to do that.
11:17 - No, I think he should just let his hands go.
11:19 Start--start getting on the jab.
11:22 Get your feints going.
11:24 'Cause he's waiting. He's waiting for the counter.
11:26 - He can't find the range. Look, if Roldan just doesn't
11:28 give him that range, he's all over the place.
11:30 - Roldan does a nice job of doing a lot of awkward
11:32 lateral movement and then firing in linearly with--with,
11:35 you know, one-twos and stepping through with--
11:36 - Takes over at kamikaze, I don't know what--
11:38 - Yeah, kamikaze's a good way to put it.
11:40 Okay, we see there was that nice overhand left counter
11:46 from Dukoubaev that had the late reaction shot,
11:49 had the legs of Roldan in all types of trouble.
11:53 And then there we saw a good two-one combination
11:57 from Roldan. Such a tricky puncher.
11:59 You don't know where the shots are coming from.
12:01 Better round for Dukoubaev, obviously, 'cause he got--
12:05 he had Roldan a little bit hurt.
12:08 But still, Roldan was still successful at times.
12:10 - Yeah.
12:12 This is not gonna be an easy one to score, man.
12:13 - No. - This is gonna be a weird fight.
12:15 - No, extremely awkward. - Come on, don't follow.
12:16 Don't follow. Don't follow, okay?
12:18 Let's go. Use your jab. Let's go.
12:20 - Paulie, when you get caught like Dukoubaev did in round one,
12:24 you guys have been in that situation.
12:26 How long does it take mentally to settle back
12:28 into what was your original game plan?
12:31 - I mean, with a guy like this who's all over the place,
12:34 I mean, I don't think it's that easy, you know?
12:36 I mean, I don't know. I can remember getting dropped
12:38 early by Zab Judah in the second round
12:40 and then just got right back on the game plan
12:42 and it worked out. - Oh!
12:43 - Big overhand left.
12:45 - But I think every situation is different,
12:46 and--and--and Roldan is...
12:48 - A weird fighter.
12:50 - And Roldan comes right back
12:51 with a good left-hand, right-hand combination.
12:53 - Break! Break! Break!
12:55 - Like you said at the top of the show, Chris,
12:58 Roldan doesn't care about any game plans.
13:00 Coming out of the red corner,
13:02 his only plan is to leave with this belt.
13:04 - You see, he's hardly finding the range on him,
13:05 'cause look how--how much he moves.
13:07 And then when he stops, he's--he's doing
13:09 all kinds of weird stuff flying in.
13:12 He doesn't stop to rest so you can be basic with him.
13:14 You see right here? Jim, you see what I mean?
13:16 He'll stop here.
13:18 - He's dangerous, 'cause when he stops,
13:20 he's ready to fire. - But that's what I'm saying.
13:21 So it's hard for Dukumbayev to just beat him
13:24 with the basics 'cause he can't find the range on him.
13:26 - Oh, there he did.
13:29 - Oh!
13:32 - Keep it clean, guys. - See, he got behind the jab,
13:35 landed a left hand, then stepped back and countered.
13:39 - Solid and consistent for seven months
13:42 of Charles Leverett at Triple Threat Boxing
13:45 in Colorado Springs.
13:47 Dukumbayev, his trainer said,
13:51 has upgraded his game.
13:53 He's gonna need all of his game and then some
13:55 against this tough 22,
13:59 one-and-one fighter from Argentina.
14:01 - Dukumbayev doing an excellent job this round,
14:03 cutting off the ring, making it small,
14:05 putting a lot of physical pressure on his man.
14:08 - Only a matter of time before Oden jumps in.
14:10 - Yeah, and that's what Dukumbayev's waiting for.
14:12 - Good slip and rip by Dukumbayev.
14:15 [crowd shouting]
14:18 - Dukumbayev's just-- he's sitting on that left hand.
14:24 - Oh! - He went elbow in, right?
14:26 Was that an elbow? - No, a short left hook,
14:29 but Dukumbayev took it well.
14:32 - Well, you talked about clash of heads and now an elbow.
14:35 It could be left wing. We are to nine limbs.
14:38 - That was a hell of a shot. - Yeah.
14:39 - Dukumbayev took it really well.
14:41 Right on the point of the chin,
14:42 whether it was an elbow or a left hand.
