00:00 "I mean, I had a dialect coach just to help me not sound like Elvis."
00:03 Austin Butler is moving beyond his Elvis era.
00:07 During an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the actor revealed he needed
00:10 a dialect coach to help him get rid of his Elvis accent after three years of filming.
00:15 "I mean, I had a dialect coach just to help me not sound like Elvis."
00:19 Back in February 2023, while on The Graham Norton Show, Austin revealed all his singing
00:23 from Elvis also destroyed his vocal cords.
00:26 "From all the singing, I probably have destroyed my voice a bit.
00:30 You know, my vocal cords, it's a lot raspier now.
00:34 It really made me self-conscious for a second because I thought, 'Am I being phony?
00:37 Is this not my voice?'
00:41 And then I thought, 'Oh, I'd have to think consciously to not talk how I am right now.'
00:46 But my voice sounds different when I talk to my dog or when I talk to my dad or when
00:49 I'm here right now.
00:51 You know, we all have different bits of ourselves that we're releasing.
00:55 But when I was really questioning it, I thought, 'Okay, for one thing, I'm older now.'
00:59 Maybe sometimes I have a Southern twang, but I don't think this is Southern.
01:03 If I tried to sound like Elvis, I would sound very different right now."
01:09 Apart from the change in his voice, though, he says the years of filming also changed
01:13 who he was as a person.
01:15 "I mean, I was just trying to remember who I was.
01:18 I was trying to remember what I like to do.
01:22 All I thought about was Elvis for three years.
01:24 And then I had that week off.
01:26 And then I flew to London.
01:29 And then at that time, it's COVID, so I'm quarantined for 10 days.
01:32 I thought, 'All right, just pour all this energy into learning about World War II now.'
01:37 How would Elvis fly a plane?"
01:40 He goes on to thank Tom Hanks, who is an executive producer on Masters of the Air, for getting
01:44 him into the war drama that helped him find a new project after his Elvis movie.
01:48 "I was having dinner with Tom Hanks in Australia.
01:52 And he was sort of joking, saying, 'You're going to lose your mind when you finish this
01:56 three years of your life focused on this one thing.
02:00 You're going to have to find something else to jump right into right afterward.'
02:03 And the other producer, Pat McCormick, who is a good friend of mine, he said, 'Well,
02:08 Tom, find him something to do.'
02:09 And then Tom said, 'Well, I got this World War II thing I'm working on.'
02:12 I just happened to have it here."
02:14 "Yeah, it's just right here."
02:15 "Yeah."
