Surstremming (Swedish. surströmming (pronounced surstremmin) is a Swedish national product, which is canned pickled Baltic herring (herring).
Surstreming is famous for its pungent, nauseating smell for many people, so it is not recommended to serve it indoors or in crowded places. In Sweden itself, surstremming is considered a delicacy and a worthy treat, although even in Sweden it is not customary to eat it every day.

True connoisseurs of surstromming eat it without side dish, straight from the jar. Surstromming has a salty taste and emits a sharp unpleasant odor. Swedes eat it with boiled potatoes, tomatoes, raw onions or bread and butter. Surstremming can also be used to make sandwiches. The most common drinks consumed with surstremming are beer, schnapps, milk or the Swedish equivalent of kvass — yulmust. Some gourmets eat fish with lingonberries and drink milk. Most often, the fish is put on bread and butter, sprinkled with finely chopped onions; it is advisable to drink it with cold beer or schnapps.