14:44 [crowd shouting]
14:47 - All kinds of different angles.
14:52 Rodan able to throw from.
14:54 - And Rodan's the kind of guy, even when you find him,
14:56 he's hard to hit him clean, 'cause he's so awkward
14:58 the way he gives you the defensive looks.
15:02 - Yeah, he's certainly not a fundamental boxer,
15:05 but he is effective.
15:07 - The body shot there by Dukumbayev,
15:08 that's probably what you should go to a little bit more.
15:12 - That's another thing, from what I've seen from Rodan,
15:15 excellently--excellent conditioning.
15:17 He's able to keep this up for ten rounds, no problem.
15:20 - Keep it clean, keep it clean.
15:22 [bell dings] - Time!
15:29 [cheers and applause]
15:31 - His shoe's broken. Look at this.
15:33 - Uh-oh. Both of them.
15:35 His soles are starting to come off his shoes.
15:38 [crowd shouting]
15:40 - Dad's putting on some miles.
15:42 - And a good left hand there on this replay by Dukumbayev.
15:47 Then up against the ropes here, he goes.
15:50 Dukumbayev.
15:52 - That was that left hand, and we weren't sure
15:54 if it was a punch or an elbow.
15:56 - Oh, no, it was a forearm, dude.
15:58 - That was a good left hand to the chin.
16:01 That was a great shot.
16:03 - Maybe he followed it up with the forearm punch.
16:05 - Or maybe he punched through.
16:07 - Oh, dude, they just taped both soles.
16:09 Both soles were cut. That's even gonna work, dude.
16:11 That tape can make your feet slippery.
16:13 - Yeah, that's not a great idea.
16:15 They probably would've been better off
16:17 just taking the soles completely off that shoe.
16:19 - Yeah. Yeah.
16:21 Yeah.
16:23 - It's funny. I was looking at that shoe
16:25 when they came in. I've never seen it before.
16:28 Didn't look particularly-- - That explains why.
16:31 - Good shoe, and that explains why.
16:34 For a guy who moves a lot and stops on a dime
16:36 and switches directions, you need your footing underneath you.
16:39 Now if he's gonna be slipping and sliding,
16:41 he's gonna have a big problem. - That would be a real shame
16:43 if that becomes a factor in this fight.
16:46 - His feet already weren't that great to begin with.
16:54 - [chuckles]
16:57 - Round five.
16:59 Our main event's scheduled for ten.
17:02 - He stops on a dime and fires. - Yeah.
17:04 - I mean, he has-- - Oh!
17:06 - Oh, my goodness. - Both guys land a big left hand.
17:10 - Yeah, athleticism, quickness, explosiveness.
17:12 - If you're Jokom Baye, you're probably looking at your manager
17:14 like, "Dude, where'd you find this guy, dude?
17:16 Where'd you find this opponent?"
17:19 - ProBoxTV.
17:21 Good fighters, great fights.
17:25 - Yeah, regardless of how this fight ends up,
17:28 nobody's gonna want to fight this guy.
17:30 - Jokom Baye is the guy who's lost only to a current world champion, right?
17:34 - Yes. - And Roldan believes
17:36 that he got the better of Adorno on that night
17:40 in which it was a ten-round unanimous decision
17:43 going to Joseph Adorno.
17:45 - You know, Adorno's a good fighter in his own right,
17:47 so that's a good fight.
17:50 - Adorno's not had an easy schedule, you think about it.
17:52 - No. - You like, "But Jermaine Ortiz."
17:54 - "Albus Rodriguez." - "But this guy."
17:56 Even the guys he never heard of, like this guy.
17:58 - Yeah, Adorno. - Adorno Santos.
18:00 - Yeah. - He has been in with the murderers' row.
18:03 - And Roldan told us in the fighter meetings
18:06 he wasn't in the right mind for that fight,
18:09 so even though they felt they should've come away
18:12 with their arm raised,
18:14 he also was able to look in the mirror and say,
18:16 "I gotta improve." - I'll tell you what,
18:18 the way Adorno punches, though, you won't be in the right mind
18:20 if he hits you in the head with those shots. - Yes.
18:23 - Well, he's got someone in front of him,
18:25 and he's not a light puncher either.
18:28 - Look at you go by.
18:30 You went for the takedown, going for the round 2.
