'Martha's Rule' - giving patients and families the legal right to seek an urgent second opinion should they be worried about a condition getting worse, will be rolled out in hospitals in England from April. It follows the death of 13-year-old Martha Mills in 2021 who died after developing sepsis while she was in hospital. Martha's mother - who has been influential in campaigning for the law - says that the new legislation will give people "somewhere to turn" when they are concerned. Report by Covellm. 00:00 I feel horrifically guilty that I didn't know or understand how the system works.
00:09 I put a lot of faith and trust in the doctors that were looking after Martha.
00:16 Even when I thought they were wrong.
00:18 When I had friends or family members who went into hospital after Martha died,
00:26 I said to them, "If you ever feel like anything's going wrong, do what I didn't do and scream the
00:32 ward down." If they get admitted to hospital and they worry that something's going wrong at some
00:37 point and they don't feel that their voice is being listened to, they have somewhere to turn.
00:41 Because we didn't have that when we were there.
