In today's dental school vlog, I give you some tips on how I study in dental school! I am a first-year dental student and I'm showing you a couple days in my life! We learned how to do subgingival scaling, ultrasonic scaling, and prophylaxis treatments!

00:02 Good morning guys and welcome back to my channel.
00:11 And today we're doing another dental school vlog.
00:14 It's about 7.17 right now.
00:16 I have to leave in about five minutes for class.
00:18 It's currently Wednesday and this morning
00:20 we just have a bunch of class.
00:22 I got a little quiz.
00:23 And then this afternoon we are practicing
00:25 our subgingival scaling.
00:27 That's for my perio class.
00:29 And we get to scale like fake calculus off the teeth.
00:33 And calculus is not math in this video.
00:35 If you're not in the dental field at all,
00:37 calculus is calcified plaque.
00:39 So when plaque stays on your teeth too long,
00:42 it calcifies, aka hardens and turns into calculus,
00:46 also known as tartar.
00:48 So yeah, we're practicing that
00:49 because we have a practical coming up in a couple weeks
00:52 where we have to scale that off.
00:53 Basically they just want us to be using
00:54 all the tools correctly and make sure we get
00:56 all of the calculus off the teeth.
00:58 So I am packing up my lunch.
01:02 This week I made these really fun Mediterranean bowls.
01:05 I had like ground turkey.
01:07 And then I also packed like this like
01:09 green goddess dressing, hummus.
01:11 I roasted some chickpeas or air fried them.
01:14 And then I have some arugula
01:16 and like this cucumber tomato salad.
01:18 I also have grapes and then I have my go-to breakfast,
01:22 my overnight oats.
01:23 If you like to maximize your time in the mornings,
01:25 I highly recommend overnight oats.
01:27 I make overnight protein oats.
01:29 They just like stick with me all morning
01:31 and it has like 24 or more grams of protein.
01:34 Today I used the Level 1 cinnamon cookie batter.
01:39 This protein is so good.
01:40 It has 24 grams of protein
01:42 and it's a sustained assimilation way.
01:44 So it lasts with you a really long time.
01:46 It's also a low temperature process.
01:47 Sometimes when things are processed at high temperatures,
01:50 the protein can like degrade and not be as effective.
01:52 So I don't know, it's my favorite protein

03:10 So we're going for a kind of blue look today.
03:12 I have to wear gray scrubs.
03:14 So that's, you know, I get to accessorize with other colors.

04:02 So I just got back from class.
04:11 And now is usually the time that I play with Peach outside.
04:16 She usually likes to be pet for a bit and then we play.
04:20 So excuse my angle because I'm on the ground petting Peach.
04:23 But we finished class a little early today.
04:26 Usually we get out like literally no later than five
04:29 on Wednesdays for a perio class, but we got out at 3.30.
04:33 He actually let us out.
04:34 'Cause usually we're done by 3.30,
04:35 but he makes us like stay and wait.
04:37 And like when there's literally nothing to do,
04:39 like we couldn't even practice if we wanted to.
04:41 So today we did subgingival scaling
04:47 on the mandibular right quadrant.
04:50 So we practiced that and then we prepped
04:52 some more fake calculus stuff
04:54 that you just paint on the teeth for next week.
04:57 Usually Wednesdays are like my workout days.
05:00 Like I usually go to the gym on Wednesdays,
05:02 but my back has kind of been hurting me.
05:03 And I just kind of want to give myself a break.
05:06 So I might just do a little like treadmill walk
05:10 at my apartment gym, which I, you know, if you know me,
05:14 you know, I don't usually do cardio,
05:16 but I sit for so much of the day
05:17 that I really just want to like, I don't know,
05:20 move a little bit before I sit and study for longer.
05:24 But now I have to play with Peach
05:26 because she is getting a little, a little excited.
05:29 As you can tell.

05:54 Just going to have a little snack before my workout.
05:57 I'm going to have some pretzels with chocolate hummus.
06:00 This stuff is so good.
06:01 It's from Trader Joe's.
06:02 It literally tastes like brownie batter.
06:04 It doesn't taste like hummus at all.
06:06 It's so good.
06:06 So I'm just going to have a few of these
06:07 and then go walk a little bit.
06:09 All right, just threw on quick little gym outfit.

06:14 It's just like I tied it in the back myself.
06:17 And these leggings are my favorite

07:03 where I make one of my overnight oats
07:05 with my level one protein.
07:07 But I think tomorrow,
07:09 I think tomorrow I'm going to make myself
07:11 some Kodiak Power Waffles
07:13 and just pop them in the toaster for breakfast.
07:16 So, and then I always like to pack my snacks in advance.
07:19 These are the little pink and white cookies
07:21 from Trader Joe's.
07:22 So good.
07:23 They're like shortbread cookies
07:24 covered in like yogurt kind of thing.
07:27 Got some pretzels and I have one of my built bars.
07:30 These are just my favorite little afternoon snack.
07:32 They literally taste like a candy bar
07:34 and they are just so fricking good.
07:36 So, packing that.
07:37 So I just took a shower.
07:40 Now I'm in my comfy study clothes.
07:42 Okay, so I'm making my greens and reds.
07:45 And these things are honestly like
07:48 something I cannot go without.
07:50 Like even a day without these.
07:52 Like I literally can't because they keep me so healthy.
07:55 These literally prevent me from getting sick.
07:57 The only time I've been sick this entire year
08:00 is the one week that I ordered them late
08:02 and wasn't able to have them.
08:04 There's definitely been a couple sicknesses
08:06 going around my school and I have not gotten them yet.
08:09 And I am usually the first person to get sick.
08:13 So, I do have these links down below.
08:15 The greens help a lot with bloating
08:16 and have a lot of pre and probiotics in them.
08:19 And the reds have a ton of antioxidants.
08:22 And together, they just help me a lot.