18:32 - I'm like, "You went for the judo toys, huh?"
18:34 Wrap around with two hands.
18:36 - Ronda Rousey would be proud.
18:38 The judoka.
18:43 50 seconds, round 5.
18:48 Still plenty of time for the head clashes,
18:53 but they're getting closer and closer.
18:55 - I think it's been Jukamayev's ability to pull and counter,
19:06 and also that he's been able to keep that guard very high
19:09 that we haven't seen a good clash of heads just yet.
19:12 Got a little abrasion under the eye of Roldan now
19:18 on his right side. - Yeah, maybe from the left hand.
19:22 Let go of the arm. Let go of the arm.
19:24 - Roldan loves to train. He's always on weight.
19:27 You have seen the good movement, the speed, and the high volume,
19:31 which he is well known for.
19:33 - He's getting nippy in there on the inside.
19:38 - Little heads rubbing against each other.
19:40 - I'm sensing a little frustration from Jukamayev.
19:44 - Yeah, I mean, can you blame him?
19:46 - No, certainly not.
19:48 - He's got a little head.
19:50 - Nice left hand there by Jukamayev.
19:56 He's got the cleaner work. I mean, that's Roldan.
19:59 - Roldan, yeah. - He's got the cleaner work there
20:01 at times with the straight shots, and that's what throws off too,
20:04 because he'll go from light, crazy work
20:06 to clean, straight, crisp work there.
20:08 - That was a tricky shot. Really short.
20:10 Nice right hand to the-- - And what are you expecting?
20:12 Because he comes in wild, then he throws in you a nice straight one.
20:15 - Yep.
20:16 - Get yourself a little bit, okay?
20:18 Don't be afraid of getting tired, but believe me, you're gonna go in sick.
20:21 - I'm gonna go in sick.
20:23 - Charles Leverett said of Jukamayev,
20:27 "All-around boxer can adjust on the fly, understands distance."
20:31 In the gym, they stress balance, distance, and defense.
20:37 Round number six of our main event of the evening.
20:42 Scheduled for 10.
20:45 - Butt is on Jukamayev, Hugo Alberto Roldan.
20:50 - Jukamayev with a couple of good shots.
21:03 - Roldan's got some beer on him too.
21:07 - Yeah. - A lot of times do.
21:09 - Yep.
21:12 - Get him up, get him up.
21:14 - He did go the distance, as I mentioned.
21:17 - Roldan shook off Jukamayev once again.
21:20 - Roldan again will walk through the counter
21:23 and then just throw-- land his own shot.
21:25 - Oh, Pasha hits there.
21:27 - Yeah. - Jukamayev got the worst end of that.
21:30 - Look at what happened there.
21:32 - No complaint, though.
21:39 - Winner takes home the WBA Continental North America
21:42 Super Lightweight Championship belt.
21:45 - Look at him.
21:46 - Paul, you got me laughing thinking about Jukamayev
21:48 looking at his manager like, "Where did you find this guy?"
21:51 - I mean, dude, this is--
21:53 I mean, I would be-- win or lose,
21:55 this is the part where you can't look good,
21:56 and it's impossible to look good regardless
21:58 whether you win or lose it.
22:00 - Looks like a little abrasion under the other eye now of Roldan.
22:05 It's got little-- little blotches of blood underneath both eyes.
22:10 - Good avoidance there by Jukamayev.
22:19 - Step back, step back, step back.
22:21 Step back.
22:22 - Look at the frenetic pace from Roldan.
22:25 - I think you've got to start looking to counter
22:27 from underneath if you're Jukamayev,
22:28 instead of over the top.
22:29 Jukamayev keeps stepping back,
22:30 we're gonna counter with the straight left hand.
22:32 I think you've got to start to at least consider
22:34 that step back the way you're doing it,
22:35 but then come with the uppercut instead,
22:37 'cause Roldan will fly in with his head,
22:39 leading with his head,
22:40 and you can probably meet him with something like that.
22:42 - Yeah, but you run that risk of having your hands lower
22:45 when you're coming up and under,
22:46 catching those headbutts.
22:47 I remember I was-- I fought a guy that I nicknamed the Billy Goat,
22:50 and my coach is wanting me to throw uppercuts,
22:53 and I'm like, every time I bring my hands anywhere near--
22:55 not near my face, I get headbutted, so...
