01:12 Now, calling no other than Joe Sevilla of Happy Life.
01:18 How are you, Joe?
01:22 Hello, hello, Sir Buts.
01:23 Thank you for having me.
01:24 And how are you?
01:25 I'm good.
01:26 Thank you.
01:26 Thank you.
01:27 How's everything, Sir Buts?
01:30 Yes, very good.
01:31 I'm sure you're very happy because everybody
01:33 is using the word "happy."
01:35 OK?
01:36 So tell me, Joe, how did you arrive at Happy Life?
01:40 Yes, tell me how did you arrive at Happy Life?
01:44 [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
01:47 In the day that we live, [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
01:49 and [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG] learnings then at the same time.
01:53 [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
01:55 [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
01:56 is a constant reminder of our goal [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
02:00 and our goal, whatever we do, is to have a happy life.
02:04 So that's why we come up with that name, Happy Life.
02:07 And how did you start?
02:10 Did you ever get to work before you start Happy Life?
02:16 What were your experiences before this?
02:20 Yeah.
02:21 Actually, Sir Buts, [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
02:23 by profession, I'm a licensed nurse.
02:26 But when I was in third-year college,
02:29 that's the time that I felt that, well, what I wanted to--
02:34 [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
02:35 entrepreneur, [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
02:36 businessman.
02:38 But at the time, third-year college, [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
02:42 is a course in nursing.
02:43 So make or break, [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
02:47 then I'll follow my dreams to be a businessman,
02:50 to be an entrepreneur.
02:51 So finally, [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
02:57 so [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
03:00 and your business [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
03:02 home massage at the time.
03:03 [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
03:06 so [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
03:07 although I feel [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
03:10 lack of capitalization, [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
03:15 so [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
03:18 so [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
03:20 [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
03:22 [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
03:24 to be a businessman.
03:26 So [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
03:31 you know how to speak.
03:33 So at the time, [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
03:38 how to speak the proper English, how to do--
03:46 how to communicate well.
03:48 So [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
03:50 call center for one year.
03:54 And then [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
03:56 [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
03:58 at the time, [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
03:59 so I went to GSK [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
04:04 for one year.
04:05 So [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
04:08 [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
04:11 so [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
04:14 so at the time, [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
04:16 [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
04:18 seven years.
04:19 [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
04:21 We learned a lot [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
04:25 and also [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
04:29 so we learned a lot and we enjoyed a lot as well.
04:31 So it took me nine years to learn the craft
04:35 to be a businessman.
04:36 [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
04:38 At the same time, I'm still earning as an employee.
04:42 [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
04:44 So it took me nine years [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
04:50 So basically, when you were a student,
04:55 you have this nature of questioning where will I go,
05:00 what will I do, and knowing your--
05:04 [SPEAKING IN TAGALOG]
05:06 for example, learning how to speak,
05:08 learning how to be on sales.
05:11 So you were really laying out the groundstone,
05:14 the foundation for your business eventually, correct?
05:19 Right.
05:21 But did you have already in mind what business you were
05:23 when you were with Nestle on the seven years that you spent?
05:29 Yeah.
05:30 Did you have anything in mind already?
05:32 Yeah.
05:33 Actually, back then, when I was in my fifth year in Nestle,
05:38 so I was trying to build a happy life at that time.
05:42 Because it actually goes way, way back.
05:47 So that was since I was very small.
05:49 There were a lot of fumes in the house.
05:51 And we used heavy disinfectant, cleaner, insecticide.
05:57 So I was the last to go inside the house because of the fumes
06:01 inside, and it would trigger my asthma attacks.
06:04 So that's the time now when my father discovered
06:07 that the plant extracts can do as such,
06:12 can do like disinfectant, insect repellent, insecticide,
06:15 deodorizer, and cleaner.
06:18 That you can use it while the baby is still at home,
06:23 the pets are at home.
06:24 So you could use it alongside the [INAUDIBLE]
06:28 and marginalized, for example.
