00:00 "It's a joyous occasion to take care of fur babies.
00:03 It's a huge responsibility to be a fur parent.
00:06 Their health is important, especially for cats and dogs.
00:10 It's possible for them to get rabies if they are not vaccinated."
00:13 This is Bernadette Reyes.
00:15 The last person to get vaccinated against rabies
00:20 was 51-year-old tricycle driver Arnel Marcos
00:23 who took care of his cat in October.
00:26 His wife told us that Marcos did not immediately go to the hospital
00:30 but he self-medicated the cat.
00:32 He was given a vaccine and antibiotics on November 1
00:35 but he was not able to follow it.
00:37 A few weeks later, he started to feel dizzy and scared of water,
00:41 some of the symptoms of rabies,
00:43 until the next day.
00:46 Teptan also took care of his cat.
00:50 "I miss him so much because I came from work.
00:52 He has a tendency to not like me at the time.
00:58 But I forced him to come here
01:00 and he bit me and I got sick."
01:03 So when you see cute cats on the street,
01:07 instead of holding them,
01:08 they just take pictures of them.
01:10 According to the Philippine Animal Welfare Society,
01:12 cats are also usually taken care of,
01:15 but compared to dogs,
01:17 cats are more independent.
01:20 "They're good pets because they're low maintenance
01:23 and they can be very gentle.
01:26 At the same time, they can also be at least independent."
01:31 Aside from dogs, many animals can also be carriers of rabies virus.
01:35 According to the POS,
01:37 5% of rabies cases in the country are due to cats.
01:41 "Not all dogs or cats have rabies.
01:44 Rabies is a disease.
01:45 So if you get bitten by a dog or a cat,
01:47 you need to take note of when you got bitten."
01:51 According to a veterinarian,
01:52 it's important to get vaccinated right away
01:54 if you get bitten by an animal.
01:55 "Regardless of whether the pet is vaccinated or not,
02:00 you have to go to the animal bite center.
02:03 It also depends on where you got bitten or how calm you are.
02:07 If it's the head region,
02:08 you should get vaccinated immediately
02:10 because it's close to the head,
02:11 close to the brain."
02:13 Up to 14 days,
02:14 you should observe a cat or dog that is bitten
02:17 and monitor if it shows symptoms.
02:20 "Normally, they become pure.
02:22 They get bitten or suddenly die."
02:24 It's also important to vaccinate the pets,
02:27 like in Batangas City,
02:28 where free anti-rabies vaccination is available
02:31 to LGUs in each barangay.