22:58 - The thing is, if on that step back,
23:00 your weight is on your back foot,
23:02 so you should be able to protect yourself
23:04 with your lead shoulder in case.
23:06 - Good right hand by Roldan.
23:08 - Still requires some kind of timing.
23:11 - Big swing and a miss.
23:13 - Roldan's feeling confident right now.
23:17 - Step back, break, break, step back.
23:20 - Six of his seven career knockouts
23:23 came in his first ten fights.
23:25 The way Roldan throws in the aggressiveness
23:30 in which he fights with,
23:32 surprised he's not up around 16 like his opponent.
23:35 - Yeah, he definitely punches way more respectable
23:38 than the seven KOs that he has.
23:40 - Once again, Paulie,
23:43 Chris makes it sound so much more elegant.
23:46 [laughter]
23:48 Thank you, partner.
23:49 [laughter]
23:51 - Hey, hey, hey.
23:59 [speaking Spanish]
24:02 [whistle blows]
24:23 [indistinct chatter]
24:27 - Our main event continues.
24:30 Judges have their hands full in this one.
24:35 Red and black trunks for Badazon Chukabayev.
24:39 Light blue and white, Argentinian colors
24:42 for Hugo Alberto Roldan.
24:44 White colder palm on Naji, Chris, and Jerry.
24:47 - Sensing a shift here from Roldan.
24:49 He's, uh...
24:51 - Powerful partners.
24:53 - Coming forward, throwing some big punches.
24:55 - Yeah, nice left hand a second ago.
24:57 - Round number seven.
25:04 - And I feel like you also have to catch Roldan
25:06 when he's on the move.
25:08 You can't--nice shots there.
25:10 You can't catch Roldan--
25:11 you can't try to fight Roldan when he stops moving.
25:13 He's on a guy who's in flight a lot of times,
25:15 he can't really throw punches.
25:16 You notice Chukabayev, what he does,
25:18 he tries to cut off the ring and get to Roldan,
25:20 but then he's only looking to engage when Roldan stops.
25:23 Once Roldan stops, he's looking to fly in right away.
25:25 See, right here.
25:26 Now it's a lot harder to fight Roldan here.
25:28 - It's really hard to hit him with more than one shot, too.
25:31 - But on the move, you can attack him.
25:33 You can throw punches.
25:34 At worst, you'll miss, but he's not able to counter
25:36 if he's flying all over the place like that.
25:39 - Roldan has gone the ten-round distance
25:46 13 times in his professional career.
25:51 - [shouting]
25:54 - You see how Chukabayev will not engage him here?
25:58 He's waiting for him to stop.
26:00 Good job.
26:01 - A good call by the ref,
26:02 'cause that was a little bit of momentum shot,
26:04 even though the punch landed.
26:06 - Chukabayev with the 16 of his 20 wins
26:12 coming by knockout.
26:13 - Counting there for Chukabayev.
26:15 - And he's clipped with the left.
26:17 He's gone the full ten twice.
26:20 - Look at the shot Chukabayev's been looking for all night.
26:22 That pull and left hand over the top as Roldan reaches.
26:27 - Crowd loving it here tonight.
26:29 - Yeah, right here's where you gotta engage Roldan.
26:31 Instead, he allows him to bounce all over the ring,
26:33 and then watch, Chukabayev will look and get away from the stop.
26:36 Once Roldan stops, he's looking to fire first,
26:39 as he does there.
26:40 You've gotta catch Roldan while he's bouncing,
26:42 'cause he's hard to fight while you're bouncing
26:44 all over the place.
26:49 - And the tape job on the shoes that were coming apart
26:53 worked out pretty well.
26:54 - Worked out okay, didn't it?
26:55 - Better than I thought it would.
26:57 - Yeah, the fact that it hasn't been an issue,
26:59 and we haven't even noticed it.
27:01 - Being an hockey player, I notice it, of course.
27:05 Got his skates taped.
27:06 - Kind of makes the shoes look better.
27:08 - Yeah, look at that.
27:10 - I know, he's like, "Easy's now."
27:12 - Got Las Vegas on the back of his shoes.
27:17 - Left hand again.
27:18 - Oh, spent some time training there.
27:22 - Roldan's got some chin, man.
