00:00 (upbeat music)
00:02 - Welcome to Style Solutions.
00:09 My name's Marina Lisht,
00:10 I'm the Associate Editor of nationalworld.com.
00:13 And as always, I'm joined by Natalie Dixon,
00:16 Lifestyle Reporter.
00:17 Welcome, Natalie.
00:19 - Thank you.
00:20 - Now, as always, every week,
00:23 I'm very excited on Style Solutions.
00:25 It seems that I look forward to talking to Natalie.
00:29 We talk on a daily basis, just so you know.
00:31 But I look forward to talking to Natalie
00:33 on Style Solutions every week.
00:36 And particularly this week, I'm even more excited
00:39 because we're talking about spring/summer 2024 trends.
00:44 Now, it seems slightly ironic
00:47 that I'm talking about spring/summer 2024 trends
00:50 as I can look out my window
00:52 and it looks like anything but spring or summer.
00:56 It is a gray, rainy day where I am.
00:59 I don't know what it's like where you are, Natalie.
01:01 - Yeah, it's absolutely chucking it down with rain.
01:04 - So miserable.
01:05 So we need some spring/summer fashion inspiration
01:09 to enliven us on this miserable day.
01:12 So before I talk about specific spring/summer trends,
01:16 I have always been obsessed with trends for many, many years
01:19 and talking about fashion trends, beauty trends.
01:22 And I literally, with every season,
01:25 I would look at the trends and think,
01:26 what are they, what are they?
01:27 Sort of like slightly frenetting and think,
01:30 am I gonna have to chuck out, go into my wardrobe
01:33 and chuck out everything and start going
01:35 and throwing everything out?
01:37 And I didn't do that.
01:39 And I definitely would not advise doing that,
01:42 particularly now in the cost of living crisis.
01:44 The last thing you wanna be doing
01:46 is throwing out everything in the wardrobe
01:48 and sort of embracing fast fashion.
01:51 I don't advocate that for one minute.
01:53 I think it's important to, when it comes to trends,
01:57 perhaps, you know, choose one or two items.
02:01 But when it comes to trends,
02:03 all too often the trends come back.
02:05 So something that was fashionable,
02:07 let's say five, six, or even 10 years ago,
02:10 you might've put it to the back of your cupboard
02:13 and then you might've not worn it for years
02:15 and then suddenly you discover it.
02:17 Or maybe that's just me.
02:19 Natalie, what are your thoughts on that
02:21 before we move on to the specific spring/summer trend?
02:24 - I completely agree.
02:25 I think that, especially when you sort of,
02:28 in magazines and things,
02:30 you do see sort of like the newest trends,
02:32 like this old trend now, that's out.
02:35 You need to get onto this one.
02:36 You automatically do think like,
02:38 oh my God, I can't be seen dead wearing that now
02:40 because it's old fashioned.
02:42 It's not trendy anymore.
02:43 And you do think that, oh, okay,
02:45 so I'll have to buy something new.
02:47 But actually, trends,
02:49 they do kind of come around and back again.
02:51 And as we sort of go through the list,
02:53 there will probably be a few things
02:55 that you go, oh yeah,
02:56 I've still got that in the back of my wardrobe
02:58 that I didn't throw out for whatever reason.
03:01 And you can get it back out.
03:02 And now all of a sudden you're back on trend.
03:05 - No, I totally agree.
03:08 So let's move on to sort of specific trends
03:11 for spring/summer.
03:13 And as I just mentioned previously,
03:15 some trends come back around
03:17 and some trends never leave.
03:19 So the trend I'm talking about is,
03:21 it's called sort of like,
03:22 I'd say maybe coming up with everything
03:25 sort of smelling of roses.
03:27 But if that's sort of,
03:29 what am I talking about?
03:30 I'd say sort of more florals.
03:33 And for someone like me,
03:35 it's amazing.
03:37 Wow, florals are on trend.
03:39 Fabulous, because I love,
03:41 Natalie will testify to this.
03:43 I love florals.
03:45 Whether they're on trend or not,
03:47 I will be wearing them.
03:49 So it's particularly exciting for me
03:51 because I love florals.
03:52 But I think if that's a trend
03:54 that doesn't appeal to you,
03:56 don't think, "Oh my God,
03:57 I've got to embrace florals."
