00:00:17 Good morning everyone and welcome to Kitchener, Waterloo, the novice national championships.
00:00:22 I'm your host Ted Barton along with Joni McPhail. Now Joni, we saw a lot of really talented skaters in all four disciplines yesterday.
00:00:29 Yes, there was a lot of skating all around yesterday. So we saw all the short programs and the pattern dances.
00:00:35 And why don't we recap some of the skating?
00:00:38 That's a good idea, Joni. Get going.
00:00:41 Let's start with the dance. So interesting challenge. The placements were a little bit all over with the two pattern dances.
00:00:48 But here it was the top skaters for the top skaters, which is going to make for a good free dance.
00:00:55 Laurence Briere and Julian Levesque are in first. It's tight behind them with I think only four points separating or two points separating the next teams.
00:01:04 I'd like to just talk about my highlight of the event. I really enjoyed Tasha Leigh and Miki Becker-Pas from BC.
00:01:11 You know, Megan and Erin's teams are always so polished in all the little details, but I really enjoyed both their waltz and their passo.
00:01:20 Yeah, they're a really good team. And, you know, they were novice champions last year or pre-novice champions last year.
00:01:25 Pardon me. First year in novice and up at the top group.
00:01:28 But there's a lot of really good teams there and and it's going to be interesting as we talked about yesterday.
00:01:33 Really, anything can happen. You know, one mistake in the twizzles or a lift or whatever. Things can shift around very easily.
00:01:38 Much like a free program. Like there's no room for errors in these. So it's going to be exciting to watch the free dance.
00:01:44 And I have to say that the judging has been fantastic, I think, really, in all events we've been through Canada.
00:01:49 But here, you know, they really take a look at the details. I think the judges have done a great job.
00:01:55 Absolutely. Kudos to the judges for doing your job and doing it the way you should do it.
00:02:00 OK, up next.
00:02:01 OK, the women. So we talked about the contenders Sandrine Blais, Ksenia Khrushchevich and Leah Cho.
00:02:09 And did not disappoint. Although it's interesting because Ksenia came out early, had a really good skate.
00:02:15 Sandrine came out, also had a very good skate triple triple combination.
00:02:19 And even though Ksenia outscored her in both technical and components, there is bonus points in this category for triples.
00:02:26 And Sandrine got more bonus points. But they're like less than like so close.
00:02:32 Yeah, it's so incredibly close. And all three of those skaters we talked about before would be do very well in the Junior Grand Prix.
00:02:38 They've got maybe a year or so to go before they get out there or some maybe next season. I don't know.
00:02:43 Yes. But let's also just talk, take a moment and talk about Leah Cho.
00:02:48 Oh, no, no, no. We talked about Ksenia Sandrine, but now Leah comes out and not only does she just go out and skate.
00:02:57 When she skates, there's this pure joy that and off the ice, just just her love for skating.
00:03:04 It's full attack. Absolutely. Full speed, full attack.
00:03:07 And you rarely see that in the pre-novice and novice categories. And it's there with Leah.
00:03:12 No question. And the smile from ear to ear does not stop.
00:03:15 She just loves to skate. So just an absolute joy to watch.
00:03:19 Like I just I'm anxious to see her free program today and see what she puts down.
00:03:23 And I think I was saying yesterday her she would have been in contention in the junior program with one less element.
00:03:30 So it's quite remarkable. I'd also like to mention Natalie Yonamori from Alberta.
00:03:36 So this is a skater who looks like a prima ballerina on the ice and her attention to detail from her head, her back, her neck, her fingertips, her toes.
00:03:47 She's done years and years of ballet training. I believe she actually could be a prima ballerina.
00:03:52 But just what a difference serious and attention to ballet training and body awareness makes.
00:03:59 She is just lovely on the ice. Well, we know the jumps and spins are important, of course, for the points.
00:04:04 And we can clearly see when there's a mistake. But when you're talking about overall quality of skating and quality of positions, this young woman really has it.
00:04:12 And, you know, she stands out. She really does. So kudos to to Natalie.
00:04:17 Now, there's an eight point spread from Leah to the rest of the field, but then only two points for the kind of the contenders behind that.
00:04:25 So like we say all year, you've got to go out and skate clean. Can't hold anything back. It's the championship.
00:04:30 Yeah, there's some really good skaters in the novice women's category. We hope you enjoy that event.
00:04:34 OK, on to Paris. That was awesome. Paris. Awesome. Very good.
00:04:40 And it's close, but also watching the practice this morning. I'm really excited for the free programs.
00:04:47 Yeah, what's so exciting is that Canada's done very well in junior and in senior pairs.
00:04:51 But we have quite a stock of young talent pairs in both pre novice and novice events.
00:04:56 And it was so good to see the strength of the individual pair skills, because you can be a good single skater, but you need those pair skills.
00:05:04 And generally it takes junior and senior to get to them. And we're starting to see that really solidify in the novice category.
00:05:10 And when you say young, you aren't kidding. Because Remy, Remy Muramoto and Keith Lau, she's only 10 years old.
00:05:15 Like one of the one of the youngest competitors in the event. So very young, but impressive.
00:05:20 And they're right behind them, Sioul back and Gavin Mahoney.
00:05:23 But watching practice this morning, it's going to be an exciting Paris championship.
00:05:27 The day finished yesterday with the Men's Short Program.
