00:00 - So, Josh, continue about the banked in three
00:03 that they had right at the,
00:04 as the shot clock is going down.
00:07 Key point, I mean, do players sort of hang their head
00:09 when a moment like that happens?
00:12 - I mean, it's human nature, too.
00:14 Whether you can recover from it is, you know, the key.
00:18 So, adversity hits, I mean, you're in a groove,
00:21 you're on a roll, things are going your way,
00:23 and then, you know, a shot like that goes in,
00:26 sure, it's gonna hit your confidence.
00:29 So, there's a couple of those down the stretch
00:31 that just were kind of demoralizing,
00:32 and it's hard to recover from 'em, you know,
00:36 with that late, I don't know when that happened,
00:40 to be honest with you, but it was late in the game.
00:43 - Coach, I know Jesse just kind of took
00:45 some of the blame on himself with the defense,
00:47 but in all seriousness here, we're talking about Traore,
00:50 he's six foot six, and so, just what was he able
00:55 to accomplish, I mean, how much fits to him?
00:58 - Jesse's not 100%, and when you're trying to,
01:01 when trying to stop a guy of that size,
01:06 and you're allowed an arm bar,
01:08 but your wrist is right there, right?
01:10 And sure, he's still trying to protect that wrist,
01:13 and there's still some pain there,
01:14 and it's not uncommon, but it's still
01:17 where we're at with it, and the whole question
01:21 is whether you send a double or not,
01:23 more than anything, you try to get him
01:25 to catch off the block, and do your work early.
01:28 He was getting really deep position,
01:30 and Jesse was behind, and if he gets a couple
01:33 bounces with his size and strength,
01:34 he's gonna get right underneath the rim.
01:36 And so consequently, he did.
01:39 Now the question is, do we double or not?
01:41 And it's hard to double a team like that.
01:44 As well as they pass, they pass that thing
01:49 right out there, and one more, one more,
01:51 and it's another three point shot.
01:54 So it's an adjustment we probably need
01:57 to take a look at as a coaching staff,
01:59 whether we should have done it or not.
02:00 In this position, you second guess everything,
02:03 and you question it, and you overanalyze it
02:05 after the fact, figure out what you can do differently
02:08 in terms of learning for the next game.
02:12 - So if you have to double on him,
02:14 then that really kind of--
02:15 - That opens up the floor, I mean,
02:16 then you're four on three elsewhere,
02:19 and credit to BYU, they're excellent
02:22 at reading the defense, they're excellent
02:24 at making extra pass.
02:26 They had 19 assists, eight turnovers.
02:28 I mean, Hall was 12 assists by himself.
02:33 So, yeah, I mean, they play really good team basketball,
02:37 and when they're clicking, they're clicking.
02:41 And you look at the Big 12 standings,
02:44 and they're making right at their average tonight
02:46 in terms of threes per game.
02:48 They're right at their average
02:50 in the way they score the ball.
02:52 But to me, it's the 27 easy buckets
02:57 they got that we can really control.
02:59 They're gonna make shots, they're gonna make open shots,
03:02 that's what they do.
03:04 - Josh, you guys have kind of like sagged
03:06 and impacted in lately on defense,
03:08 but that's not the team to do that against,
03:10 I'm guessing.
03:11 How did you guys do things today,
03:13 and what did you see as far as response?
03:15 - I think sometimes we were dropping
03:18 when we should have been dropping,
03:20 and it created a lot of opportunities
03:21 where there's too much help.
03:24 And the ball movement was as good as I've seen all year.
03:28 So they took advantage,
03:30 and they read the defense, like I said.
03:32 So if you make a mistake,
03:33 any ball screen coverage, or don't catch a curl,
03:36 I mean, there's so many things you can look at
03:38 and analyze defensively where we made mistakes.
03:42 And credit to them, like I said,
03:44 they see a defensive miscue, they take advantage of it.