06:31 So in 2017, since I was deeply rooted there,
06:35 I was the first customer there.
06:38 I thought, hey, there are pain points here.
06:41 So maybe there are a lot of fathers or families
06:45 that are feeling the same.
06:47 So why don't we share it through the business?
06:49 So that's why we started in 2017, the Say Happy Life.
06:54 Oh, so that was--
06:55 actually, the trigger point is because of your health
06:58 and the concern of your dad, being [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
07:09 But again, it's really part of a business exploration.
07:14 Everybody discovers it in one way or another.
07:17 In your case, you're able to discover your dad
07:20 because of the pain point to come up with the solution.
07:24 So this is where you focus your Happy Life product.
07:28 So what was the first product that your dad
07:32 created at that time?
07:35 The first product, Sir Buz, is called Begon LC.
07:39 Begon, as in begon, bacteria, viruses, and insects.
07:43 LC is liquid concentrate.
07:46 So because it's a liquid concentrate,
07:48 so one is the 10.
07:50 So your one liter, the usage is 10 liters.
07:53 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
07:56 So very eco-friendly.
07:59 Of course, plant-based.
08:00 And value for money, too.
08:02 Wow.
08:05 What year was this when your dad created the product Begon?
08:11 Begon, it was 2007.
08:14 And then finally, 2017, we really marketed it
08:19 and commercialized it to share it in the Philippines
08:23 so that we can have more help and more people
08:26 can help through that business.
08:29 OK.
08:31 One thing that enters in every entrepreneur
08:35 is the ability, if they can still pursue, succeed,
08:40 or probably just start to--
08:44 did it happen to you and say, OK, I
08:47 guess this product is not worth it.
08:49 Let's just shelve it and go into another business.
08:55 Did that ever happen to you?
08:57 Yeah, definitely, Sir Buz.
08:58 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
09:15 Especially when you're doing startup.
09:18 And if you're doing everything, as in everything,
09:22 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
09:24 along the way.
09:25 And sometimes, you will have self-doubt.
09:29 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
09:31 Just take the first step.
09:36 Just do it.
09:38 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
09:40 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
09:42 And you're there for them.
09:57 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
10:00 And then you will come to a point
10:02 that [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
10:06 because your clients are there.
10:08 And you're now thinking not of yourself,
10:11 but for the client as well, right?
10:13 Yes.
10:14 Yes, that's true, Sir Buz.
10:17 But tell me, being Happy Life, being an entrepreneur now,
10:25 did your business ever generate employment?
10:29 Did it ever help create more jobs in your community?
10:35 Yeah.
10:35 Actually, that's one thing, Sir Buz,
10:37 that I like about being a businessman.
10:40 It's really helping also the community.
10:43 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
10:44 Sir Buz is [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] bees.
10:49 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] is to get honey.
10:52 Just like us, entrepreneur, our end goal, of course,
10:55 is profit.
10:57 But along the way, just like bees,
10:59 by getting honey, [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
11:01 same goes to [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
11:11 by hitting [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
11:15 community by generating jobs and helping the community,
11:19 helping our clients, helping our partners as well.
11:22 So given that, [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
11:28 And then [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
11:31 if a fast truck [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
11:33 in the manufacturing plant [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
11:37 so [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] another 20, another 30.
11:40 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
11:41 So the [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] community
11:44 while we are doing business.
11:46 So you know, [INAUDIBLE]
11:49 I learned that you also ventured into pets.
11:53 What made you decide to go into pets, Joe?
11:57 Yeah.
11:58 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
12:01 And if you would check, [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
12:05 versus a pet.
12:06 So [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] allergy because of these antigens,
12:10 for example, or bacteria or viruses or allergens,
12:14 what were your pets?
12:16 So [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
12:25 So [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] are really plant-based and really
12:30 pet-safe.
12:31 So [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
12:33 So [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] veterinary hospitals,
12:39 veterinary clinics.
12:41 Then we also strengthen [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
12:46 industry.
