Iowa coach interview

00:00 And I think that's a great. Go to questions for coach. On that last pass. Did was paint
00:21 going to call a timeout or was it just the ball? You know, his plan was to catch and
00:27 shoot it. You know, maybe could have called timeout. It was a little deep. It was a good
00:35 pass by the Sunday. Jim years last drive. Did you want to switch or what kind of did
00:44 you see? It was a ghost screen and it was a great read by Peyton to switch. He just
00:49 needed to jump out to his left hand a little bit more. Obviously. Here is one for 6145
00:55 at halftime and picked up in the second half. Is that just good? That's what he does. You
00:59 got to give him credit. You know, we have to do a better job there. That was disappointing
01:04 because you know he's the guy and we let him kind of dictate coming down the stretch without
01:10 especially after the first one. You got to do a better job there. It seemed like a lot
01:17 of the offensive possessions got pretty late into their downplay into the shot clock. Is
01:22 that just a byproduct of the way Maryland plays defense? Yeah, you know, they're switching
01:26 everything or top block and everything. So you get, you know, you probably know there's
01:29 more dribbling than passing and cutting. That's the only way you can break that defense down.
01:37 And then you got to move it side to side and you got to take longer. You know, I thought
01:42 that's where Brock was really good for a while there. And then of course, you know, he fell
01:47 the one time and then obviously we didn't handle the pressure very well. That's that's
01:51 disappointing. In a nutshell, where this game was lost for you and won for them, how would
01:56 you describe it? Well, we started fouling too much in the second half. They were in
01:59 the double bonus early. You know, Owen is really good. You know, we got to get him to
02:06 the point where he can, you know, use his body and not pick up those fouls and get fouled
02:10 too. We need him out there. I know you've spoken highly of this team's resilience. Peyton,
02:16 I mean, he's pretty distraught, you know, after the game. Yeah, of course he is. We
02:22 all are, you know, and you got to be able to learn from it. You know, you break it down.
02:30 We obviously made a ton of mistakes. What could we have done differently as coaches?
02:37 What could we have done differently as players? I mean, that's what you do. You break it down
02:41 and then you work on that. And then you have a game plan and you go on the road, play a
02:47 tough team and hopefully we'll play better. You know, we were not in sync, I think, most
02:54 of the game. I think that was obvious. We had a chance, I think, to get a lead in the
02:59 first half. We had a lead, but it wasn't much. And you know, you can't turn the ball over
03:05 14 times.
03:07 You always talk about not letting your teams get too high or too low. I mean, obviously
03:11 Tony and Peyton are distraught and understandably so, just how everything happened. As a coach,
03:15 how do you kind of find the words to encourage them and kind of keep the focus where it needs
03:19 to be?
03:20 Well, I think you got to do a couple of things. You have to be honest with them. You know,
03:25 not – I mean, you got to understand, okay, we did some things that are just unacceptable.
03:32 You know, and I'll take the blame for that. But we knew they were going to press. They'd
03:38 been pressing. You just can't turn the ball over and then let them score in three seconds.
03:42 We turned it over three times and they know that. They feel bad about it. We all feel
03:51 bad about it. So we turned the ball over and we let Jameer take the game over.
03:57 In the second straight game, you guys didn't have a field goal late. And this one seemed
04:04 different because of the fouls. Both teams almost became a foul shooting contest down
04:08 the stretch. Is that more what this one was?
04:10 Yeah, it was one of those games. I mean, the officials called it pretty closely. We were
04:16 in the bonus. They were in the bonus early. And, you know, that's just how the game went.
04:24 Two more questions. Coach, you guys failed to make a field goal in the last 545.
04:28 We just talked about that. It was all free throws.
04:30 In a game like this where the game is close, who were you looking to go to?
04:36 We ran a really good play for Ben and, you know, we ran a really good play for Peyton
04:41 and it didn't happen.
04:44 Sir, just really quick, is there a couple updates on – is Patrick on a minute restriction
04:49 right now?
04:50 He is. He gave us a big lift in the first half. In the second half, you know, I thought
04:56 he was struggling a little bit. I didn't go back to him. I'm really worried about
05:02 having him at 100% moving forward. I don't want him to tweak that thing and then can't
05:09 play Saturday and then it lingers on him. It's still, you know, all kinds of different
05:15 colors and he's still got some discomfort. He doesn't have his explosion. So, the fact
05:21 that he was able to come in and give us two buckets was great.
