Inside the Biden Campaign’s ‘Blame Trump’ Strategy on Abortion

The first event of President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign to feature both him and Vice President Kamala Harris on the same stage is one piece of a broader strategy to frame abortion access as a clear dividing line between the parties in 2024. A year and a half after the Dobbs decision shook up the political landscape, Republicans are still struggling to respond to the situation.

00:00 Did anyone think? Did anyone think that this is where America was going in 2024? I could
00:08 go on. But look, let there be no mistake. The person most responsible for taking away
00:15 this freedom in America is Donald Trump.
00:19 Listen, listen to what he says. Trump says he's proud that he overturned Roe v. Wade.
00:29 He said, and I quote, there has to be punishment for the women exercising the reproductive
00:34 freedom. He describes the Dobbs decision as a miracle. But for American women, it's a
00:40 nightmare. In the past year, Trump himself endorsed a federal ban promising to lead the
00:47 charge. God love him.
00:51 And that means even if you live in a state where extremist Republicans are not in charge
00:56 of the state government, your right to choose your right to privacy is still at risk. But
01:02 as long as I have power of the presidency, know this. If Congress were to pass a national
01:07 abortion ban, I will veto it. I will veto it.
01:15 I don't think this court and the MAGA Republicans have any clue about the power of women in
01:20 America. I don't think they have any clue. But they're about to find out.
01:30 There's one other person who doesn't have a clue about the power of women in America.
01:34 It's Donald Trump. But I promise you in 2024, he's going to find out about the power of
01:40 y'all.
01:41 We watch. And let's remember, it was Donald Trump and his Supreme Court who ripped away
01:52 the rights and freedoms of women in America. It'll be Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and all
01:57 of you who are going to restore those rights for the women of America.
02:01 Donald Trump is betting we won't. You won't vote on this issue. But guess what? He's betting
02:11 we won't hold him responsible either for taking away the rights. He's betting you're going
02:16 to stop caring.
02:21 By the way, that you'll get distracted and discouraged and stay home. Well, guess what?
02:29 I'm betting he's wrong. I'm betting you're the one forget. I'm betting you won't stop
02:34 caring.
02:35 And you won't get distracted. And I'm betting come November, we will vote on a record numbers.
02:43 And when we do that, we'll teach Donald Trump a valuable lesson. Don't mess with women in
02:54 America unless you want to get the benefit.
02:56 [cheers and applause]
02:57 (audience cheering)