12:47 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
12:49 as a happy life, [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
12:51 We have three categories.
12:53 We have pet care, we have home care, and personal care.
12:58 So but knowing the fact that the pet industry has really
13:04 gone huge earnings for the country,
13:08 how competitive is now Happy Life
13:11 in terms of the pet industry?
13:14 Yeah.
13:15 Actually, Sir, our core, [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
13:17 as a company is innovation.
13:20 So we keep on innovating things.
13:22 And we don't want to bring a product to market.
13:26 Just to bring a product, we wanted
13:28 to really add value to clients and to our pets.
13:33 One example is your waterless shampoo.
13:36 It's first in the Philippines, the waterless shampoo.
13:38 So you just have to spray, then lather, then wipe.
13:42 So [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
13:44 It's just five minutes.
13:46 No need to rinse.
13:48 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
13:52 So what's your estimate of the pet industry
13:56 now in the Philippines, Joe?
13:59 How would you estimate it right now?
14:00 Actually, [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
14:03 It can go to hundreds of millions to billions
14:07 of peso, see, the pet industry.
14:09 Actually, globally, like the $30 billion in the US.
14:16 $30 billion industry in the US.
14:18 And globally, about $90 billion, globally, the pet industry.
14:24 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
14:27 So that's a trend right now.
14:43 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
14:47 So [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] for baby parent or for parents.
14:52 So it has become a sort of like--
14:55 it became very relevant, especially during the pandemic,
14:59 when a lot of people resorted to pets
15:03 rather than being isolated.
15:07 So what's the future of happy life now?
15:10 Where do you want to take happy life for 2024, Joe?
15:15 It's really our vision to be a global company, see,
15:19 happy life.
15:19 So we started in the US.
15:21 We have a branch in the US and Canada.
15:24 And we wanted to stretch to ASEAN market.
15:28 And we wanted to really help a lot of people
15:31 and like [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] happy life,
15:34 not really helping not just the clients, not just the dogs
15:39 and the cats, but also the environment.
15:42 So to have an eco shift.
15:45 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
15:48 It just reminded me that one of the people that I interviewed
15:53 also mentioned about the trademark.
15:57 Is happy life well registered in the trademark?
16:02 Yes.
16:02 Not only the Philippines, but the US?
16:05 Yes, both ways, sir.
16:07 Both, not just registered in the IPO, also in the US.
16:13 OK.
16:14 Because happy life is very generic,
16:17 and it can be claimed by so many people.
16:20 But again, that's one of the things
16:23 that entrepreneurs must really remember,
16:26 is to protect their trademark and also the brand equity
16:31 increases as the years go by.
16:34 So can you more or less provide us [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
16:39 tips for our viewers who are like you, young, probably
16:44 trying to earn and learn?
16:47 And also being entrepreneurs at that, trying to scale up.
16:52 What are the three main components
16:55 that you can more or less give an advice?
16:58 OK.
16:59 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
17:00 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
17:02 Yes.
17:02 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
17:03 Yes.
17:04 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
17:05 Sometimes, as business owners, [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
17:09 Yes.
17:10 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
17:10 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
17:11 [LAUGHS]
17:12 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
17:13 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
17:14 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
17:15 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
17:15 So [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
17:18 Now, we need to protect [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
17:20 that we create [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
17:22 So very important [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
17:26 So [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
17:27 So now, [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] three points of advice is--
17:31 number one is have faith.
17:34 So sometimes, [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
17:39 But it's very rewarding at the same time.
17:42 But sometimes, [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
17:44 mental health issues, sometimes, [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
17:47 self-doubt, sometimes, [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
17:50 fear.
17:51 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
17:55 is to have faith and be grateful.
17:58 So once you have faith--
18:01 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
18:02 Just take the first step.
18:04 And you know, [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
18:08 But there comes faith.
18:10 Sometimes, [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
18:13 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
18:15 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
18:17 in doing a business.