00:05:29 Yes, it did. And a skater that I tagged in Oakville Challenge was Kento Nakashima.
00:05:38 Incredible.
00:05:40 Incredible in his performance, his musicality and nuances and skating skills.
00:05:46 We talked about that in the women as well. But the difference here is the detail, the transitions from element to element are so detailed.
00:05:54 And so many of them and the skating quality, the edges, the depth of edges.
00:05:58 It's really remarkable, let alone the jumping and spinning skills.
00:06:01 Yeah. So I'm so he's in first place. So I'm hoping he puts down the free skate program.
00:06:06 We saw a challenge or I can put one down. But right behind him, Ryo Chin.
00:06:12 Taren Lee from... Didn't he win Pre-Novice last year? Ryo?
00:06:16 Ryo, he won Challenge as well. Yeah.
00:06:18 Yeah. So Travis Trang, Taren Lee and Parker Heiderich are all right behind.
00:06:25 And in this men's category, again, it's going to take a strong free skate program to get on the podium.
00:06:31 And I'm looking forward to it.
00:06:33 I have to say, it's really encouraging to see the talent and the skill that we have in the novice categories coming up.
00:06:38 And surely there's got there's a lot of room for improvement on technical elements that will come in time.
00:06:44 But the basic skating skills, the programs, connection with the music, it's really wonderful.
00:06:48 And it's it's promising. But we'll see. You know, it's a long career. Lots can happen.
00:06:52 All right. However, I do have a smile award and that goes to James Moskowitz because he smiles when he skates.
00:06:59 When he finishes, he just beams again a little bit like Leo Cho.
00:07:02 Just his love for skating. So the smile award for me goes to James Moskowitz.
00:07:06 This is a new award because I haven't heard that all year.
00:07:08 No, because I make up things as we go along.
00:07:12 No, really? OK.
00:07:14 Yeah. So Waterloo fun facts.
00:07:16 Because I have more. OK.
00:07:18 So Walter Zeller was born in Waterloo.
00:07:21 Is Zeller's? Zeller's.
00:07:23 Oh, my gosh. And an economic downturn in the 1930s.
00:07:26 He he created this concept of a department store now and that started the Zeller's department store.
00:07:33 Since that time, Zeller's has come and gone and is getting resurrected again by the base.
00:07:38 So, yeah, Walter Zeller from Waterloo.
00:07:41 There you go. There's one. And you have another one.
00:07:44 This was the one you've been waiting for. Yes, finally.
00:07:47 The electronic device that revolutionized communications.
00:07:51 And what was it called? Blackberry.
00:07:54 Blackberry. There's a movie about it. It's a great movie about it if you don't know about it.
00:07:58 So and what year? Do you know what year? No. 1984.
00:08:01 The 80s were big in Waterloo. A lot of stuff happened in the 80s in Waterloo.
00:08:05 So, yes, the Blackberry was invented in Waterloo.
00:08:07 OK. What's up next? Weather?
00:08:09 Well, first of all, we're going to thank our sponsors. Yes.
00:08:12 Canada Flowers. They do look lovely. They're beautiful.
00:08:16 Yeah, really, really nice. Like the weather outside.
00:08:19 Chicken Farmers of Canada and Corporate Traveler.
00:08:22 Yeah, perfect. Thank you for joining us.
00:08:24 OK, now the weather. OK, where are we going today?
00:08:27 We're going to Taipei. Taipei.
00:08:29 And the reason is? Because Junior Worlds will be happening there next week.
00:08:33 Our Canadian team leaves today. In fact, from Vancouver, a number of them,
00:08:37 they'll be traveling all the way to Taipei for next week, the Junior World Championships.
00:08:40 Actually, I'll be covering that for the ISU. So, you know, tune in in the middle of the night.
00:08:45 OK. And speaking of Taipei, the weather will be 18 degrees there this weekend.
00:08:49 So it's going to be nice. I think it's humid there, though.
00:08:52 That is. Kelowna. And we're doing Kelowna because it's our friend Steve Muff's birthday.
00:08:58 Yes. Happy birthday, Steve. Happy birthday, Steve.
00:09:00 And the weather in Kelowna is 10 degrees. Too bad you're not there, but it's warming up.
00:09:06 Montreal. Because of Worlds.
00:09:08 In one month, we'll be in Montreal for the World Championships.
00:09:11 Now, it's 5 degrees today. It's going down to minus 8 tomorrow, but it's back up to plus 10 next week.
00:09:18 So a little too early to predict weather for the World Championships.
00:09:21 We want to have nice, clean streets in Montreal for the World Championships.
00:09:25 So everybody can go shopping and go to the restaurants and not have a slushie.
00:09:28 I'm going to have to post the weather before the event so people know how to dress.
00:09:31 And finally, the weather here is plus 4. It's supposed to go up to 10 today.
00:09:36 It's absolutely beautiful. Bright and sunny. Springy like the flowers.
00:09:40 And that's the weather for today.
00:09:42 It makes us all feel good as we drive in here past the fields.
00:09:45 It's nice, sunny weather. It's beautiful.
00:09:47 Day 2. Competition starts with the Novice Free Dance, followed by the Women's Free Program.
00:09:53 After that, there will be the Medal Ceremony.
00:09:55 Then, into the Pairs Free Program, and the day will finish with the Men's Free Program.
00:09:59 Lots of great talent. Lots of great skating coming up today.
00:10:02 And it all starts right now. Here we go.
