00:00 No fighter jet, missile or French rocket flies before being tested in the wind turbines of the National Airspace Research Office in Maudan, southeast of France,
00:10 essential to validate the aerodynamics of any flying vehicle.
00:14 The site of the National Airspace Research Study Office, National Airspace Research Study Office,
00:20 is nestled in the hollow of the Morienne Valley to take advantage of the hydraulic energy to make the world's largest sonic blower, S1EMA, capable of reproducing a flight at a speed close to Mach 1, 1200 km / h.
00:33 In this wind cathedral, the aircraft model or the sensor-mounted engine is placed in the center of a 400-meter long hub and a diameter of up to 24 meters.
00:42 A 15-meter diameter fan blows up to 10 tons of air per second to generate air flow.
00:48 To power it, the energy required is considerable and comes from two lakes located 800 meters above, a water drain overloads the mountain and powers two hydraulic turbines at a rate of 15 m3 per second.
00:59 "We reach a power of 88 MW / MW, the tenth of that of a nuclear reactor," explains Pascal Crozier, director of the wind turbines of Maudan.
01:09 A second wind turbine, S2EMA, allows supersonic speeds up to Mach 3.
01:15 Blowing models or missiles are tested there.
01:18 Two other wind turbines, S3EMA and S4A, operate with compressed air.
01:24 The first allows Mach 6 to reach 7,400 km / h, therefore exceeding the hypersonic threshold.
01:31 The second goes beyond Mach 10, 12,350 km / h, at which speed the hypersonic gliders like the French Vemax, these weapons in development in the United States as in China.
01:42 This strategic installation, both for nuclear discharge and for decarbonization of aviation, is originally a war loot, pieces and plans, recovered by the French in the Austrian Tyrol in 1945.
01:53 And if a collapse of the ground and some parts of the buildings threatened the Septuagénaire site, an investment of 20 million euros in 2016, four years of work and 4,000 cubic meters of concrete injected up to 50 meters deep allowed to ensure its durability and face the workload.
02:09 Between civil and military projects, we have activity for at least four or five years, according to Pascal Crozier, who owes 22 jobs to lend a hand to the 150 windmills employees.
02:19 The office broke its own order record in 2022, which rose to 162.9 million euros, plus 7% compared to 2021, of which 59 for the only general direction of the DGA armament and 15.6 for the general direction of the DGAC civil aviation.
02:36 About a third of customers come from abroad, mostly from Europe but also from South Korea.
