Trey Galloway, Kel'el Ware Press Conference After Indiana Basketball's 85-71 Loss To Penn State
Transcript
00:00 Kahlil, maybe for you, but both of you, if you'd like.
00:03 You guys got off to a good start,
00:04 had an 11-point lead 15 minutes in the game,
00:06 and obviously it went from there.
00:10 We asked Coach Woodson about just the energy and effort
00:13 that went into that.
00:13 Did you guys see some sort of lack of energy and effort
00:16 among yourselves, though, too, out there when
00:18 they were making that run?
00:20 For sure.
00:21 I mean, we didn't really--
00:25 I mean, we came out in the second half.
00:28 I mean, we had a four-point lead going into the half,
00:30 and we weren't playing well at all.
00:32 I mean, and then we come on the second half,
00:35 and it's the same thing.
00:36 We're just not playing hard enough and smart enough
00:40 on the defensive end.
00:41 We had a lot of unnecessary fouling,
00:43 and then just a bunch of miscues that--
00:46 it's really just on us that we can't have this late
00:48 in the season.
00:51 Jeff and Zach.
00:53 Yeah, Trey, I just want to get your thoughts.
00:55 They hit 12 threes, shot better than 50% from the arc.
00:58 What do you see as the issue there?
01:00 I mean, I think they're shooting around 29%, 30% from the year.
01:08 And to shoot that well, obviously, we're not
01:12 making an impact on them enough.
01:15 They got a lot of open shots.
01:16 And like I said, that just goes back to our miscues
01:19 and the things we weren't doing, talking enough,
01:22 and all those little things that went into the preparation
01:25 that we didn't do.
01:25 So we have to be better.
01:29 I guess for either of you guys, particularly
01:31 there in the second half, I think
01:31 Coach Woodson said that Penn State was just
01:33 kind of dictating a lot.
01:34 Just what couldn't you guys kind of pull together
01:37 to sort of push back against them once?
01:39 Maybe I think they started on like a 22 to 7
01:41 run there after halftime.
01:43 Yeah, they were just playing harder than us.
01:45 And I mean, it's hard to really get a flow on offense
01:48 when you can't get stops.
01:50 And I think our offense comes from being
01:52 able to get stops and run and doing certain things.
01:55 So if we don't get stops, we're not
01:56 going to be able to flow on offense.
01:58 And that's just going to--
01:59 it's going to be a spiral and an impact on our offense
02:01 when we're bad on defense.
02:05 Trey, you mentioned the miscues on defense
02:07 kind of with switching.
02:08 So I guess with that miscommunication aspect,
02:10 is that stemming mostly from preparation?
02:12 And I guess how can you go about changing that moving forward?
02:15 I think just being in the moment and being
02:18 confident in what we're doing.
02:19 Coach gives us a game plan.
02:21 We've got to follow it and do it.
02:23 I think there's miscommunications
02:26 kind of just being hesitant.
02:27 But we've got to kind of break out of that shell
02:29 and talk to each other and find ways to get stops.
02:31 And it's all of us.
02:33 It's not just one guy.
02:34 It was all five guys on the court tonight.
02:35 And it showed.
02:38 Mike, then we'll wrap it.
02:39 Daniel?
02:40 Being flat in the second half, do you
02:42 feel like you're a little worn down at this point
02:44 with the injuries and kind of the up and down nature
02:46 of the season?
02:46 Does that contribute to that?
02:47 Or is that just something unique to this game
02:50 where you just didn't have it in the second half maybe?
02:53 I mean, I don't think so.
02:54 I mean, we prepared the right way.
02:58 And we knew that they're going to come in here
03:00 and try to play physical and do all the little things
03:03 to try to kind of throw off a game and kind of mix it up.
03:06 But like I said, at the end of the day,
03:08 it's just us playing harder and smarter.
03:11 Last question, Dan.
03:12 Yeah, Trey.
03:14 Woodson mentioned a lack of fire.
03:16 How do you go about fostering more fire?
03:18 And then kind of what were the conversations you all
03:21 had in that second half run about trying
03:23 to create that more, I guess, fight at the end?
03:26 Yeah, I mean, when teams go on runs,
03:30 you've got to really find ways to come together and get stops.
03:35 And they're hitting some tough shots.
03:36 But still, if you give them confidence early,
03:39 they're going to kind of get in the flow.
03:40 And that's what they did.
03:41 So I think just us really kind of coming together
03:44 and all five guys on the court coming together as one,
03:48 that's the biggest thing we needed to do.
03:50 didn't do that tonight, I mean today.