08:46 This is some like garlic something, mahi-mahi from Costco.
08:51 Haven't tried it yet, so we'll see how it is.

08:55 Then I have some full mega fish oil pills and my probiotic.
09:00 I mainly take my fish oils for dry eye,
09:02 but they have a ton of benefits.
09:04 So, now I'm gonna watch a little YouTube video while I eat
09:07 and then get back to studying.
09:08 Also, if you don't let your cat up on the counter,
09:10 then you're doing it wrong.

09:13 Okay, I just wanted to do a quick little study chat.
09:16 I'm studying for my human structure and function exam.
09:20 It's on Friday.
09:21 And this is like basically like a physiology class.
09:23 And this unit is all about like the cardiac system
09:27 and the respiratory system.
09:28 Some exams I'll make like a full on study guide.
09:31 Some exams I'll try to write out
09:33 like all my notes and everything.
09:35 But lately, I just haven't been having the time for that.
09:37 And what I find most effective
09:39 is to like logically think about everything.
09:42 So, I go through all of the slides.
09:44 Each PowerPoint probably takes me two hours-ish.
09:48 If I'm really spending time on it,
09:50 I take little notes on the side, I break things down,
09:53 and I make sure I have a good understanding
09:55 of everything that's going on.
09:57 I don't just scroll through the slides
09:58 and just like skim them or even just read them.
10:01 Like I really actually have to think about everything
10:04 because memorizing is a lot easier
10:05 if you can actually like understand what's going on
10:08 so that you actually don't have to memorize as much
10:11 and you just understand how it works.
10:13 So, if you can think logically through something
10:15 instead of having to memorize it,
10:17 makes your life a lot easier.
10:18 And then for things I do have to memorize,
10:20 I try to come up with little silly mnemonics
10:23 whenever I can.
10:24 Usually I do that kind of last minute
10:26 so I haven't really come up with
10:27 a whole lot of mnemonics yet.
10:28 But yeah, or I just like kind of relate the words together.
10:31 Like for example, we have angiotensin here.
10:34 Angiotensin, think really tense, vasoconstricts.
10:39 So I just try to like, you know,
10:40 figure out my way through those
10:42 because I can't memorize everything.
10:43 So coming up with little associations
10:45 makes life a lot easier.

11:03 Like I find tables super helpful.
11:05 I love looking at tables
11:06 because it just breaks things down so easily.
11:08 So a lot of those, just like a lot of processes and things.
11:12 So I did that for each of the PowerPoints.
11:15 So this is like not even a quarter of the information
11:19 that I have to know, but that's okay.
11:21 You know, we got a lot to do.
11:23 For those who always ask, I have the iPad Pro
11:25 and I use the Apple Pencil
11:27 and I just take my notes on OneNote.
11:29 It's completely free.

11:41 It's about 7.50 and I'm about to head
11:45 to our outreach rotations.
11:46 On Thursday mornings, this semester,
11:48 we go to elementary schools and teach them
11:50 about oral health, oral hygiene, whatnot.
11:53 Today we have kindergarten and first graders.
11:55 Hi.
11:56 Yeah.
11:57 Today we have kindergarten and first graders.
12:00 So we tend to prefer the younger kids
12:02 'cause they don't ask too many complicated questions.
12:05 So yeah, I have that.
12:06 And then I go back to campus
12:08 and we're going to learn how to do the Cavitron today,
12:11 which is an ultrasonic scaler.
12:12 And also Profis, which is when they clean your teeth
12:15 with that little like little circley thing
12:16 that kind of goes around.
12:18 So we're gonna learn that today.

13:04 I'm pretty tired, not gonna lie.
13:06 The rotations were fun this morning
13:08 and then we went to Krispy Kreme
13:09 because we had a little extra time.
13:11 So we got some donuts and some study fuel.
13:14 Studied a little bit and then we learned
13:16 how to use the Cavitron and Profi.
13:18 It was pretty simple.
13:19 The Cavitron literally like blasts off
13:21 like anything that's on the teeth, which is super nice.
13:24 We didn't use it in a mouth.
13:26 So not exactly like obviously how we would be doing it.
13:29 We just use it on our like typed on teeth over the sink.
13:32 But yeah, now I know how to do it at least kind of.
13:34 So we're gonna practice on each other next week,
13:36 at least with the Profis.
13:38 So yeah, that'll be good.
13:39 That'll be actual practice on a person.
13:40 And it's basically, I don't know if I've explained yet,
13:42 but Profis are just kind of like polishing
13:45 like the crown of your tooth.
13:46 We probably won't use the Cavitron on each other
13:49 because usually like you need like a lot more calculus
13:52 on your teeth to use it.
13:53 And like as dental students,
13:55 we kind of take care of our teeth pretty well.
13:57 So yeah, I still have a lot to go over for my test.
13:59 So I'm gonna have a little bit to eat right now,
14:02 relax for just a little bit
14:04 'cause I'm just a little bit tired
14:06 and then I'm gonna get to studying.

14:28 I just, I'm really tired and feeling unmotivated.

14:38 but my friends and I were texting
14:41 and literally none of us were motivated to study for this.
14:43 And we're all like A students.
