00:02 First of all, how can I be a nanny? I'll be a manny.
00:04 It's time for Usher's Confessions.
00:06 The 45-year-old singer takes to the club Shae Shae Podcast January 31st to clarify the rumor that he was once Beyonce's nanny.
00:15 Explaining that while he was a young, aspirational R&B star in Atlanta,
00:19 he would sometimes watch over the soon-to-be superstar when she was 12 and he was 14.
00:25 However, he maintains that while he might have helped keep an eye on the future 32-time Grammy winner
00:30 and chaperone the girl group she was part of at the time, he was never formally her nanny.
00:35 Will you be Beyonce's nanny?
00:37 First of all, how can I be a nanny? I'll be a manny.
00:39 Manny, I bet you know what I mean.
00:40 No, no, I wouldn't be Beyonce's nanny.
00:42 No, Darryl Simmons, he had a group by the name of the Dolls.
00:47 And they came to Atlanta for the first time.
00:50 This is before Destiny's Child became Destiny's Child.
00:53 And I think I looked over them while they were doing something in the house.
00:57 I had to watch over them because I was like the authority.
01:00 Because I guess I was the teenager at the time.
01:02 But no, I wasn't a nanny. You know what I'm saying? No.
01:04 But you were just overseeing them, making sure they ain't breaking nothing.
01:06 Making certain that they didn't get in no trouble in the house at the time.
01:10 The songwriter has found himself caught up in these rumors ever since his appearance on the UK radio show
01:16 Capital Breakfast with Roman Kemp last year,
01:19 where he dished that he's known Queen B since they were pre-teens,
01:22 saying, "Fun fact, I knew Beyonce when she was 12 years old.
01:26 She used to be in a group by the name of the Dolls.
01:29 I don't know if I could consider myself their nanny, but I had a time where I had to watch the Dolls."
01:34 And Usher now shares that ever since then, he knew Sasha Fierce had something special.
01:39 Beyonce had a talent and also, too, a brilliance and a brightness that was much different.
01:46 And it was actually Frank Gatson who helped me see it.
01:50 He worked with me at the time. He was my choreographer, and then he started working with them.
01:54 And he'd always told me, "Man, she's really special. You need to keep your eye on her."
01:58 I was like, "Man, she is. She is really special."
02:01 The dancer goes on to tell podcast host Shannon Sharp that he's in awe of how far Beyonce has come
02:07 and that he's remained close friends with her and her husband, Jay-Z.
02:11 And really great for my sister, man, to see that she's done so amazing
02:15 and continued to thrive and just get bigger and better.
02:20 And just, you know, just, I mean, whether it's musically or in our life or creativity, all of it, man.
02:25 Even sharing that Jay-Z was the one to deliver him the exciting news
02:29 that he had been chosen to perform at the 2024 Super Bowl.
02:33 Jay-Z, he reached out to me personally.
02:35 Right.
02:36 And it was--
02:39 So what was that call? So what was that call? Like, okay, phone rings, you look down, it's old Jay.
02:43 I mean, you probably got it in your phone, it's old, but Jay, you pick up the phone, you're like,
02:47 "Man, I wonder what he's calling me for." Okay, here's the conversation. Now what?
02:50 I'm like, "So what's up?" He was like, "It's time."
02:55 Yeah. I mean, yeah, it is 5 o'clock in the morning. It's time.
02:59 What you mean, it's not, but it was early.
03:02 Right.
03:03 And he said, you know, "This is the magic moment. This is the Michael moment," actually, how he put it.
03:09 And, you know, "Are you ready?"
03:11 Yeah, man, it was an incredible moment, man.
