00:13 Glory Balega of PTV Cordillera is in the center of the news.
00:17 We can now confidently say that we are already out of the woods. The outbreak is over.
00:26 That is the good news of Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong.
00:30 According to the mayor, the case of acute gastroenteritis or diarrhea in Baguio City is only at the endemic level or normal occurrences.
00:40 The outbreak occurred from December 26, 2023 until January 13, 2024 and affected more than 3,000 people.
00:50 According to the joint epidemiologic investigation by the Baguio City Health Services Office, Department of Health CAR and Epidemiology Bureau,
00:59 the pathogen that caused the outbreak is known as norovirus.
01:03 The pathogen is derived from contaminated deep wells where bulk water distributors get supplies to households and food establishments.
01:14 Twelve deep wells or water sources were found to be positive for total coliform and seven of them were also positive for E. coli, an indicator of fecal contamination.
01:26 Resulting from a waterborne source, which is water sources have been contaminated.
01:34 The highly probable chain of transmission that resulted in the outbreak,
01:38 the bulk water delivery service tracks distributing to the households is one of the probable chain of transmission that has been documented by the epidemiology bureau.
01:51 The possibility of human to human transmission or person to person contact explains the spread of the infection.
01:59 The city government issued a cease and desist order to the deep well and water delivery services that tested positive for coliform bacteria.
02:08 The cleaning of the tanks, pipes and equipment was ordered and negative tests should be done before they are opened again.
02:16 According to Mayor Magalong, the people who tested positive for deep well and water sources will be visited again to find out how the contamination happened.
02:26 We're now shifting to the investigation on the liability and culpability of the water delivery services.
02:35 Meaning, we're now inspecting their sources, their tracks, equipment, and their processes and records.
02:48 The Baguio LGU is now focusing on changing the city sanitation code,
02:53 forming a new safe water ordinance, and implementing a stricter policy for water service providers.
03:01 Glory Balegan, for the people.