03:59 So talking about florals,
04:03 I don't know,
04:04 I hope all of you have watched
04:05 the iconic film, "The Devil Wears Prada"
04:08 with the character Miranda Priestly,
04:10 because I have to.
04:11 I can't resist quoting her when she said,
04:15 "Florals for spring, groundbreaking."
04:18 Of course she was being, you know, ironic.
04:21 And the fact,
04:22 florals for spring are anything
04:23 but groundbreaking,
04:25 but I love them.
04:26 They're sort of everywhere on the catwalk.
04:29 Alexander McQueen,
04:31 Sarah Burton was showing them
04:32 in her last show for Alexander McQueen.
04:34 And they have been around in my wardrobe
04:37 for quite a while.
04:38 And celebrities have been embracing them,
04:41 I think, for many years.
04:43 And I was thinking actually,
04:44 of the beautiful pink sort of Valentino
04:47 floral dress that's in "Diaware."
04:49 And I think that was last year.
04:51 So, Natalie, I can see that you
04:53 are embracing florals today.
04:56 So what are your thoughts
04:57 on everything sort of floral,
04:59 roses, and the trend itself?
05:02 - So I think when it comes to florals,
05:06 I think that, yeah,
05:08 it's not groundbreaking for spring, summer,
05:10 but at the end of the day,
05:11 it comes back in fashion every year
05:14 because it just makes everybody happy.
05:16 It's pretty, it's girly, it's lovely.
05:19 Having said that,
05:20 I am not a fan of this trend at all.
05:24 I am embracing the sort of florals today.
05:26 I've got a bit of red flowers on me,
05:29 but I am very much a kind of plain, simple,
05:34 I don't really do a lot of print.
05:36 So this is completely out my comfort zone.
05:38 I think it's good that, you know,
05:40 we can wear them,
05:42 but I probably would be getting changed
05:44 'cause I don't feel comfortable in this.
05:46 It's not me.
05:48 I think the only,
05:49 I bought it thinking it was, you know,
05:52 oh, it's gonna be nice
05:53 'cause it's gonna be one of those things
05:55 I get out every year.
05:56 And the only thing that I do tend to do
05:59 is I'll throw a black leather jacket over it.
06:01 So it just gives it a little bit of edge,
06:03 which then it feels like it's me again.
06:05 I think as well with these sort of flowers,
06:10 you mentioned obviously Zendaya,
06:13 but what I also noticed was Bad Bunny randomly.
06:19 He was wearing for the Met Gala last year,
06:23 a really sort of like rose encrusted white outfit.
06:27 So the boys can, you know, wear florals as well.
06:30 - I completely agree.
06:33 I love florals and men.
06:34 I think they look fabulous.
06:36 So yes, and Natalie, you do look lovely,
06:38 but if you don't feel comfortable,
06:40 that's what we always say,
06:41 then it's not worth wearing it.
06:44 But I do think that's-
06:45 - It makes me happy something
06:46 that you do feel comfortable with.
06:48 - Yes.
06:49 So moving on to another trend,
06:52 and correct me if I'm wrong, Natalie,
06:54 I think it's the Pantone color of the year, Peach Fuzz.
06:59 So I would say that I'm not gonna be embracing Peach Fuzz
07:04 'cause I think it's a difficult color for me to wear.
07:07 I don't think I've actually got one single,
07:11 but actually you could, no, it looks more pink actually,
07:14 but in certain lights it looks peach,
07:16 but I don't own, I don't think one single item
07:19 of peach clothing in my wardrobe.
07:21 And I'm also thinking there's one Hollywood star
07:23 in particular who I think should not be adopting
07:28 any more sort of peach colored dresses.
07:31 And that is, dare I say it,
07:34 I know that she did win a BAFTA
07:36 and she's an award-winning, beautiful actress,
07:39 but Emma Stone's dress was a big no-no.
07:43 It was embracing Peach Fuzz,
07:45 but it was a fashion disaster in my opinion.
07:49 So Natalie, your thoughts on Emma Stone's dress
07:51 and Peach Fuzz in general.
07:53 - Yeah, I think it's, Peach Fuzz is a difficult color
07:57 for a lot of people to carry off
07:59 because it's that kind of soft,
08:03 sort of orangey, sort of peachy tone.
08:06 But yeah, I think that I'm the same.
08:09 I don't think I have anything along that sort of color
08:12 in my wardrobe, and I don't think I'll be buying
08:15 anything this year.