27:23 That was a left hand right on the money.
27:26 [bell ringing]
27:35 - Look at how particular he is.
27:37 [whistle blows]
27:39 [whistle blows]
27:45 [indistinct chatter]
27:48 [whistle blows]
27:54 - Here we see a beautiful overhand left.
27:56 - Yeah, right inside the right hook of Roldan.
28:00 - You really can't ask to hit a guy cleaner than that.
28:04 - Especially as he's throwing.
28:05 That was a good call by the ref,
28:06 'cause that was more of a forearm check.
28:08 - A lot of refs would have called that knockdown.
28:10 - More than not, even though it's not a knockdown.
28:13 - Yeah, it's not a knockdown.
28:14 It's a good move by the ref there,
28:15 but not called a knockdown.
28:16 - Meaning we got to right here,
28:17 make him have to do something, all right?
28:20 Come off the counter.
28:22 [whistle blows]
28:23 Good job. Come on, let's go.
28:24 Own it, own it.
28:26 - Chukwubaya and Lebrick have been together consistently
28:32 for seven months now.
28:35 They have trained on and off in the past.
28:40 Round number eight.
28:43 And the pace has not slowed at all.
28:50 - Break, break, break.
28:57 - Roldan, as you pointed out,
28:58 Chris, coming in in excellent condition.
29:01 Chukwubaya training at altitude in Colorado Springs.
29:06 - You got blood, Paul.
29:07 You been talking about that headbutt all night long.
29:09 - Yep. - It was bound to happen.
29:12 - And neither man is slow.
29:15 - Now, both these guys are in excellent condition.
29:19 Still three rounds to go.
29:20 These guys are moving, moving sharp.
29:23 Both look strong.
29:25 And now they got to come above the eye of Chukwubaya.
29:30 Not a great spot.
29:32 - Last eight fights for Roldan have gone the full 10.
29:38 - Again, though, Chukwubaya not engaging
29:40 when he's moving here.
29:41 Like this is when you should engage him.
29:45 - Had the knockdown in round number one, did Roldan.
29:52 - It's going to be an interesting fight to score.
29:56 Not jealous of the judges tonight.
29:58 - No, not at all.
30:00 But again, you see, Chukwubaya does not engage Roldan
30:02 when he's on the move.
30:04 Once Roldan stops,
30:06 he's not that easy to hit himself.
30:08 And he's also more dangerous
30:09 because he might fly in between, guys.
30:12 - We don't have 99, 91, 190, 190 in this one.
30:17 - No, no.
30:19 - Although we could have one one way
30:22 and then one the other way. - Yes.
30:23 - Wouldn't be a surprise there either.
30:26 Depends on what you like.
30:28 The thing about Roldan is you can never get any momentum with him.
30:33 And if you wait till he stops, he's set himself.
30:36 He's not easy to hit.
30:38 - It's turned into a rough and rugged battle.
30:44 - But Roldan likes fights like this.
30:47 He looks very comfortable.
30:50 - He likes to scrap.
30:53 - Scrap we got.
31:02 - And Roldan taking advantage of the fact
31:05 that he can move around freely.
31:07 When he moves around,
31:08 Chukwubaya does not really know how to close the gap
31:11 and engage him.
31:12 He needs him to stop.
31:13 See, there, finally he did a little bit.
31:15 - And this is a round where Chukwubaya's giving up the round
31:17 by just not being active.
31:19 He's not letting his hands go.
31:21 Not a whole lot got done, but...
31:24 - Chukwubaya's one of those guys
31:26 who wants to be set to a hard punch.
31:28 And Roldan moving around doesn't let him set, I guess.
31:31 - There's no sofa on the back of Roldan
31:34 in this main event.
31:56 - Who's to man tonight in this main event of the evening?
31:59 At times it's Roldan, at times it's Chukwubaya.
32:04 Got things started with an impressive finish
32:12 for Ismael Villarreal out of the Bronx.
32:15 Kareem Hackett, dominant against Clay Waterman.
32:19 And our main event, a very close fight.
32:23 [bell dings]
32:24 - Take your belt.
32:25 - Just watch the holding, guys.
32:36 - Round number nine for the third time
32:41 in Chukwubaya's career.
32:43 - Oh, a good combination, all the straight left legs.
