00:00:20 We are so thankful that the vast majority of Canadians support
00:00:34 Canadian chicken farmers and the supply management system.
00:00:39 When consumers see the Raised by a Canadian Farmer brand,
00:00:42 they can know that that chicken was raised in a healthy, safe environment.
00:00:47 Happy birds are healthy birds, and healthy birds provide a healthy food source for Canadians.

00:05:55 Hello, everyone, and welcome to Oakville, Ontario,
00:06:03 and the 2024 Pre-Novice Novice Challenge event.
00:06:06 I'm Ted Barton, along with Joni McPhail.
00:06:08 This is your hometown, your home arena,
00:06:11 a Pre-Novice Novice Challenge event.
00:06:13 Tell us a little bit about what we can expect this week.
00:06:15 Well, we're gonna see the young up-and-coming stars
00:06:18 and future stars from across the country
00:06:21 coming here to compete over the next four days,
00:06:23 pairs dance, men's, women's,
00:06:25 and it's gonna be really exciting.
00:06:27 This is such a fun event because this is the first time
00:06:31 many of these athletes have been at an event of this scope
00:06:34 and this big.
00:06:36 The rinks are all dressed up.
00:06:37 We've been setting up for two days.
00:06:39 It's a beautiful facility, if I do say so myself.
00:06:42 Just because it is our home rink here in Oakville.
00:06:45 And we're delighted to have everybody here to enjoy it.
00:06:48 It's so much fun watching these young skaters come in.
00:06:50 Some of them are returning because they were Pre-Novice last year,
00:06:53 Novice this year, but some are brand new to this,
00:06:55 and big eyes, open eyes, and they see the rink board advertising
00:06:58 and the lights on and the kiss and cry,
00:07:01 and it's really wonderful to see.
00:07:03 And you're right, it is our future,
00:07:05 and it's really fun to watch, to see what we have.
00:07:07 Absolutely, and there's over 200 athletes here.
00:07:09 But even more amazing, there's about 130 coaches here.
00:07:13 And many of these coaches are at an event like this
00:07:16 for their first time, and this is really exciting.
00:07:18 This is where you get bitten by the bug a little bit more
00:07:21 and a little bit more and want to keep progressing
00:07:23 with your development and career.
00:07:25 Yeah, and juniors and seniors, you tend to see the coaches there.
00:07:28 The same coaches pretty much all the time,
00:07:30 but at Pre-Novice and Novice, we're seeing coaches
00:07:32 clear across the country from small and big communities as well.
00:07:35 So it's a lot of fun. Let's get going.
00:07:37 And through the week, we're going to bring you updates
00:07:40 on some past Pre-Novice and Novice champions,
00:07:43 what's happening at the competition.
00:07:45 But before that even happens, let's talk about
00:07:47 what's happening around the world in skating.
00:07:50 - You start. - Okay.
00:07:52 Congratulations, Canada, on winning your team bronze medal
00:07:56 at the Youth Olympics.
00:07:58 Yeah, great job. That looked like a lot of fun.
00:08:00 It actually was, and I did my homework. I was up watching.
00:08:04 - Oh, my gosh. - So it's an interesting event
00:08:06 because only two of the teams fielded pair teams.
00:08:09 So there was only two pair teams.
00:08:11 So to even out the field, they dropped the lowest score
00:08:14 from each of those two teams, which was Canada and the US,
00:08:17 to even out the scoring for everybody else.
00:08:20 In the end, Korea took the gold, the US silver, and Canada the bronze.
00:08:24 Kaya Ryder had a great free skate
00:08:26 because she did not have a good free skate in the individual event,
00:08:29 but redeemed herself.
00:08:31 Yeah, and it's really interesting. All those skaters that represented Canada
00:08:34 at the Youth Olympics were here at Pre-Novice Challenge event
00:08:38 just a few years ago.
00:08:40 So it's so interesting to see their next stage of development.
00:08:43 That's correct.
00:08:45 And then we move on to also happening is the Four Continents Championship.
00:08:48 Yeah, there's some great skates there today.
