LAXART presents the first solo exhibition of New York based artist Kalup Linzy, curated by Laxart Adjunct Curator, Malik Gaines. “The conventions of television soap operas become a hilarious and insightful psycho-sexual playground for New York-based artist Kalup Linzy, as he turns this most mundane form inside out with his series of clever videos, ‘Conversations Wit De Churen’.” (PR LAXART). Linzy’s film approach recalls the early styles of John Waters, Andy Warhol, and George C. Wolfe. This episode shows a snippet of Linzy’s video and a short interview with Kalup Linzy. LAXART, July, 2006. By VTV correspondents Parichard Holm Steakley, Slim K and Gerold Wunstel.

00:15 What was your motivation behind your work?
00:20 The particular piece that I have on view in LAX is a piece called All My Children. It was done in 2003 and it was inspired by me growing up watching soap operas with my grandmother.
00:37 So in graduate school, doing my research for family history, art history, cultural history, I came up with the idea to do a soap opera because I also had a background in theater and writing, screenwriting, prior to going into grad school.
00:59 So it's primarily, you know, in general.
01:05 You're out of New York right now?
01:08 Yeah, right now I'm based in New York. I moved in New York in 2003 and so I guess I've been up there going on three years.
01:17 It's your first exhibition in Los Angeles?
01:21 I was in a group show at Champion Fine Arts a couple of years back, but this is like my first time being in LA physically.
01:35 And you grew up in Florida?
01:37 I grew up in Florida. I've been in Florida all of my life until I went to New York. I got my undergraduate and graduate degree from USF, the University of South Florida, which took eight years.
01:52 Eight years?
01:54 So...
01:55 Is it Miami or Florida?
01:56 It's Tampa, Florida.
