00:10 about the country's future, former Law Minister Zaid Ibrahim said.
00:15 He said Malay leaders seem unable to explain to the people that the choice is between a
00:18 democracy governed by one set of general laws or an Afghanistan-Iranian-type theocracy.
00:24 In a posting on X, he added that if Malay politicians want to keep Malaysia as it is,
00:29 they should defend the court's decision, saying their reactions were emotional and
00:33 not grounded in reality.
00:35 Zaid also took a swipe at UMNO leader's reaction towards the ruling, emphasizing that
00:39 civil laws are the primary source of legislation governing the country.
00:44 The former Law Minister warned against dividing the country into two legal systems as the
00:48 ramifications will be more severe for the country as a whole.
00:52 The mother and daughter duo filed a petition challenging the constitutionality of 18 provisions
00:57 in Kelantan's Sharia Criminal Code 1 enactment 2019.
01:01 On Friday, the federal court struck down 16 of the 18 provisions on the grounds that they
01:05 are unconstitutional.
01:07 On Saturday, UMNO Deputy President Mohammad Hassan said the party will ask Jakim, the
01:12 religious affairs minister, and the law and institutional reform minister whether it was
01:17 necessary to amend the constitution to prevent such occurrences from happening again.
