00:00 I don't have to tell you, he was one of the greats of our profession,
00:03 because he wouldn't be doing this piece, were he not.
00:06 And everybody wouldn't be watching in a shocked state if they didn't feel the same way.
00:12 But the important thing is that he was not just a great broadcaster, he was a unique broadcaster.
00:20 What he did in assembling the big show, which he presented for decades,
00:29 will never be recreated. He was a one-off. He was one of those great one-offs,
00:37 like Kenny Everett or Terry Wogan. And when they're gone, they don't come back again.
00:43 We only hope that they have inspired vocations in younger people to be as unique, as daring,
00:53 as brave as he was.
00:56 I think a unique broadcaster is an even bigger loss, because nobody's irreplaceable, of course,
01:02 but Steve had a unique identity. And that is difficult to replace unless you try and copy,
01:08 and then it's not the same, and people say, "Oh, you're trying to copy so-and-so." But I guess
01:12 there are a lot of people around the country that were inspired by Steve and did something along his
01:18 lines. So the great part of his legacy is he will have inspired many, as we all hope we do.
01:25 So I think that's great. He will have inspired many up-and-coming broadcasters
01:29 who will mourn his loss on the radio.