00:08:50 Oh, there was. The men's and women's event--
00:08:53 I mean, Maddie Skies has had a good skate.
00:08:55 She had some issues on some of her landings.
00:08:58 She landed the jumps but squeaked them out
00:09:01 and ended up in 9th place. That's all that could muster.
00:09:04 The skating was so strong, and same in the men's event.
00:09:07 Wesley Chu had a fabulous skate, but such strong short programs
00:09:11 compared to SCI, maybe when it was the beginning of the season
00:09:14 and we watched a lot of these athletes.
00:09:16 Yeah, Wesley had an 83.7-something, I think,
00:09:19 and he sits currently in 6th place, I believe it is.
00:09:22 Or maybe it's 5th. 5th place. Ah, yes.
00:09:24 And that is a fantastic result.
00:09:26 That's an amazing result.
00:09:28 It's just to see these free programs to see if they're that much more prepared for that.
00:09:33 So we'll keep you informed as to what's happening in the Four Continents
00:09:36 throughout the week, but we move on with the Pre-Novice Novice.
00:09:39 We do. Before we get to that, though, since we are in Oakville,
00:09:43 a couple things I'd like to point out.
00:09:45 If you do come to the rink, Oakville skaters participated in a poster contest
00:09:50 and they've created some really fun posters to wish the athletes good luck
00:09:54 and welcome them to Oakville, so we've posted those around the rink.
00:09:57 We want to keep them interested in the event.
00:09:59 And then some Oakville fun facts.
00:10:01 So, in 1827, William Chisholm bought 960 acres of land
00:10:08 at the mouth of 16 Mile Creek for about $4,000.
00:10:11 Gee, that was a good investment.
00:10:13 That was an amazing investment.
00:10:15 And for anybody who's here visiting in Oakville,
00:10:17 also Niagara Falls is only an hour away,
00:10:20 and if this is the closest you're going to get,
00:10:22 it's a great opportunity to take the drive down and see Niagara Falls.
00:10:26 And the weather is good.
00:10:27 I know you're going to get to the weather report, but the roads are dry.
00:10:29 You can do it.
00:10:30 Oh, absolutely. It's definitely worth the trip.
00:10:33 And we'll have more Oakville fun information coming up,
00:10:36 like my favorite places to shop.
00:10:38 All right. Before the weather, sponsors.
00:10:41 Carry on.
00:10:42 We're going to thank our sponsors, the Chicken Farmers of Canada,
00:10:45 Corporate Travel, and CanadaFlowers.ca.
00:10:49 Thank you so much for supporting skating throughout the season.
00:10:52 It's been great.
00:10:53 Of course, we thank them at all the competitions
00:10:55 and they help support skating from coast to coast.
00:10:58 Now the weather.
00:10:59 Okay.
00:11:00 Okay. Vancouver is 11 degrees, balmy and nice, but light rain and--
00:11:04 It was 14 yesterday.
00:11:05 I know. It's the flowers. The crocuses should be blooming any moment.
00:11:08 No, they're drowned with the rivers, with the atmospheric rivers.
00:11:12 Can I just talk about Calgary weather?
00:11:14 Yes, please.
00:11:15 Okay. It's 6 degrees going up to 8 degrees.
00:11:17 Did you not like us?
00:11:19 Like, what's the deal? 8 degrees.
00:11:22 Yeah, 45 below zero when we were there.
00:11:24 It's 8 now. Thank you. We're out of town.
00:11:26 Shanghai, it's 5 degrees in rain.
00:11:28 That's where Four Continents is, so much of the same weather.
00:11:31 And here, it's 2 with a light drizzle, about 5 degrees out,
00:11:34 not as cold as Calgary, and welcoming everyone to Oakville.
00:11:38 Okay. Well, that's a pretty good wrap.
00:11:39 Anything else you have to say?
00:11:40 Not for now.
00:11:41 We're going to watch some future skaters, future stars,
00:11:44 future champions here at the Pre-Novice Novice Challenge event
00:11:48 here in Oakville.
00:11:49 And all the action starts right now.
