Directed by Mimi Leder (The Peacemaker), this science-fiction disaster film explores the possibility of human extinction due to a comet colliding with Earth within a year. Jenny Lerner (Tea Leoni), an ambitious MSNBC reporter, discovers the news and calls a White House press conference. United States President Beck (Morgan Freeman) presents the government's solution: a team of astronauts will go to the comet and destroy it. The team leader aboard the starship Messiah is Spurgeon Tanner (Robert Duvall), the last man to walk on the moon. However, the mission fails, tearing off a part of the comet, which is now expected to land.
