We asked people can Leeds cope when it snows
Transcript
00:00 There's a yellow warning for snow and ice in Leeds tomorrow.
00:03 Yeah.
00:03 So we're asking people what they think about how the city copes, you know, when the weather hits,
00:10 like it's looking like doing tomorrow.
00:12 Yeah, it depends, I think, on the person.
00:15 Some people just can cope with it, some people can't.
00:18 I mean, especially driving.
00:20 Yeah, yeah.
00:21 Some people just drive too cautious, I think.
00:25 Yeah, will you be...
00:25 And cause more accidents in the snow and ice, so...
00:27 Yeah, will you be like changing your plans or anything?
00:30 Erm, not really, just trying not to go home.
00:32 Yeah, yeah.
00:33 That's the main thing.
00:34 Get a snowman built and that.
00:35 Yeah, that's it, kick it off, schools are shut.
00:38 Yeah, yeah.
00:38 Get them welled up and out we go.
00:41 Everybody seems to have a similar idea, really, of "Oh, we'll get there early",
00:47 but it's not just the roads, is it?
00:49 It's normally public transport's pretty bad as well.
00:51 So one thing leads to another.
00:54 So if trains or buses can't make it, then everybody ends up driving
00:59 and it gets really congested.
01:01 Erm...
01:02 But, I don't know how...
01:05 I mean, if places get gritted, then it's okay.
01:07 It depends if it settles and makes the ground icy, I guess.
01:12 Yeah, yeah.
01:13 But, I mean...
01:20 We've had worse snow in the past, but it's only getting more and more dramatic each year, isn't it?
01:26 Yeah, yeah.
01:27 Erm, personally I've seen that, well, it's very rare, but when it hits the mountains,
01:32 really, it's pretty bad.
01:34 And that's the truth, you know.
01:35 Especially if it comes down hard, you might get a gritter going down once,
01:40 you'd have to practically follow that gritter.
01:42 But after that, it still lays, there's no gritter after gritter,
01:46 so then you're struggling.
01:48 The amount of traffic that there is in Leeds now, if you get banged up behind a car,
01:53 you can be banged up for two or three miles just trying to get somewhere that takes ten minutes.
01:59 Things like that, you know.
02:01 I would say, personally, from my experience, it's not very well coordinated.
02:06 And another thing as well, around the nursing homes, it's not very well gritted on the path.
02:12 When I've been to Bradford, I've noticed that the men are out gritting the path.
02:16 Some people can actually get out in Leeds, not really.
02:21 So do you tend to just stay in?
02:23 Yeah, well, I mean, I don't want to fall.
02:25 I mean, we work at St James, it's an elderly ward,
02:29 and a lot of people go in with falls, obviously when it's isolated.
02:32 So they're not really given a chance to get out.
02:35 Everybody's got to eat.
02:37 Yeah, yeah.
02:38 It's got to do with the bits and the bobs.
02:40 Yeah, yeah.
