BBC's Carol Kirkwood warns of snow and rain over next few days
Transcript
00:00 This morning we've got snow, we've got rain, it's going to turn windier as well.
00:03 We've got it all going on. So in summary what's happening is it's going to be
00:08 colder in the next few days than it has been, particularly so across England and
00:12 Wales. There is the risk of snow, we've had some snow falling across Scotland
00:16 as we've gone through the course of the night. In the north there's seven or
00:18 eight centimetres of lying snow. The heavy rain continuing to push away down
00:23 towards the English Channel. It's been doing that through the night and we have
00:26 seen some heavy bursts. So in the far south looking at a cloudy day, some spots
00:31 of rain but a lot of dry weather. Still some wintry showers in Scotland. This
00:35 morning we could see a few of those getting into Northern Ireland as well
00:38 and these are our temperatures. Only two in Lerwick to about nine as we move down
00:43 towards London. But note we've got tens and elevens in the southwest and this is
00:48 where we've got a weather front. And as we head on through the evening and
00:51 overnight tonight that weather front is going to come in. It's connected to an
00:54 area of low pressure. It's been named Storm Carlotta by the Spanish Met
00:58 Service. It's pushing northwards bringing in some heavy rain, windy around it and
01:04 as that weather front bumps into the cold air increasingly it will turn to
01:08 snow across parts of North Wales and the North Midlands by the end of the night.
01:13 It's also going to be a cold night, a few wintry flurries across the far north of
01:16 Scotland. Temperatures in sheltered areas could actually fall to minus eight, so
01:21 widespread frost and also the risk of ice. These temperatures you see represent
01:26 what you can expect in towns and cities. So as we head through the early part of
01:30 tomorrow this rain preceded by snow and its leading edge will continue to move
01:35 northwards. Now it's likely to be affecting Northern Wales, the North
01:40 Midlands, also Northern England and Northern Ireland and it's going to be
01:44 windy around it so the snow will be blowing and drifting. A lot of this will
01:48 be falling on higher ground but we will see some to lower levels so if you are
01:51 traveling do bear this in mind.
