Let me introduce you to my first female guest, @Xairpang , for In The Spotlight by Ray Mak. I've known Xair since she was 14 as she was one of my students in my YouTube, Online Music, and SEO class back in 2015. With her amazing talents and the power of the Internet and social media, I witness her landing on opportunities after opportunities, and performing in different countries in all those very tough talent competitions which involve singing, dancing, playing musical instruments, dressing up, all at the same time and so much more.
Her journey is certainly not an easy one, especially as a very young girl pursuing her dreams, but each and every experience has shaped her into the kind, amazing, talented, and still very humble woman she is today. As her Sifu, I'm extremely proud of her and certainly wish her all the best in all her future pursues.
In this Episode of In The Spotlight, you'll learn about Xair's journey as a content creator, how she tactfully turn her haters into fans, how she manage her multi faceted contents on the Internet and much more.
Be sure to like, comment, and most importantly share if you find this podcast useful. Thank you very much and advance and Enjoy the Show! Feel free to make use of these timestamps to go to the topics that you're most interested in.

00:00 It was when YouTube or just social media in general was starting to get big.
00:06 So I was upset and I cared about it quite a lot.
00:10 You're very noisy and you're very annoying, that kind of thing.
00:14 No!
00:15 No, but there are genuine people who want to see you succeed.
00:26 Hey guys, welcome to another episode of In The Spotlight.
00:31 Hi!
00:32 Hi!
00:33 So basically, In The Spotlight is a platform where I invite my good friends, who are also
00:38 content creators, to share about their journey in content creation so that we, like basically
00:46 you and I, can learn about content creation, our journey, what are challenges that we face
00:54 and so on and so forth.
00:56 So today, we have Zaya Pang.
01:00 Hi everyone, I'm Zaya.
01:02 Hi!
01:21 So Zaya is actually my first lady guest.
01:24 Woo!
01:25 My pleasure.
01:26 So Zaya, do you remember when we first met and what was your first impression?
01:37 Oh, I first met you when we were in a music studio.
01:43 So basically, I signed up for the YouTube course and you were the instructor of the
01:47 YouTube course, yes?
01:48 Yeah, the sifu.
01:49 Yes.
01:50 And how long was it ago?
01:54 I think that was 2000.
01:56 When I was still in secondary school, I think.
01:58 Yeah, like 2016 I think.
02:01 Yes, and first impression, you were confident, definitely, humble and knowledgeable.
02:09 Thank you.
02:10 You have a very, you still have now, a very broad spectrum of knowledge, like from health
02:17 related, music, you're a tech guy, you just basically, you name it, he knows it.
02:24 Wow.
02:25 It's true, it's true.
02:26 That is like Google.
02:27 It's true.
02:28 Yeah, that's my first impression of you.
02:31 Yeah, I still remember you were like so young, like I think you were like 14 or something.
02:37 Yeah, I think 14-ish, yes, yes.
02:40 So wow, so many years already, that's crazy.
02:45 So can you also tell us a little bit about what you do and what is your niche?
02:53 Yes, so basically I love music and I do music.
02:57 I sing and I dance, so I do song covers and dance covers.
03:14 And my niche, I think about 80, I would say 80% of my followers knew me from some music
03:22 related contents and yeah, but I'm starting to expand.
03:28 I'm trying different topics like fashion.
03:34 And I'll be trying like vlogs as well.
03:36 And some lifestyle videos as well.
03:45 So hopefully I can attract new friends and also encourage and inspire old friends to
03:51 become who they want to become.
03:54 Yeah.
03:55 Wow, that is good.
03:56 So how do you know that?
03:58 I mean, how do you get started into this niche?
04:04 How did I get started?
04:05 I think when I first signed up the course, the YouTube course, it was when YouTube or
04:11 just social media in general was starting to get big.
04:17 And I think as a performer, I love to perform and I needed a platform.
04:22 Because last time in those years, oh my God, in those days, the only way you can showcase
04:28 your talent is through performances or competitions and you don't really get that often.
04:34 Yeah, before social media.
04:36 Yes.
04:37 So I needed a platform and I wanted to share my work with audiences.
04:43 And obviously we all love feedback, right?
04:46 So especially the good ones.
04:48 Who doesn't?
04:49 Yeah.
04:50 So it's just a platform for me to share what I love and to hear hopefully something good
04:56 from the audiences.
04:57 Yes.
