00:00 A volcano erupted in southwest Iceland on Sunday. It's the second volcanic eruption
00:06 on the Reykjanes peninsula in less than a month.
00:10 The eruption, which began in the early hours, posed an immediate threat to a small nearby
00:15 fishing town.
00:16 But authorities said that the area north of Grindervik had been evacuated the previous
00:20 day over fears that an outbreak was imminent amid an uptick in seismic activity.
00:27 Early morning video footage from the site showed fountains of molten rock and bright
00:31 orange lava spewing from fissures in the ground.
00:35 Authorities have been building barriers of earth and rock in recent weeks to try to prevent
00:38 lava from reaching Grindervik, some 25 miles southwest of the capital Reykjavik.
00:44 But the latest eruption appeared to have penetrated the town's defences.
00:48 A spokesperson told public broadcaster RUV that, based on flow models, it could take
00:53 the lava a few hours to reach Grindervik if it continued to head towards the town.
00:58 The eruption marks the fifth in Reykjanes since 2021.