18:19 But if you have faith, [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
18:22 So it will boost you, and it will help you.
18:26 So number one is to have faith.
18:27 Have faith that you can do it.
18:30 Have faith that you're not doing it alone.
18:32 Have faith that there's someone bigger than you
18:35 that he can push you to soar high.
18:39 That's number one in faith.
18:41 Number two is persistence.
18:44 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
18:45 In all the business books that I've read,
18:47 in all the business movies that I've watched,
18:52 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
18:53 in one word, it's persistence.
18:56 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
19:00 So in business, it's not a matter of yes or no.
19:05 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
19:06 It's already yes, but it's just a matter of time.
19:10 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
19:13 But it's very certain that you will succeed
19:16 as in your persistence.
19:18 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
19:20 It's just persistence.
19:22 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
19:25 We have faith.
19:25 We have persistence.
19:26 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
19:30 But you just keep on going.
19:32 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
19:34 It's not a matter of yes or no.
19:36 It's a matter of yes, but it's just a matter of time
19:39 when [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
19:40 So just have faith and persistence.
19:43 And the third one, of course, is why.
19:48 Now, you have to know deep inside you,
19:52 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
19:55 Is it for your family?
19:57 Is it for yourself?
19:59 Is it for the community, for the environment?
20:03 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
20:05 That was compelling and strong why.
20:09 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
20:12 And it will be your mission to do something.
20:15 When you wake up in the morning, [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
20:20 So it all boils down to why.
20:22 Why do you do it?
20:24 And is it for your family?
20:26 Is it for yourself?
20:27 Is it for God?
20:28 Is it for anything else?
20:30 I don't know why.
20:31 You have to discover your why.
20:33 And then you will have faith, and then you will be persistent,
20:36 and then you will be successful.
20:38 So you just have to do this.
20:39 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
20:42 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
20:45 This is actually the life of entrepreneurs.
20:47 The life of entrepreneurs.
20:48 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
20:50 We're not Superman.
20:53 We don't own everything.
20:55 The destiny is actually how we want to create it,
20:58 but the rest is actually how the guy upstairs
21:01 is really going to plot it.
21:03 And finding your happiness, imagine
21:08 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
21:11 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
21:14 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
21:18 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
21:20 And the milestone that you have,
21:25 your product did not only reach the shores of the Philippines,
21:30 but this has gone to the US as well as Canada.
21:33 In other words, a global brand.
21:35 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
21:40 But I guess, [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
21:42 is how you really plot and how you focus.
21:46 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
21:47 Like, for example, [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
21:50 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
21:52 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
21:54 Left and right, left and right.
21:55 But again, at the end, you don't accomplish everything.
21:58 But one of the things that I like what you said
22:00 is like the bee.
22:03 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
22:04 Keeps on moving and moving and moving and generating,
22:08 pollinating, and really creating more.
22:13 And in your case, you're spreading happiness in life.
22:17 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
22:19 So yeah, Joe, thank you very much for this time.
22:23 And really, I'm sure our viewers really love to see
22:29 and probably connect with your Happy Life products
22:33 in all the social platforms.
22:35 And again, good luck to Happy Life.
22:40 And really, keep on generating and generating happiness.
22:44 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
22:46 So yeah, [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
22:48 Thank you.
22:49 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
22:50 Right?
22:51 So again, Joe, thank you very much for this opportunity.
22:54 And I'll be letting you know when our blog will be shown
23:02 and share it with a lot of people
23:05 so that you can spread happiness.
23:07 Right?
23:10 OK, Joe.
23:11 That's very nice, Sir Butz.
23:13 So yeah, so thank you very much for this opportunity.
23:16 And really, happy holidays to you and the family
23:19 and to the network of Happy Life.
23:21 OK?
23:22 Thank you.
23:23 Yes, Sir Butz.
23:24 Thank you.
23:25 Bye-bye.
23:25 Take care, Sir Butz.
23:26 Thank you.
23:27 Bye-bye.
