00:00 Appreciate it. I'm curious, you know,
00:01 produce obviously a really good
00:03 rebounding team, particularly
00:04 offensive end. That's something
00:05 you guys have struggled with.
00:06 What when you go back and watch
00:08 film and just kind of look at where
00:10 you can be better on the defensive boards?
00:13 What maybe stands out to you in that regard?
00:15 Well, you gotta block out.
00:18 I mean, I mean, that's.
00:21 Just basic basketball and the shot goes up.
00:23 We gotta put bodies on people.
00:25 I don't think our guards have
00:27 done a great job this year.
00:29 And you know, getting back in
00:31 we challenged three point shots.
00:33 We trying to head up the floor and a
00:36 lot of times in those long shots are taken.
00:41 You know their long rebounds and we're
00:43 just not picking some of those up and.
00:46 You know, I think Malik has gotta get better and.
00:51 And Mac has gotta get better in
00:53 terms of helping us rebound.
00:55 I think where is done a hell of a
00:58 job and rebound the ball and he
01:00 can't do it by himself.
01:01 We gotta do it as a team as a unit and.
01:04 You know we're gonna have to do it
01:07 tomorrow night because this is.
01:08 They got a big team and they
01:11 scrappy and they rebound the ball.
01:14 Mike and Zach Osterman.
01:16 Yeah, Mike, you know Peyton Sparks
01:18 has fallen out of the rotation a
01:20 little bit tonight or tomorrow against
01:22 Purdue. Is this a time for him with with
01:25 Zach you know you want you're looking
01:27 to get some 40 minutes minutes
01:29 defensively. You know a guy that can
01:31 with that size. Up guys, I'm not
01:33 going you know when I substitute
01:35 put people in the game.
01:37 Yes, I get question about how I saw.
01:40 You know, I mean I don't you know.
01:43 I'm not even going to discuss the
01:45 rotations in terms of how you know.
01:47 I mean if there's foul trouble,
01:49 sure you have to play him.
01:51 I mean he's a big body that bangs.
01:54 You know, I mean so.
01:57 Until you know we get into the
01:59 game and see how it's flowing.
02:01 I'm hoping I can keep you know Malik
02:04 and and big fella where out of foul
02:07 trouble you have a Edie's alone.
02:09 And you know if if they are,
02:11 then you know it's next man up.
02:13 Peyton's gotta play some.
02:14 If that happens.
02:18 Zach and Tom brew.
02:20 Mike, I guess I'm I'm curious
02:21 given they still have Edie.
02:23 They still have the backcourt.
02:24 What looks different to you as a
02:26 coach about Purdue last year to this year?
02:28 I think in particular it just seems
02:30 like there are much more dangerous
02:32 three point shooting team.
02:33 Some guys have maybe taken a step forward.
02:35 Some guys have joined that rotation.
02:37 Just just what?
02:38 What is different about the
02:39 challenge of this Purdue team?
02:40 Compared to a year ago,
02:42 think they shot low 30s from the
02:44 three they're shooting 39 this year.
02:45 That's the biggest.
02:46 That's the biggest challenge you
02:48 want to guard the three point line
02:50 and still deal with the three
02:52 and and still deal with Edie.
02:53 I mean.
02:54 He's getting more touches.
02:57 Probably more than he got last season and.
03:01 He's he's alone.
03:01 I've been I don't even know how to explain it.
03:04 I mean he's a big guy that's very skilled.
03:08 And and tough to deal with,
03:10 so we just gotta.
03:11 We gotta go in there and battle guys
03:14 for 40 minutes and see what happens.
03:16 Dominant Mason Mike,
03:17 since you got here,
03:18 you're the only coach in America
03:20 to beat Purdue three times and now
03:22 you played against a bunch of you.
03:24 You know all this stuff.
03:26 I know you deal with practice every
03:27 day as being the most important in
03:30 next game up and all that stuff.
03:31 But is the Indiana Purdue rivalry still
03:33 just mean just a little bit more to you?
03:36 It does.
03:37 I mean.
03:37 You know they want to beat us
03:39 as badly as we want to beat them.
03:42 I mean, it's just.
03:43 It's been that way.
03:44 I think it's great for college.
03:46 Basketball, you know they have their fan base.
03:50 And we have our fan base and.
03:53 You know it's.
03:54 When you go there,
03:55 it's the same way when they come here,
03:58 it's. Our fans are.
04:00 Unbelievable, I mean.
04:01 It don't matter who we put in a sibling.
04:04 Our fans have been great all these years
04:06 and that's not going to change.
04:09 Mason then Todd.
04:11 Coach, I kind of wanted to
04:13 follow up on that sentiment.
04:14 Now as a coach,
04:15 just being your third year in this rivalry,
04:18 you played in it.
04:19 What's different about preparing
04:20 for a matchup like this?
04:22 Knowing the history behind it as
04:24 a coach versus as a player?
04:25 Well, we we we take each game one
04:29 game at a time and we prepare pretty
04:32 much the same way in terms of who we
04:35 plan and you know that won't change.
04:37 I mean, we know we got a hell of an
04:40 opponent coming in here tomorrow.
04:43 And you know we gotta do all
04:45 the necessary things to win.
04:46 I mean, you gotta rebound the ball,
04:48 not turn it over and.
04:50 And you gotta share it and get good shots
04:53 and it helps if you can put the ball in
04:55 the hole so all those things.
04:58 Tie in together in terms of
05:00 you winning basketball games.
