Modern EVs can do a lot more than just cruise around quietly, especially when it comes to flagship models like the Nio ET9. Nio's Tesla Model S rival is touting its "Sky Ride" smart chassis system, shaking snow and ice off its bodywork without any human intervention, in a new video posted on Chinese social media Weibo.
Just a few months after Porsche released a CGI video showing a dancing Panamera, Nio has responded with more practical use of its active suspension system. A camouflaged prototype of the ET9 reveals itself from the snow using independently controlled shock absorbers, performing a similar trick to dogs and other four-legged animals.
Nio's smart chassis system is called Sky Ride and includes four custom hydraulic pumps that control each wheel independently. In addition to shaking the bodywork, the advanced suspension can also keep it flat when driving over rough terrain. This is showcased in another video where the Nio ET9 takes on the role of a waiter carrying a pyramid of glasses while driving over speed bumps. Finally, the third video, titled "high-frequency vibration test", shows the EV's wheels bouncing off the ground without disturbing the tranquility of the interior.
The Nio ET9 premiered last December as a luxury flagship model that will rival the likes of the Mercedes EQS, BMW i7, Porsche Panamera, Tesla Model S and Lucid Air. The EV is powered by dual electric motors that produce a total of 697 hp (520 kW / 707 PS) and has a 120 kWh battery pack with ultra-fast charging capabilities. The model is equipped with advanced active suspension as well as rear steering system.
The price of the Nio ET9 in China starts at ¥800,000 ($111,140) and deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2025.