32:48 - Come on, let go, let go.
32:49 Break!
32:50 [crowd shouting]
32:53 - Come on, let go.
32:57 Let go, guys.
32:58 Work.
32:59 [speaking Spanish]
33:00 - Chris, you talk about that beard of Roldan,
33:02 I think it's made of iron.
33:03 - Yeah, he's taking some really clean, hard shots
33:06 with pretty much no residual effect.
33:09 - Yep.
33:10 He's put on some miles tonight.
33:15 - Yeah, I mean, he's literally ripped through
33:18 the soles of his shoes.
33:19 - Yep.
33:20 Break!
33:21 - He needed a--he needed a pit change
33:27 in the middle rounds.
33:29 - You see how he just--
33:33 he didn't throw a punch there.
33:34 He just flew with his head first.
33:35 You see what I'm saying?
33:36 - And Chukwubaya didn't throw either.
33:37 He didn't counter.
33:38 He just--
33:39 - At this point, you know,
33:40 countering is a disoption.
33:42 How can you anticipate it?
33:43 Like, Roldan, you can't.
33:45 - Can't time him.
33:47 There's no rhythm to him.
33:48 It's just--it's a frenetic movement.
33:50 There's no rhyme or reason.
33:52 I don't even think he knows who he's hitting.
33:54 - Let go. Let go.
33:58 - How do you counter someone who's so unpredictable?
34:02 - Break! Break!
34:03 - Yeah, break.
34:04 - It was clear there that there was a lot of holding
34:06 being done by Roldan,
34:08 and the ref's gotta make--
34:09 gotta say something there.
34:11 You can see where Chukwubaya's struggling
34:13 to get his hands free.
34:14 - He's gotta let him go
34:15 in some of those close situations tonight, Paulie.
34:18 - He has, but if somebody's holding that strongly
34:20 to where it's--you gotta actually physically
34:22 make a grimace to pull your hand out,
34:25 that's a--that's a legit holding.
34:27 It's not even subtle.
34:29 - Yeah, I've noticed a shift
34:30 these last couple rounds, Roldan.
34:33 Doesn't look like he's looking to...
34:36 - Break! Break! Break!
34:37 - Really take control of the fight anymore.
34:39 He's--he's more using tactics to--
34:41 to stem the attack, slow things down.
34:44 - And could it be anything there?
34:46 Chukwubaya playing the champ?
34:47 - Could be.
34:48 I mean, he's playing some really good counters up top.
34:51 But you're seeing--
34:52 - This last round, right, Chris?
34:54 - I mean, every round he's playing it.
34:55 On good--
34:56 - Right on cue.
34:58 [crowd cheering]
35:01 [whistle blows]
35:04 - Chukwubaya's not gonna hold.
35:06 - Break! Break! Break! Break!
35:08 Break! Break!
35:10 - I guess the ref's not gonna win anyway.
35:12 - It's one way or the other.
35:14 [crowd shouting]
35:17 [whistle blows]
35:20 - Yeah, like, this movement here,
35:21 this--this isn't for anything anymore.
35:23 He's--he's not looking to engage.
35:27 - I'll tell you, we might wind up in an NMA fight
35:33 in a second.
35:34 - I know. A little guillotine.
35:36 [whistle blows]
35:38 - Chukwubaya's from Kazakhstan.
35:40 I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't know how to wrestle.
35:43 [crowd shouting]
35:46 - You gotta win this round, says Raul Camacho.
36:08 [crowd shouting]
36:11 - Come on, take a deep breath. Listen.
36:13 You gotta stay under control, all right?
36:15 Stay under control.
36:16 When we--we throwing the uppercut hook,
36:18 we gotta roll.
36:19 He's throwing a long, ugly hook.
36:21 Come here. Come here.
36:23 [whistle blows]
36:26 - Tenth and final round.
36:35 [bell dings]
36:36 Three minutes remaining.
36:39 Panazon Chukwubaya, red and black.
36:44 Light blue and white for Hugo Alberto Rodan.
36:48 Raul Camacho telling his fighter,
36:53 "You need to win this tenth and final round."
36:57 - I'll tell you, if Rodan doesn't win tonight,
37:05 I don't think anybody's ever gonna fight him.
37:07 [laughter]
37:09 At least if he wins, he's--
37:11 he can enforce to the rankings and kind of fight him.
