Driving along Kosciuszko Road just south of Cooma, NSW, Tim the Yowie Man stops at the large steel sculpture known as the ‘Snowy River Sphere’. Spotting the artwork means a Snowy Mountains adventure isn’t too far away.

00:00 No matter what season you visit the Snowy Mountains, one of the most familiar roadside
00:05 landmarks between Cooma and Jindabyne is this sculpture that I'm currently standing inside.
00:14 Some call it the Steel Ball, others in mid-winter after a snowfall, the Snowball, but its official
00:20 name is Snowy Sphere.
00:23 Commissioned in 2011 by the Snowy River Shire Council to mark the gateway to the Snowy River
00:28 Shire, its design has close connections with our beloved snowies.
00:33 In fact it is made entirely of recycled steel beams originally used in the construction
00:39 of the ski tube back in the 1980s.
00:43 Meanwhile these flowing lines represent the ski runs, rivers and indigenous pathways of
00:49 the Snowy Mountains.
00:51 Finally the spherical shape doesn't just represent a giant snowball, rather also the striking
00:58 boulder strewn landscape of this region.
01:03 Along with the Eagle and Nest at the National Arboretum in Canberra, Snowy Sphere is arguably
01:09 one of the best known works of South Coast sculptor Richard Moffat and I have to say
01:15 it's probably my favourite.
