00:00 In a significant development, according to the Delhi Police, the individual who is responsible
00:07 for creating a deepfake video featuring the popular actress Rashmika Mandara has been
00:12 apprehended.
00:13 The deepfake video, which surfaced on social media in November last year, depicted British
00:17 Indian influencer Zara Patel entering an elevator in a black outfit.
00:21 However, through the use of advanced deepfake technology, Ms Patel's face was seamlessly
00:25 morphed into that of Rashmika Mandara.
00:28 Reacting to the disturbing incident, Rashmika Mandara had expressed her dismay, describing
00:32 the ordeal as "extremely scary".
00:34 She emphasized the vulnerability that individuals face due to the misuse of technology, saying
00:38 that "something like this is honestly extremely scary not only just for me, but also for each
00:43 one of us who today is vulnerable to much harm because of the technology that is being
00:48 misused."
00:49 The widespread circulation of the deepfake video prompted the Centre to issue an advisory
00:53 on social media platforms, highlighting the legal provisions covering deepfakes and outlining
00:58 potential penalties for their creation and dissemination.
01:01 Union Minister Rajiv Chandrasekhar also took a proactive approach, meeting with social
01:06 media platforms in last December to assess their progress in combating the misinformation
01:11 and deepfakes.
01:12 He emphasized that advisories would be issued in coming days to ensure 100 per cent compliance
01:16 by these platforms.
01:21 Deepfakes, a form of synthetic media created using artificial intelligence, employs sophisticated
01:26 algorithms to manipulate both the visual and audio elements.
01:30 The term gained prominence in 2017 when a Reddit user introduced the platform for sharing
01:34 manipulated videos.
01:36 Since then, deepfake technology has evolved, posing a potential threat as a weapon for
01:40 cybercrime to disrupt and damage the reputation of individual companies or even governments.
01:46 In response to the growing concern, Union IT Minister S. Srinivasanav had also recently
01:50 announced that notices are sent to all social media companies, directing them to take necessary
01:55 steps to identify and remove the disinformation from their platforms.
02:00 The arrest of the individual behind the Rashmika Mandana deepfake video marks a significant
02:04 step in ongoing effort to address the misuse of technology.
02:08 As the government continues to take measures to combat deepfakes, the incident serves as
02:12 a stark reminder of the challenges posed by the rapidly advancing digital manipulation
02:16 tools.