37:14 I don't know if anybody's ever gonna want to fight him
37:16 after tonight's performance.
37:17 - Dangerous, dangerous guy.
37:19 Not fun to fight.
37:20 Not gonna look good against him either way.
37:22 - The risk and reward factor.
37:25 Rodan is high risk for anyone.
37:32 Including Panazon Chukwubaya tonight.
37:35 Rodan's last finish was September 13th of 2019.
37:51 - That was before COVID.
37:54 - That was before COVID.
37:55 - That was a whole different world.
37:57 - Literally. Literally.
38:00 - I don't think we're gonna see Rodan tonight.
38:02 He's thrown all but three punches in this round so far.
38:05 - Had the knockdown scored in round number one.
38:13 - Oh, I forgot about that.
38:14 It's been so long ago.
38:16 Like, so much has happened in the fight since then.
38:18 - I forgot too, Jim.
38:20 That's why we're a team.
38:23 That's why we're family.
38:24 I got you guys.
38:25 - Very interesting.
38:26 - Chukwubaya himself won't throw a punch, like,
38:28 unless Rodan holds still.
38:32 And Chukwubaya costs himself sometimes
38:35 the possibility of the round because he's not throwing.
38:37 He's allowing Rodan to move without having to pay for it.
38:42 - He might wager largely--
38:53 Nope, that's a slip.
38:55 Wager largely that Rodan won't stop moving
38:59 the final 35 seconds of this fight.
39:02 He likes to jump in with that right hand.
39:16 15 seconds from being in the hands of the judges.
39:22 - Oh, he's got it.
39:24 - This is for the bell.
39:31 - Rodan's saying bring it, but you gotta answer back.
39:35 - They go the distance!
39:40 - Rodan may have given this one away
39:48 in the last couple rounds, guys.
39:49 I don't know if you guys think,
39:51 "Oh, he's gonna kick his foot off that effort
39:53 in the last couple of rounds,"
39:54 and what, to me, has been a close fight all night.
39:57 He's got the knockdown around one.
39:58 That could help him out.
40:00 Could get interesting.
40:02 - He was disengaging those last three rounds.
40:06 And even though Chukwubaya wasn't doing a whole lot
40:13 in that round, Rodan was doing even less.
40:15 - Yeah.
40:16 Go back to the first.
40:19 And that big combination that caught Chukwubaya.
40:23 - Which could play into the--
40:27 I mean, it's definitely gonna play into the score,
40:30 but it could be meaningful.
40:32 - That was a shot he got hit with on the way down,
40:34 where he was actually down.
40:36 - There we see Rodan shaking Chukwubaya once again.
40:42 I mean, early on, this was a firefight.
40:46 There was a really--
40:49 the explosive rushes of Rodan
40:51 and the counterpunching of Chukwubaya.
40:54 As the fight wore on, Chukwubaya was able to land
40:56 some good counters from the outside.
40:58 Few and far between, but it seemed like it kind of
41:00 stemmed the flow of Rodan,
41:03 who started to use his movement more as a way
41:06 to disengage the offensive and counterpunching of Chukwubaya
41:10 rather than to use as a way to hide his offense.
41:14 - And like you said, champ, it seems like he gave away
41:17 a lot of those last couple rounds
41:19 by just not engaging enough. - Yeah.
41:21 - That big left hand landing late in the fight.
41:26 And now the judges will render their decision.
41:30 With this WBA continental North America
41:37 super lightweight belt on the line,
41:40 the official decision is in.
41:43 Is it Chukwubaya or is it Rodan?
41:47 Here is Mark Lichtenfeld.
41:49 [bell ringing]
41:52 - Ladies and gentlemen, after ten rough and rugged rounds,
41:55 we go to the scorecards.
41:57 Shami Shipman scores at 96-93.
42:01 Noventa y seis a noventa y tres.
42:04 Chukwubaya.
42:06 Dennis Devon scores at 97-92.
42:10 Noventa y siete a noventa y dos.
42:15 Rodan.
42:18 Joe Ware scores about 95-94.
42:24 Noventa y cinco a noventa y cuatro.
42:27 El ganador por decision dividida.
42:30 The winner by split decision.
42:32 And now the WBA continental Americas--
42:36 continental North Americas champion,