05:02 Todd to Mike Schumann.
05:04 Mike, when it came to Trey
05:06 Galloway the other night,
05:07 what did you like about his game?
05:09 What do you like about when he's
05:11 given the responsibility of kind of
05:13 running the team and how he handles that?
05:15 Well, I mean.
05:17 Nobody really has a response,
05:20 but I mean the way we play.
05:22 Everybody handles the basketball and.
05:25 You know what Gabe and him and X.
05:30 They probably handle it with our
05:32 perimeter play more than anybody.
05:34 Uhm?
05:36 Because we pretty much put
05:37 that put them in pick and roll,
05:39 so they shine a little bit more when
05:42 they're doing all the necessary things
05:44 when you run in pick and rolls or when
05:47 you feed in the post or getting in
05:49 a pass lane and getting steals
05:51 and things of that nature.
05:55 But no, I was happy and
05:56 pleased with how he played.
05:58 He had a great floor game and got
06:00 the ball where it needed to go
06:02 and he he made some shots.
06:05 Mike and Zion.
06:06 Yeah, hey coach, you mentioned
06:08 Cleo's rebounding.
06:09 I know he's been good all year and that,
06:12 but the last two games he's had 31 rebounds.
06:14 Is there anything he's changed or
06:16 you've talked to him about to kind of
06:18 get that next level from him?
06:20 Kind of rebounding out of position
06:21 and things like that?
06:23 Well, is is the second effort?
06:24 You know, I mean.
06:26 We first got him.
06:28 That.
06:29 That didn't even exist,
06:30 you know, in terms of him making.
06:34 Second and third efforts to try
06:36 to go get the basketball and a
06:38 lot of it was he just hadn't been
06:41 taught and and pushed to do it.
06:43 And. I mean, it's like night and day
06:47 from the time we got him into where
06:50 he is today in terms of. No going
06:53 hard understanding that you just
06:56 can't take possessions all.
06:58 You know, I mean he's.
07:00 I mean, but where he was,
07:02 but he's come a long way, man,
07:04 and it's kind of nice to see because
07:07 you know a lot of people just didn't
07:10 expect that and because he hadn't played and.
07:12 Uhm? And I just think there's
07:15 a lot of room for growth.
07:17 I mean, he's a young,
07:18 talented 7 footer man that does
07:20 a lot of good things for you.
07:22 Design the Jack.
07:23 Mike, you've got a lot of players now
07:27 that this may be their first time
07:29 playing this game. Kind of a newer
07:31 roster is what is the message to
07:33 those players and just how important
07:34 this game is, but also just how to
07:36 stay calm in a situation like this.
07:38 Every game is important for us.
07:40 That's how I approach it.
07:42 It's not just this game.
07:43 You know, we take it one game
07:48 at a time and we prepare.
07:50 Yes, we are young team hadn't been
07:53 together and a lot of these guys
07:55 hadn't been in big games like this.
07:58 And you know it's my job to get him ready and.
08:03 Calm down if they.
08:07 Come out not ready and.
08:09 And see where it leads us, man,
08:10 but. You know you can't ask
08:12 for bigger games in this.
08:14 I mean, it's just like I said,
08:15 this is what fans like to see.
08:18 It's good for college basketball and.
08:22 We just see what happens tomorrow night.
08:25 Jack and then Zach Osterman.
08:26 Mike, some of Trey's shooting
08:29 percentages are down this year,
08:30 particularly from the three point
08:31 line and free throw line.
08:33 Have you been able to maybe figure
08:35 out why that's been the case from
08:37 last year to this year and how have
08:39 you helped him through that? I
08:41 wish I could really answer that and
08:44 tell you why he's not shooting
08:46 like he did like I don't.
08:48 It's hard to explain.
08:50 You know, I think as a coach,
08:51 all you can do is to keep encouraging.
08:54 Pat him on the button.
08:56 They say the next one is going to go in.
08:59 You know.
09:00 That's all you can do and
09:01 continue to work in practice.
09:03 Zach last minute.
09:06 Mike, sorry, just one other question.
09:08 Just kind of about Purdue
09:09 last year this year.
09:10 It seems like they figured out how to make.
09:13 Some of those two big lineups with
09:14 Edie work just a little bit more.
09:16 It seemed like sometimes last year
09:17 they struggled to play another big next
09:19 to him, but obviously Trey Kaufman
09:20 rent starts with him a lot and first
09:22 is still on the rotation or the things
09:23 you've seen from those other bigs
09:25 that maybe sort of make again when
09:27 Purdue wants to go with with two
09:30 true kind of forward centers in the
09:32 lineup work a little bit better than last year.
09:34 Well, I just think that they.
09:37 The shooters have allowed them
09:39 to do a lot of that.
09:42 Uhm? In terms of playing two bigs and.
09:46 You know, both bigs are very
09:49 demanding on the block.
09:51 You know, Kaufman is.
09:54 He's tough on his block when
09:55 he catches the ball.
09:56 He's very aggressive in in terms
09:58 of scoring the basketball and he's
10:00 a hell of an offensive rebounder,
10:03 so it hadn't hurt him at all because
10:05 they got guys on the perimeter
10:08 that have made some shots for him.
10:10 And that's the key with any team.
10:12 You know you make shots,
10:14 man life you look good life.
10:15 Look life is life is great if you
10:18 could make him and you know we've
10:20 had our ups and downs this year
10:22 in terms of making them.
10:23 But when we do make up a