03:48 And a lot of teams that you can recover,
03:51 and BYU consequently,
03:53 they made us pay for all of our defensive mistakes.
03:56 I don't think it's a game plan thing
03:58 that where our game plan,
04:01 we were in the wrong.
04:02 I mean, certainly we can probably go back and look
04:04 and say we could have done this or that,
04:06 but it was more the miscues of the game plan
04:09 we were trying to execute.
04:11 - So it was something a little bit different
04:12 that you guys were trying to do today?
04:13 - Yeah.
04:15 - Do you like having a week off right now,
04:16 or would you rather go out there and play some more
04:17 and keep things, you know, going?
04:20 - Well, it's time for a week off.
04:23 I mean, we need to get our legs under us
04:26 and work on what we can work on,
04:29 and especially going into a two-game road trip,
04:32 it'd be nice to be very fresh
04:34 going into a two-game road trip.
04:35 You know, that's two very challenging games,
04:37 Texas and TCU, so to have your legs under you.
04:42 If you look back, I mean, BYU,
04:44 you know, they had their week off.
04:46 So I thought they played pretty fresh
04:49 and pretty rejuvenated,
04:52 and they looked it out there,
04:53 regardless of having to fly across the country
04:55 and probably a four-hour flight.
04:57 But so they, you know, look good,
05:00 they look fresh, and that's part of battling
05:03 in the hardest conference in the country
05:05 is trying to, you know, get your legs under you
05:08 and fight for your recovery.
05:10 - Coach, was Cook, was he sick or hurt?
05:15 - That was a medical issue,
05:18 they were uncomfortable with him going at this time,
05:21 and so I can't get into the specifics,
05:25 but it had nothing to do with him personally
05:28 or my decision whatsoever.
05:30 It was something that we just had to just move on.
05:35 - Looking forward, you don't--
05:37 - I don't anticipate him, you know,
05:40 missing another game at this point, but so.
05:43 - Was it related to the previous thing?
05:46 - I don't want to get into it, it's not my place.
05:51 - Anything else?
05:52 - Yeah, second half, watching minutes with Jesse,
05:57 or just, I mean--
05:59 - Yeah, I mean--
06:01 - 'Cause I know you say, I mean, obviously,
06:02 he's, you know, he's not 100%, I think.
06:04 - Yeah.
06:06 No, I mean, you could probably analyze it
06:08 and say we probably could have got him in quicker at times,
06:10 sure, but, yeah, we'll take a look at that,
06:15 but he only got 23 minutes, so.
06:20 Right there, I think we got a lot more out of him,
06:22 honestly, than I thought we'd get out of him
06:23 when we played Cincinnati, so we're at a point
06:27 where we're still trying to manage that situation.
06:30 - Josh, last two games, you just kind of seem
06:32 good and bad versions of yourself,
06:34 maybe more good and bad in some spots, too.
06:36 What have you learned that you can bottle up
06:38 and emphasize in this couple of days
06:40 and for the remainder of the season?
06:43 - You know, biggest thing for me,
06:45 I guess as long as you're asking from a program standpoint
06:47 or from me personally, from a program standpoint,
06:52 I mean, I preach it all the time,
06:53 we can't get too high, can't get too low,
06:55 we gotta find that baseline consistency
06:58 and fight each and every day for that growth,
07:01 you know, as a team, so that's the name of the game
07:04 at this point, like every day, find a way to get better.
07:07 And probably took a step back tonight
07:09 in terms of, you know, executing our game plan
07:13 to a T and certainly, like I tell these guys
07:15 all the time, a game of basketball is full of mistakes,
07:19 there's mistakes everywhere and the team
07:21 that does the best job of minimizing
07:23 those mistakes usually wins.
07:25 And we didn't do a great job of minimizing
07:28 our mistakes and they took advantage of them.
07:30 And when a team hits 13 threes and 39 points
07:34 from the three point line, it's hard to overcome.
07:37 Thank you.