04:58 You are so super talented because most people, if like, let's say for example, they know
05:03 piano, they will be like, okay, just piano.
05:06 But you are like, you know, piano, guitar, you can sing, you can dance.
05:11 You know, how do you actually balance between like so many of these things?
05:16 How do I balance?
05:18 To be honest, piano was forced.
05:21 My mom forced me into piano.
05:24 Yes.
05:25 I didn't really like classical piano to be honest.
05:27 So, but for vocal and dance, it came pretty naturally.
05:33 I started with dance when I was about four.
05:35 Yeah.
05:36 So I really liked dancing.
05:38 Yeah.
05:39 And then slowly I got myself into singing and up till now I still am very passionate
05:46 for these things.
05:48 And for guitar, I think it was after Taylor Swift's, one of her concerts, I watched her
05:54 live and I was like so amazed and I started picking up guitar.
05:58 Oh, wow.
06:00 Yeah, she's like the main inspiration for guitar.
06:03 So that is like the inspiration that get you kind of started in the whole thing.
06:10 Yeah.
06:11 So since you are in this niche already, how have you been persisting for so long?
06:19 I think it's just because I just love what I do.
06:24 So it doesn't really...
06:26 Okay, I won't say there weren't challenges because sometimes different people have different
06:32 preferences like I may like this song but the market may not like that song.
06:38 They may prefer another song.
06:40 So I've been working to balance this out as well to do both what the market wants and
06:46 what I personally like too.
06:49 I think this is the balance that it's kind of hard to find because last time I just did
06:54 what I liked but I didn't really see the results.
07:00 So I think it's the balance.
07:02 You gotta find the balance to keep juggling between what they like and what you like.
07:09 It's very similar to what I'm doing.
07:13 So since you started exploring into all this social media thing, what kind of opportunities
07:21 have you landed on because of social media?
07:25 Because of social media.
07:26 I think the power of social media is...
07:30 Oh my god.
07:31 It's huge today and I have gotten...
07:36 How would I say this?
07:37 Like I've joined a few competitions and social media is one of the things they must have.
07:44 Okay.
07:45 They must look at.
07:47 They will ask for your social media and be reading through basically.
07:51 So I think a few competitions and also some collaborations with some friends and hopefully
07:59 I will be working with a lot more friends.
08:04 And I saw on Instagram you get to travel to quite a few places.
08:08 Yes, mostly for competitions.
08:13 So nice.
08:14 Such a good experience.
08:17 I mean imagine if you didn't get into social media and you just continue to do your music
08:23 thing.
08:24 Yes.
08:25 Where do you think?
08:26 I would have lost a lot of opportunities.
08:29 So that is really the power of social media.
08:33 It really changes life and it creates a lot of opportunity.
08:37 And of course we have to grab those opportunities because they come and go.
08:42 So along your way, what are some of the challenges that you have faced?
08:50 Challenges.
08:54 I mean not only for social media, everyone faces challenges in their life.
09:00 So what are some of the challenges?
09:07 Like the one I mentioned just now, juggling between, like you are not sure of what the
09:13 market wants and you have to test the water basically.
09:17 And a lot of things like getting hate comments.
09:23 So I have been through that.
09:27 But I am not afraid of challenges.
09:28 I think challenges are the things that force you and push you forward.
09:36 And I believe this.
09:37 I believe that you are capable of overcoming the challenge if the universe intended you
09:46 to meet the challenge.
09:48 So you must be able to.
09:50 To overcome it.
09:51 Yes.
09:52 To solve the problem.
09:53 Yes.
09:54 Tell us, because I know in the beginning when you started social media, you had quite a
10:01 lot of pretty brutal comments.
10:03 Oh yes.
10:05 Yes, that happened in your class.
10:09 I still remember and you were pretty frustrated about them.
10:13 Then I went to read, wow, I am like, how can people be so brutal?
10:18 Maybe you can tell us about some of those comments and some of the comments that actually
10:23 stayed in your mind.
10:26 I prefer not to say the comments.
10:28 But I would say that I was upset because I just started creating content.
10:35 So I was upset and I cared about it quite a lot.
10:40 But over time, I think I grew from it.
10:44 I don't, there are too many voices.
10:46 Yes, too many voices.
10:47 Yes, you can't, and it's not wrong that they have different preferences.
10:51 Like you may like this song, but I may not.
10:53 So it's fair that different people have different comments.