08:17 But when it comes to Emma Stone, I think it,
08:21 the dress was all just a bit too much.
08:24 I think, I'm gonna sound like a broken record,
08:27 but if it was in that color
08:28 and it was a really simple one-shoulder,
08:31 column dress that was just figure-hugging,
08:35 I think it would have made a massive difference.
08:38 But I think, speaking of the red carpet,
08:40 I do think that it is a color
08:41 that people are starting to wear a little bit more
08:44 and just sort of testing the waters with it.
08:47 So it's, yeah, it's, again,
08:49 it's not something I'll be jumping on.
08:51 - No.
08:52 So from one extreme to the other,
08:53 so from Peach Fuzz to the cowgirl aesthetic,
08:58 OMG, and Queen Bey, none other than Beyoncé.
09:03 So Natalie, I'm just gonna hand over to you
09:06 to talk about cowgirl aesthetic,
09:09 'cause I feel that you are the queen
09:11 talking about cowgirl.
09:14 (Natalie laughs)
09:15 - Yeah, I'd probably say that this cowboy boots
09:20 and cowboy hats,
09:23 they're definitely gonna be something
09:26 that everyone's kind of got in the back of the wardrobe.
09:30 Very well hidden. - I don't, Natalie.
09:32 I've histened to that.
09:34 - I don't.
09:35 But I think, I do speak to a lot of people,
09:38 a lot of my girlfriends are like,
09:39 "I'm so happy this night.
09:40 I can get my cowboy boots back out."
09:43 Yeah, I think it's not, I'm not a fan of it.
09:47 I know that one of the pussycat dolls
09:51 was speaking on the radio the other day,
09:52 and she was really excited about it,
09:54 the fact that Beyoncé's brought this trend back,
09:56 and she was about to go and put on the chaps.
10:00 I think if you love it, embrace it and go for it.
10:04 But yeah, so far we're not doing very well.
10:07 We're not getting on any of these trends.
10:10 - Florals, I've always been on that trend.
10:13 - It's just me then.
10:15 - The last two trends I'm gonna combine quickly in one.
10:19 So, and I think I'm gonna get on,
10:23 definitely on one of these trends is chokers and metallics.
10:26 So chokers, I think are a great,
10:29 again, talking about an accessory,
10:32 because you could potentially be wearing sort of,
10:36 maybe sort of quite a plain outfit,
10:38 and you could add a choker,
10:40 and it can completely finish off the outfit beautifully.
10:43 So I think that's quite,
10:44 and you can go for all different sort of,
10:46 maybe a pastel choker for spring.
10:49 And then I'm just gonna move on quickly,
10:51 and then bring you in, Natalie, is to talk about metallics.
10:53 So I think of metallics as normally an autumn/winter trend.
10:57 So it'll be interesting to see
10:59 how that translates into spring.
11:01 The way I would see it working with metallics
11:04 is potentially using some more sort of neutral shades,
11:08 maybe some creams with that, the cream and the gold.
11:11 So Natalie, your thoughts before we finish quickly
11:14 on chokers and metallics for spring/summer.
11:17 - Chokers is 100% something I am getting onto.
11:22 I think I probably do have a few still
11:25 in the back of the drawer.
11:26 I loved it when it had kind of like,
11:28 it came back, sort of like 2017.
11:31 I loved it in the '90s.
11:33 I was probably just a little bit too young,
11:35 but yeah, I loved it.
11:37 And I think it's just, it's nice that, like you say,
11:40 you can wear either just simple black ones,
11:43 a bit of suede, and then just sort of like,
11:46 really jazz it up with some Diamante ones.
11:49 Moving quickly onto metallics.
11:52 Yeah, I think, when I think of like metallics,
11:55 I automatically think of like silver,
11:58 but I'd probably pair that with like a white
12:00 to really sort of bake it pop.
12:02 I think you probably do have to spend
12:05 a little bit more money.
12:07 Quality over quantity is definitely better
12:10 when it comes to metallics,
12:11 because I think sometimes, especially silver,
12:14 can just look a little bit tacky.
12:17 So just be careful with materials.
12:20 - Well, thank you, Natalie,
12:23 for joining us ever on Style Solutions,
12:25 and we look forward to talking about
12:27 a different subject next week.
12:29 I can't wait to talk about it.
12:30 Thank you.
12:32 - Thank you.
12:33 (upbeat music)
12:35 (upbeat music)
