The title of the series is based on a Korean children's game of the same name. Hwang was inspired by his own financial struggles for the series. The writer wrote the story in 2009 but couldn't find anyone to fund the project until Netflix joined the project in 2019. A slew of new cast members for the second season include Park Gyu-Young, Jo Yu-Ri, Kang Ae-Sim, Lee David, Lee Jin-Uk, Choi Seung-Hyun, Roh Jae-Won, and Won Ji-An.