10:58 But I think we still have to read the comments because there are genuine people who want
11:05 to see you succeed.
11:07 So you just got to be smart and filter the comments.
11:12 And you got to be very honest to yourself.
11:14 This is the thing I think is the most important thing.
11:17 You got to be honest to yourself and read through the comments and see which will help
11:21 you improve and which is just, let's just leave it there.
11:26 Also from reading all these comments and stuff, do you think you have any haters?
11:31 Haters!
11:32 Like who passionately hate you and stuff.
11:35 Passionately hate me?
11:38 Honestly, I'm not really.
11:43 Maybe I should say I don't really focus on haters.
11:47 But there's an interesting story.
11:49 I once, there was once a hater because I was in a TV program and basically I was rock climbing
11:56 in the program.
11:57 And I kept shouting because I was scared.
12:01 And she kind of replied to my stories and she said like, "You're very noisy and you're
12:06 very annoying."
12:07 That kind of thing.
12:08 No!
12:09 No, but I replied to her.
12:11 I was like, "Oh, I'm sorry about this.
12:14 And I hope I didn't annoy you too much and I will be careful, be more careful next time."
12:20 And she actually turned into my fan.
12:22 Yeah!
12:23 So that means you responded with love and kindness instead of bashing back.
12:29 I think that is very important because I do that a lot.
12:33 Right.
12:34 I don't think it's, it's unhealthy if you keep bashing, you know, it's pointless.
12:39 True, true.
12:41 True.
12:42 So yeah, once you say that, you kill them with kindness.
12:46 Yeah, yeah, yeah.
12:47 I think my warmth, you know, they were like, "Oh, I didn't expect you to reply that way."
12:52 Yeah, I think that's very important.
12:54 Well done!
12:55 Well done!
12:56 So, along the way, do you face any like burnout because we create content, definitely it's
13:03 not that easy.
13:04 Yeah, yeah.
13:05 I mean, face to face, yes, definitely.
13:08 When you have been putting in a lot of effort and you don't see the results, that's when
13:15 you feel like, "Oh, oh my God, what should I do next?"
13:19 You know?
13:20 But for me, I think it is healthy and unhealthy.
13:26 Unhealthy because I would stop and take some time to reflect.
13:32 But unhealthy in the case for social media is because we need consistency.
13:36 Yeah.
13:37 And I'm still learning that.
13:38 But the healthy side, I think it's whenever you stop and you take time to rest and reflect,
13:46 you kind of get a clearer image of where I should go next.
13:51 Yeah.
13:52 But the next time I'll learn to keep doing while I reflect.
13:56 Yes.
13:57 Okay.
13:58 So, you are actually still very young.
14:01 You're still very young.
14:02 And what if there are other young people, especially the ladies, who also aspire to do what you
14:09 are doing?
14:10 Can you give us three advice?
14:12 Give them three advice.
14:13 Advice?
14:14 I don't think it's an advice thing.
14:17 More like three steps.
14:18 Three steps.
14:19 Oh, I like that.
14:20 You gotta start first.
14:21 Okay, you gotta start.
14:22 Woohoo!
14:23 And then keep burning.
14:24 Don't let your fire burn down so soon.
14:26 Yes, that is very true.
14:28 Very important.
14:29 And then after a period of time, take time to reflect.
14:32 You read through the comments and all, see how your audiences respond to your videos
14:39 and keep improving.
14:40 Wow, that is very important.
14:42 Yes.
14:43 Especially number two.
14:44 All are important.
14:45 The fire, right?
14:46 The fire is very important.
14:47 That's the one I'm struggling with always.
14:50 Yeah, it's definitely not an easy thing.
14:56 So, moving forward, what do you, yourself, aspire to become?
15:02 Wow, this is a huge one.
15:05 Like where do you see yourself?
15:07 I hope to, like YouTubers now, like you two, to inspire people.
15:16 Yeah, I think this is the ultimate goal I have.
15:19 Like, think about it, you have influence over a group of people who look up to you.
15:24 Just like how I look up to some of my role models.
15:28 I think it's very cool.
15:30 Yeah.
15:31 It is.
15:32 Yes, yes, yes.
15:33 Wow, thank you very much.
15:35 Thank you!
15:36 Yeah!
15:37 So, I hope you learn something from this session.
15:42 And please remember to also subscribe to both of us.
15:46 Thank you very much from In The Spotlight.
