00:00 The government of America is announcing that it will be the number one importer of rice in the whole world of the Philippines this year.
00:08 We have the first news, Katrina Son.
00:11 The Philippines is expected to be the first as the top rice importer in the whole world.
00:20 This is the result of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's assessment.
00:24 Based on the report of the USDA Economic Research Service, 3.8 million metric tons is expected to be imported by 2024.
00:34 Next to the Philippines are China, Indonesia, European Union, Nigeria and Iraq.
00:40 The GMA Integrated News is also trying to get a reaction on this from the Agriculture Department.
00:46 In a three-year plan presented by Agriculture Secretary Francisco Chulaurel Jr.,
00:51 he said the country will need to reduce the farm output by P1.3 trillion to help reduce the wastage of agricultural products and ensure food security in the country.
01:06 It is also included in the plan that to irrigate the 1.2 hectares of rice, P1.2 trillion in capital spending will be needed.
01:15 No major post-harvest facility was funded by the government in the last 40 years.
01:22 It's all small, which is actually irrelevant or useless.
01:28 So that's why we need really to fund these projects.
01:33 But we cannot build small, we have to build bigger.
01:37 I mean we have three actually, three designs, small, medium and large.
01:41 Not mini.
01:42 The construction of rice mill warehouse complex to reduce 15% in losses due to the lack of post-harvest facilities will take several years and will cost P90 billion.
01:56 But if these will start to move, it will save P10.7 billion or 23 days of rice inventory equivalent to 10% of rice imports based on data from last year.
02:10 Despite this, the public does not have to worry because the country has sufficient rice supply based on the inventory made last December and this month.
02:20 The deliveries from other countries are included here.
02:24 Laurel also encouraged rice producing countries like Thailand and Vietnam to experience high prices of rice.
02:34 This is the first news. Katrina Son for GMA Integrated News.
